Otago Halls of Residence

I think it means Knox and Carrington both declined you and it's now sent to your last choice and it's up to them if they accept you or not. I think you'll still have a chance of getting into Salmond.

Mine is TRANSFER

Oh my god. I want to die. I'm probably on the waiting list. I'll go call them coz I'm freaking out.

Oh, and yes!! You have been offered a position!!!!

Hey, don't worry man :)

My dean called a meeting today to tell students that although you may be put on a waiting list, waiting lists do move - people will decline offers and it is possible that you will get into the hostel that you wanted to get into!

It is not the end of the world. ^_^

Hello! First post on MSO ever :D
I got into St Margs :) But yeah, I've heard a lot of people talk badly of it.. so I'm not tooo hyped up for it aye haha
Oh well. I'm sure it will be fine

Oh sorry!! I completely missed your post in my panic!

It says Category: SALMOND
then STATUS: TRANSFER

...........not a good sign and this means I also got rejected from Knox or Carrington (I'm not sure if I put Salmond or Carrington 1st)
UGH!!!!. I JUST WANT SOMEWHERE TO LIVE!!!!...I should've put Carrington first :(

/EDIT

Yeah that's what I thought too :( Oh my god, let's hope so.

Yerah, I guess they do move but eeeeep.....I don't like the uncertainty about whether or not I'll have somewhere to live next year. =S On a side note, yes I do need to chill hahha

Don't worry if you're on the waiting list. Many people (like me) apply to more than one university and end up declining their offer. (like me)

Yeah but the thing is they don't tell me if I'm on the waiting list or not so it's even more nerve-wracking!!! :(

:) Congratz medicinegirl!!!

Yes I agree. Congrats on the offers guys! You probably have a pretty good chance at getting into Salmond, crucible :)
I don't know since Salmond requiresd an additional form for Salmond only and I didn't fill that out since:
1. the accommodation office said I wouldn't need to if I got into my 1st choice (which I didn't)
2. they also said someone would phone me if they needed additional info.....which they haven't

I'm in the General wait list as well so if you don't get what you want, we'll both be in the same situation. You won't be alone in not getting the halls of residence you want.

Hey, I'm new here, but I've been reading this thread and I have a few questions :)

I found out today that I got into Unicol (was actually my first choice - I wanted a relaxed hall that was close to HSFY lectures), but now I'm wondering if it was a good choice for someone wanting to do HSFY. I've heard that they have phenomenally low numbers of people getting into either medicine or dentistry... I'm a bit worried now. Is it that the place isn't conducive to study, or is does it just reflect the low numbers of HSFY students going there to begin with?

I'm also hoping to make some friends there, and I'm wondering if I have decent chances of finding anyone there that I'll have much in common with (ie. fairly thoughtful and not into heavy drinking)

It's not the Hall of Residents that determines if you get into Med or Dent or not. If you want it bad enough you will get accepted into Med or Dent. I'm not sure if the environment e.g noise etc. would be well, bad. I doubt it hahah they'd priobably yell if it got too loud but congrats on getting in!!!! :) and I'm sure you'll make friends, especially through O-Week- and this is coming from someone who's REALLY shy hahahah

I actually don't care which Hall I get into now. I just want to be accepted into one.
Let's hope that the GWL moves, right? :)

Probably a combination of a lower proportion of HSFY students, and the students who are doing HSFY probably did not do as well in high school overall compared with the students applying to other halls.

If you have what it takes to get into med, you will get into med. If you don't, you won't. There really isn't too much luck involved in the whole process, and certainly a hall will not 'make you or break you'. A hall will not stand in your way of getting into med. Nor will it give you any significant advantage. There are always the various libraries you can go to if you are worried about a study environment.

My friend was offered a place at Cumberland. She seems pretty disappointed and isn't sure if she should go on the GWL.

What do you guys think she should do? And what would she expect from Cumberland?

(I told her that hostels don't affect her chance of getting into Med etc., and that there are many other places where she can study if she's worried about that.)

I wouldn't do reject the offer, if that was me. It'd be safer you know? But if she really WANTS to go on the GWL, then it's her choice just tell her it's soooo irsky!!!! D: And yeah, right it doesn't matter what Hall you get in. If you want Med, you will get in through your own hardwork like Skyglow said.

Have I got any buddies who are gonna join me at Knox?

Howdy,
I'm a current HSFY at UniCol, and I'm doing just fine (ETA: By 'just fine', I mean 'better than most of the St Mags/Carrington HSFYs'. I'm on a 90% average, if that means anything to the uninitiated, and I've got a friend here who's sitting on 96%. So it is very possible to do well here). Yes, UniCol is a somewhat more 'relaxed' hall than some of the others, but it's proximity to your 8am lectures (of which you'll have a few :p ) is a real plus.
As I think Skyglow said (I didn't read his entire post lol, I'm lazy), UniCol doesn't have that many HSFY's, and has even less in semester two (because they have a tendency to drop out, lol), which is one of the reasons why we appear to have such a crummy 'getting into med' rate.
Also, the main reason (in my opinion) that the 'better' colleges get more people into med, is because most of the serious HSFYs apply there, so they pick the 'good ones', who are the ones who were more likely to get in from the outset. Simply going to those colleges in no way increases your chances of med.
You will make plenty of friends at UniCol, and trust me, it isn't as 'heavy drinking' as it's made out to be (although I'll admit that earplugs may be needed on some Saturday nights  ).
All in all, if you've gotten into UniCol, then congrats, and don't bother ditching your place to sit on the general wait list.

Depends on your preference, really, although a factor to consider is that alcohol-free is for the whole year, and you are NOT going to be studying every minute of every day/night of every week. There is a balance, and you'll need to find that balance. For some, alcohol-free ensures productive studying can occur whenever they like (though people being on a sugar high is apparently a reported problem on alcohol-free floors), for others, it prevents appropriate relaxation (which is as important, if not more important, as studying) from taking place.

Remember that there isn't one right way to do it - everyone has their own preferences and what works for them (and what doesn't), so not only will you have a range of opinions on alcohol-free floors, how applicable they are to you also varies.
