Hi guys, at SMC -kind of not that great, but it's alright. The rooms are waaaaaaay bigger at Hayward (like twice the size) and my room faces onto a brick wall, so no natural lighting, only prison fluorescent lights = depressing.

Anyway, I was just asking what textbooks you guys used last year and found really helpful and the others that you could do without. I heard that most times the lectures have good enough notes, i think.

I heard that the Uni course book for phyi 191 is a given to have. Also the HUBS191/192 (Physiology by thibodeau) is good to have. Is this correct? But what about the other four papers and their textbooks are they any good?

S1:
CELS191 : Campbell, N.A. & Reece, J.B Biology
CHEM191 : Blackman, A. et al Chemistry (with WileyPlus)

S2:
HEAL 192 : Webb, P. et al Essential Epidemiology
BIOC 192 :Campbell, M. & Farrell, S Biochemistry

thanks.:)

the great veinasian once said "Textbooks - over $500 for poorly lighting paper for the fireplace."

Thibideau and Patton was really useful.
Also get Essential Epi, that's like your bible in heal192.
The other 3 aren't absolutely essential.
You could just photocopy the chapters you need, which would cost $5-10 at the most, rather than spending over $100 for a whole book -most of which you aren't going to read.
Otherwise buy them second hand, which is always a good option.

If I could go back and redo HSFY, I wouldn't get the thibideau and patton one because everyone on my floor had a copy and they never used them, so I could just borrow it from anyone to quickly look up something. The HEAL one is absolutely essential, and PHSI is a given ya.

Haha yeah i went at 9 on monday... bad mistake although i managed to cut the lines with sneaky use of friends already in the line!
We dont have any internet yet at my hall so Ive had to come to the library to get online...
Im a bit tired from getting woken up at 4.30 by water baloons! Haha

Sewlyn right? Water baloons is nothing mate.. We were woken up by drums, the bagpipes, and tuba at 4.00. Made to go outside into the Quad, lie face-down on the cold wet concrete and made to crawl forwards to get bathed..

And omg... the Toga parade!! Was that crazy or what!?!?

Lol Knox is so sadistic. I was talking to one of the second years (William Cheyne) and he said he was definitely gonna make it hell for the first years at Knox.

English diagnostic test, 9.30 am -St David Lecture Theatre.

Lecture, easy.
Dictation, somewhat easy.
Reading comp, alright.
Essay, **ck.

Got halfway through the essay and then the guy said stop. Hopefully my essay contained some compelling stuff. I did the texting one btw. OMG, I don't even know why I care so much, I feel like this is study it right after one of my exams.:)

PS.
Can I join your study group koochkooch? I'm in St Margs btw.

It's so much fun though.. It's great once you've gone through with it.. Good experience in a way. Is his nickname 'chainsaw'?

Yeah Eng test was alright. I hope my handwriting is legible for the dictation part, especially the 3rd sentence. My essay was kind of crap, repeated stuff way too much..

Dunno about his nickname, would make sense though cause his last name is cheyne. He's a really cool guy anyway.

Yea he is.. It's grandparents night tonight... We've been told to go to their rooms with a bucket. How daunting is that

im finding stmargs pretty cool, made a couple of new friends and the ross wing is awesome.

just a question, where is the best place to get the serology test? (blood test for immunities/antiobodies) i know it's really early, but just trying to get it out of the way.

Good that you're getting it done early. Saves a hell of a lot of stress later in the year.
1. Call up student health, but maybe they don't do it this early.
2. If that fails: Call up your GP back home and get them to fax you the tests you need done then get Jenny/an RA/other authority at reception to get it from the computer room for you. Then take it and go to the lab on Hanover st(?), um it's near New World. Don't go to the lab on George St cause they'll just kick you out and tell you to go to the other. Then you'll get a call from your clinic at home about your results because they send it back to your GP. But then there's the issue of picking it up.... Maybe get your mum to get your GP to sign it and grab all the test results then post it to you.

Sounds complicated but that's what I did! If you do it this way they don't charge you either.

That sounds interesting lol. Make sure you get stuck into your next week though :) I personally would be annoyed at all the formal dinners and stuff you'd have to worry about. I'd rather just be left alone to study or hang out with good friends whom I can really relate to/share stuff with, no matter how antisocial that sounds.

I did it through student health and they handled all my documents which was very nice. If I remember right student health doesn't start doing it until about 2 months before admissions, and I did it around then when everyone else was doing it and it was fine.

I don't get why Otago makes med-hopefuls do their blood tests before they even get in, surely its a waste of money and lab resources for most people. I doubt enough people are disqualified from med because of their blood test results to justify doing it beforehand.

Skyglow just told me you can't even get disqualified? Then what is the point of doing it before?

Actually some people in med still hadn't gotten their blood test forms back at the start of the year. I don't know if they were grads or what.

Koochkooch can't post for some reason, but he can private message so ya. Just give him a private message if you want to join the study group thing (sounds like it'll be a decent size) and he can private message back.

I believe you only really need to have your vaccinations (and seroconversion) before you engage in clinical exposure. Technically before your TI year, but realistically and ethically for Otago before 4th year. Like the public health nurse (Jenny Looser?) said, you wouldn't want to be the one who gave an immunocompromised child varicella!

Incidentally I never got chicken pox, so I'll have to get the vaccinations :(. So much money!
