Otago Halls of Residence

GWL.... must keep hopes up to get into a hall.... must annoy freshers next year...

Are alcohol-free floors better?
As cath said, you're not going to be studying 24/7 (I write hypocritically from the library in the middle of a Saturday). But if you don't drink, then I'd imagine an alcohol-free floor might be good. Anecdotally, the types who go on alcohol-free floors seem to either 1) have religious reasons to want to be away from alcohol, or 2) are those types who study 24/7 and still get average marks. (Disclaimer, because I know how that last part will be interpreted: Being on an alcohol free floor will in no way alter your marks, it's a personal choice, that's all).
[offtopic]Lolsid, you'll be fine, there'll be plenty of freshers to annoy :p [/offtopic]

Don't listen to frootloop,
HES AN ALCOHOLIC FROM UNICOL.

Okay, done trolling.

But @Wongtong ,

To answer your question,
There are a few non-alcoholic in Carrington.

From the top of my head its
Dawson,
Stuart
Blackie flats

The nicest rooms are not located in these flats however the flats in the alcohol free areas are still very nice in itself.

The thing to consider about alcohol free is that whether you wanna drink (obviously) and the noise control.

Like what cath and froot says, you ain't gonna be studying 24/7
But seriously, you ain't gonna be drinking 24/7 and you can just leave your room and to one of the drinking flats and drink with your mates during a saturday night or something.
My main concern will be just the noise for sleep and relaxation.
So I would always recommend alcohol free. (personally Im alcohol free) so I may be biased.
However the noise control around the alcohol floors are fine anyways, Carrington do have it under control and well regulated.
Hanging out with drunk people do have its +ves.
All in all, its all up to you.
Although a fair warning is sometimes your floor may reek of alcohol after a HUBS test.

How hard is it to get into a hall if you're on the GWL? I don't really like the one I got into so I'm thinking of declining the offer to be considered for another hall.

Where did you get into? I gather you'd get in somewhere off the GWL, but don't bank on it being the one you want....

It'll probably be quieter in flats and floors which are alcohol free on drinking nights, only difference really, and the type of people you probably gonna living next to in a non-alcoholic.

As a guideline, in 2011 the course approval ran on 18, 21, and 22 February, and most people arrived over the weekend of 19-20 February.

To add to this, different surnames were done on different days, so if your surname is early in the alphabet, you'll probably have to show up a day earlier. From memory, the 21st was A-M, the 22nd was N-Z, and the 18th was just anyone who rocked up.
They'll probably send out your course approval guff soon though, I imagine, so that'll give you a good indicator of when you need to be here.
[offtopic]Now you mention it, I have absolutely zero clue when I need to be back down here next year  meh, that can all be sorted out later[/offtopic]

Thanks everyone for your advice about alcohol-free floors. I'm still trying to decide at the moment but I'm sure that either way I will enjoy myself at Carrington!

Hi everyone, I got an offer for City College and not sure if I should accept it or not. I've heard a lot about St Margs, Knox, Carrington...etc but nothing about City college. Does anyone know what its like? Would there be other HSFY students there?

You hear quite a few people rag on City College for some reason, and I'm not sure why. I've got a friend who goes there, and it seems like one of the better colleges imo. It's small, warm, modern, good food.... I think people look down on it a bit because it's got polytech students there as well, but that's just academic snobbery.
I'd advise taking the offer, it's a pretty sweet place.
Oh, and there are more than enough HSFY students everywhere in Dunedin, trust me.

You guys were right! I am so relieved. I just got my offer at Salmond. God. I spent 3 days not sleeping properly with nightmares.

Hi i got an offer for Aquanis but i wanted to go to Knox or Sewlyn.
Congrats!! :) If you're thinking about declining Aquinas.....I wouldn't risk it. It's very risky.

Does anyone know if there's a shuttle/bus to Uni that Salmond has or do we have to leg it to Uni in Winter?

i applied for st margs, carrington and aquinas.. i got an offer from aquinas, but i dont kno if i should reject it.. does anyone kno what happens if you reject like do u get another offer?? but how is aquinas anyway is it good? i kno that it is far but i dont care about that..i like walking lol but other than that i dont kno much.

There are posts in older topics that talk about the various halls.

If you reject it (which is not advisable) you can choose to go on the General Waiting List, then you'll get picked up by whoever has spots, and I would imagine that in the vast majority of cases, this will not result in a better offer than Aquinas, which I understand is a fairly good place to live. Please approach this from the practical aspect of living there, as your choice college will not influence your HSFY results. This is not at all like "choosing a good school for your kids" - colleges do not have a teaching role, although they are known to run tutorials, which are just some students who didn't do too badly in the paper last year trying to calm you down. It's not like another college would offer you an academic advantage (seriously, that's not how colleges work) so if you don't mind walking (or being punctual and catching the college shuttle), then I don't think you'd have any reason to reject the offer.

Can anyone tell me their HONEST opinion on Salmond College. I've been offered a place there but........I've done a lot of reading and from what I've read it doesn't seem very good (I'm not saying that it won't get me into the degree I want just the College itself).
Please tell me it's nothing like it says here:
https://www.gpforums.co.nz/thread/381438/2/

Because if it is I am seriously considering turning down the offer and risking it all by going on the GWL since I know Carrington won't accept anyone who doesn't put them as 1st reference.

That GP forums thread didn't seem particularly negative to me...

Putting that aside, it's good you've realised that Salmond wouldn't reduce your chances of med compared to Carrington. I can understand why you'd be feeling skeptical about Salmond, and I'd be disappointed too if I got offered Salmond when I wanted Carrington. However, it's not all that bad - I know someone from my old school who wanted Carrington and got Salmond, and he's really enjoying it this year. I think it's unusual to not enjoy your hall, whichever hall that is. Heck, the current president of the medical students association is currently an RA at Salmond!

I suggest you accept the Salmond offer - you'll still have a blast there, you'll still get the same chance of med, and you really don't want to end up flatting (and there is a reasonable chance that's what you'll end up doing if you decline the offer).
