Otago Halls of Residence

if they get on the shuttle with me I will die (sorry for the melodrama) and wave goodbye to new friends.
This being checking into college, I suspect that's more common an occurrence than you make it sound like... In fact I'm willing to wager that if this does eventuate, it will be held against you exactly zero times.

It is??- that's a relief then hahahah

If its any consolation, my parents will probably do the same thing :-D
Yes! High-5!!!! :D

Yeah sorry, don't hold me to that, it's not like I've been to college... Though not for lack of trying... But that's a long, sad story...

Um....guys?? I'm kinda in a really bad situation now D:

Is there a specific date that Otago scholarship results are released? I, apparently, was awarded one to Auckland and it says that "it [Auckland Uni] reserves the right to seek repayment of tuition fees and other payments made under this scholarship from students who enrol at another institution without completing 2 semesters of study at the university of auckland".

:( Does this mean I have to pay them the scholarship money even though they haven't given it to me yet just because I applied for Otago. I mean, don't a lot of year 13s apply for everything and then see which Uni they get into??

:( I'm freaking out now.

First of all. CONGRATS on your scholarship! Did you get the really big Auckland one?

Don't worry. It says that you actually have to ENROL to the institution. So since you haven't enrolled yet, it doesn't really matter.

It's only when you choose to accept the scholarship but then enrol at Otago as well. That's the problem

Lol. no... i was in the same situation last year with that and just declined. and no they didn't make me pay them 50gs worth of money they hadn't even paid me.

Now, I should mention that if Auckland works anything like the Otago system, somewhere early January they will ask you to confirm that you are attending Auckland, and only then will you be processed for tuition fees, and only then will it be a problem to ditch Auckland before your first year is up... Essentially, that's just a thing to make sure people don't put scholarship money into a course and then run off to another university during the year.

Applying for Otago stuff doesn't count as having "enrolled" at Otago - a process that only gets anywhere once you confirm in January that you will definitely be attending Otago. I would presume that the same goes with Auckland - that your scholarship money won't go to tuition fees (and any cash payment to you won't be made) until you've confirmed attendance. Only then will there be clawing back of money if you jump ship to another uni during the year, and I don't have to say that it'd be silly to tell both universities that you're "definitely going to attend"...

Essentially, the clause exists to prevent "yes I will definitely attend Auckland, yes I've done course confirmation, now if you'll put $6.5k into my tuition fees, and give me that $10k cash payment... good... now I'm off to Otago, thanks bye, and don't forget to put the $6.5k tuition fee refund into my account," in that if you pull that on them, they reserve the right to get their money back, which would be reasonable.

In short, don't freak out, you haven't enrolled anywhere, and the scholarship is an offer which you can turn down. And no, people are actually reasonable and won't just take money off you.

Thank you!! :) Um..I don't think I did hahah I got the one where it's $2000 for 3 years. Oh okay then, that's a relief! :D
Only problem is I can't choose Unis now and I've paid Salmond the money to confirm my place.

Lol. no... i was in the same situation last year with that and just declined. and no they didn't make me pay them 50gs worth of money they hadn't even paid me.
Ouch! That must've been hard. My parents will so not be keen if I decline $6000 for 3 years vs. $20 000 a year at Otago :(.......and if I decline and don't make it into Dentistry 2nd year at Otago I'll probably go back to Auckland and that's $20000 down the drain and $6000 gone...lol

That's a reasonable request though. If I was Auckland Uni and someone did that I'd be pretty irritated/ violently angry (which is such an understatement). Do you know if an application for accommodation will impact on my application for a scholarship at Otago?- I mean, they might think my family's SUPER rich being able to pay for accommodation and all but that's not the case.

Sweet. Thanks for clearing things up guys :D I reallllllly appreciate it and it'd be the best if I could actually hang with you guys if I end up going to Otago :)

lol....going to go and be plagued by indecision now hahah

No, just no. They are not a coordinated response.

That is a reasonable request, hence my "don't freak out", and the "it doesn't apply to you" implied.

As far as I can see the accommodation and scholarship are processed by different parts of the university, and if anything, I fail to see how the scholarship people would even be aware of your accommodation status, because if anything, big organisations like a university have different departments to deal with different things and they simply don't communicate with each other. Furthermore, applying for a college does not imply that your parents are rich, there are plenty of people covering half of it with their student allowance or the living cost component of their student loan and paying the other half out of their own savings. Finally, unless it's a scholarship for students in financial difficulty, you won't be judged on your financial status, and even if you are, the wealth of your parents isn't exactly an indicator for your financial status - I believe it is normal in the western culture for parents not to financially support their children regardless of their own financial status. While the IRD likes to use parental income for assessing student allownace for students under 25, it is not a common thing to judge people by.

In short, as muse said, "no, just no."

Awesome :) And sorry for freaking out again on the forums- I tend to do that.

HeyI got into arana, but I was wondering if I should pick alcohol free zone? Is it actually really loud in alcohol zones? Or do people tend to go out and drink etc..How much different would it be with alcohol free/ alcohol allowed?Plus for the quite zones, are the rooms different or in different places?

hi guys! I got accepted into unicol. I heard it's pretty good although i wanted Arana instead
. I wrote a letter to the master and he told me that he tries to put all health science first year students on the same place (around 40%)
the place is called the Forth Street Mews, is this place the good part of the college? Also i chose alcohol free floor..does that mean i won't be put in the Forth Street Mews? Should i choose alcohol free or not.. . Anyone could please share their experience at unicol would be great

Is it generally hard to get into Carrington? I feel that Carrington has a good balance (plus it looks awesome!) of work and extra curricular events. In saying that, I am pretty sure other halls are too, but I find that Carrington mixed with my personality well when I went over. I only got to see Carrington though, and I was also wondering besides St Margs and Arana, which halls would generally be quiet. All I really care about in a hall is peace, quiet, nice gardens if they have any, and awesome tutorials.

Offers for residential colleges have already been sent out and you should have decided which residential college you wish to stay at by now, so it seems a bit late to choose which college is best.

And here's a quote from greenglacier about the number of applications St Margs and Carrington gets which should correlate to the "hardness" to get into them:
St. Margaret's and Carrington will not have 4 applications for each space! From what I've heard St. Margaret's tends to get 1.5-2 applications for each space and Carrington tends to get 2-2.5. If you put either as your first choice you'll probably get in, provided you get a good reference and can sell yourself as having success/involvement in areas other than academics (leadership, sports, cultural...). Don't put down Carrington, St. Margaret's and Selwyn as your 3 choices by the way, as they don't accept anyone putting them 2nd or 3rd (except for St. Margaret's in some cases).

Scholarship emails have been sent!!

:( I didn't get a Schol from Otago- lol.......this sooo doesn't help me pick universities D:

Were any of you guys successful?? :)
