Otago Halls of Residence

Hey all
Im still very much torn between Arana and Carrington...can anyone try to sway me either way? hahah :)
Welcome to MSO warfighter4life! Have you read through earlier posts in this thread? They may help.
Many say that Arana tends to have quite a good work-life balance, and Carrington is definitely one of the halls big for HSFYs.

Does anyone know if students are allocated rooms by course in Hayward like having HSFY students together on the same floor like in Cumberland. Does anyone know if they're planning on doing that for Te Rangi Hiroa? Also, there hasn't been much information available on the new college on the Otago website, anybody have information on when it's going to be updated or the fees announced? And does Hayward have a tennis court? I read that Cumberland does but found nothing about that on the Hayward site.

Hayward doesn't have a tennis court. They sometimes used Cumby's if I remember correctly.

Hey guys, so I know Aquinas is a bit of a trek away but what do you guys think of it as a 3rd choice and for HSFY? And just general thoughts? :)

how many people typically get put in each villa and how many floors are there? And are the villas single sex or a mixture of guys and girls? Thanks :)
The villas are all two storey? But your whole villa is regarded the same as a 'floor' at any other hall in that you do activities as a house (if your HT organises them). There's about 7 houses from memory and 5 traditional dorm style accommodations. In my house there were 17 and I think that's pretty standard - I'm not sure exactly how many were in each sorry. And they were all mixed sex but I would say you could request single sex, and if enough people did they could organise this. However, if you definitely want a single sex floor - Hayward has both girls' floors and boys' floors.

Hi (:
I emailed Ashley Day (the Warden of Te Rangi Hiroa) with inquiries regarding the fees, academic support and social events/activities. He replied very promptly with an email stating that the fees are still indefinite at this point in time, though he anticipates that it'll be around $358 a week - which is some $15 more that most other Colleges as all of Te Rangi Hiroa's rooms are en-suited. As for academics and activities; he tells me there will be "a full academic tutorial programme in the evenings with extra sessions around exam times" and a Committee will be elected within the first few weeks to organise the social programme, which will include inter-College sports, the annual ball, the ski trip, debating, in-house pool competition etc.

That being said, does anyone have any opinions of the college? I am currently based up in Auckland and am trying to finalise decisions for my three options, as well. At the moment, I am undecided between putting Hayward or Te Rangi Hiroa as a first choice and I'd love to hear some feedback from everyone on this lovely site (:

If Ashley is managing it, it's likely he's going to manage it in the style of Carrington. I know the RA's he's invited to be there for the first year are generally from Carrington as well, so it's likely that the atmosphere there will be quite similar...

I was thinking of Hayward and Carrington as my number 1 and 2 before I found out about the new College... Now I'm battling between:
1) Hayward/Te Rangi Hiroa
2) Te Rangi Hiroa/Hayward
3) Carrington

It helps a lot that I now know that the atmospheres of Carrington and TRH are likely to be similar, so thanks a lot :) In terms of facilities, as well as the atmosphere & people, between Carrington/TRH and Hayward, which would you personally recommend?

Cheers.

You probably won't get into Hayward in 2nd place, and you definitely won't get into Carrington as number 3.

Hi there, I went down to Otago last Friday and had a look around the residential colleges. I'm now considering the following
1. Arana
2. Hayward
3. Knox
I am not sure if I should put Hayward 2nd because I really like Hayward, but then again I am not sure if I should put Arana first because I have quite mediocre academic results.

Hayward is likely to fill up in first rounds, but you can still get in in the second rounds. I think Hayward is starting to inch up in becoming one of the first-round halls though. Do you have any extracurricular that could bump up your application? Like, being a sports rep, music competitions, leadership roles, community service etc?

Hi I don't know much about any of the halls. I want some suggestions on which halls to apply for. I play soccer and cricket and but just for social-not at rep level. Study quite a bit and don't party that much.

Do you mind partying/people partying?

If yes:
1. Carrington/St Margaret's
2. Aquinas
3. Salmond

If no:
1. Arana
2. Knox
3. Aquinas

Peer support leader, pipe band, concert band, choir group, drum major and student coach, tutor for children in need. I dont have an activity that i excel well in, I just do a lot. However I have been in a pipe band for 3 years and i plan to play for city of dunedin next year! :D
Should I change my mind and put hayward as my first instead? Knox second and maybe something else third?
