Otago Halls of Residence

I'm not sure any of our regulars are or have been at Salmond, so I don't know if we can provide you with an informed opinion... (And uninformed opinion is generally based on rumours and tend to be particularly negative about everything other than, say Carrington.)

I must say this is getting blown out of proportion (because it honestly doesn't matter as much as it's made to sound like), and I'll quote you the best piece of advice from that thread you linked to:
Accept it. At the end of the day you will have fun in any hall, including Salmond. Flatting gets old fast, you will have plenty other years to go flatting.
So go to a hall, meet people and have fun.

Ah okay! :) I guess I'll be the first then! Yeah, you're right. I'll accept the offer, since I am lucky enough to get a place, so yeah :) Gosh. I guess I'll have to leg it to Uni next year through the Winters! (I'm up in Auckland right now so I highly doubt I'll be very happy about the Winter in Otago hahah)

[offtopic]It'll be good for you ;)

Besides, Salmond and the uni buildings where you have class will all be very well heated, so you'll be a lot better off than the students going flatting.[/offtopic]

I know hahah EXERCISE :D

Gosh. I am really excited now =S but how would you go about getting to know everyone at O-Week next year? I'm kinda really quiet.

Most people are feeling the same way, everyone is a little anxious/shy, iirc initially most people just say hey-what are you studying-which floor you're at etc etc.

Talking to your floor/neighbours you'll likely be friends with them. Joining hall social sport teams...going out to town with people etc.

Its pretty fun meeting new people... and if you're lucky you can find a fellow mso, like i did-stalked fruitloop out good.

No, but I mean, I am REALLY quiet. lol...I think people mistake that for being snobby :(
But I'm leaning towards flatting now since the cost for a college is 12 730 D:

Hahahaha/ Nice one :D Maybe I'll just write down usernames for next year and do that- jokes hahahha but it'll be cool if I can run into some of you guys :D

Stable provision of warm, clean accommodation and food of reasonable quality without having to worry about it during health sci: priceless.

I would recommend avoiding the stress of flatting until after health sci.

Yes! You're right. My parents also said that this morning. I guess I'll be living at Salmond next year :)
=P Sorry about having weird panic attacks about next year on the forum. I have definitely decided to accept their application. :)

If you reject it (which is not advisable) you can choose to go on the General Waiting List, then you'll get picked up by whoever has spots, and I would imagine that in the vast majority of cases, this will not result in a better offer than Aquinas, which I understand is a fairly good place to live. Please approach this from the practical aspect of living there, as your choice college will not influence your HSFY results. This is not at all like "choosing a good school for your kids" - colleges do not have a teaching role, although they are known to run tutorials, which are just some students who didn't do too badly in the paper last year trying to calm you down. It's not like another college would offer you an academic advantage (seriously, that's not how colleges work) so if you don't mind walking (or being punctual and catching the college shuttle), then I don't think you'd have any reason to reject the offer.
thanks.. I've decided I am going to accept it as it is really risky if I don't.. But yea hopefully I will make friends down there next year..lol

You''l be fine, just go in with a open/happy attitude during o-week... chilling in the main common room during the day or sitting with randoms at breakfast and lunch helps aswell.

Lol my personaity is kinda crazy/quirky so you probably dont wanna meet me, ask fruitloop, he has to deal with me everyday (we both live in unicol).

Eeeeep. Okay hahaha. I'll try but I've done it before (every single year for high school LOL) and it didn't work that well, I mean, I make things AWKWARD. Like, I just don't know what to talk about to someone that I don't know.....won't they think I'm weird if I randomly sit with them LOL

Ahahaha no, honestly. I am insanely weird and loud if I know someone well- the problem is that I'm the opposite when I know no one. Ahaha so yeah. I wouldn't mind + and the fact that I'll be scared like hell on the first day of Uni D:
Can we have a meet-up or something. The more people I know, the calmer I'll feel lolll

Sorry for the double post!!! I can't delete it!! D:

EDIT: Fixed it for you :) - cathay808

Don't worry. I'm like that as well :-D Weird and loud but shy towards people i don't know.

Im keen for a meet up as well :-D

Hey, sorry to ring on on the conversation. I'm just as freaked about next year, and if I end up in Otago (which would be amazing) it's going to be a massive change from Sydney, eeeep. Do you know if there are many Australian students, not that I don't love you kiwis!! And yikes, have offers for halls already been made? I haven't even sent in my reference yet, hopefully the waiting list isn't too long.

Nahh. It's cool :) Don't worry there'll be a lot of people just moving down to Dunedin (:P I have to come down from Auckland) Haha. I wouldn't be sure since I'm still in year 13 but I'm pretty sure someone else here will know.
And yup. 1st round offers have been made (not too sure if they're still going). Send it in quick!!!! :)

I got into Carrington. No idea if its near Salmond.

Either way, we'll be mostly in the same lectures.

I'm moving down from Hamilton.

Don't be freaked out brandit. Everyone's nice and will make you feel welcome :-D. I'm sure there'll be a couple of Aussies

Ohhh awesome. That was my last option and I didn't want to risk getting rejected by them so I stuck with Salmond.
Sweet! :) I'll know a few of you guys then :D

Haha, most people are shy on the first day, so they'll be happy if you sit next to them if they'r alone.

Honestly, just smile or laugh it'll help with the awkwardness.

Inb4 MSO uni meetup and no one shows up haha.
