Long time stalker, first time poster. Hubs 88, Cells 88, Phsi 86, Chem 82.

Still in with a chance but looking for a good Umat and Maori

hey what up everyone
i got an average of about 90 (did shit in a couple of subjects and ok in the others)- should i take an 8th paper or not? i mean i know it can potentially boast my average up but i want to focus on the 3 papers more in the next semester
and with this average what umat percentile should i be getting if i want to get into dent or med? help would be appreciated

Hey jim, It is honestly up to you! If some of your marks are "shit" (please define what sort of marks this corresponds to - u don't need to reveal your mark, just what is the minimum mark that you would be happy with) then it might be worthwhile taking an 8th paper! From what I hear from frootloop, MAOR102 is pretty easy, and doesn't take much time out of study for the other 3 cores!

1) i got 83 88 93 95 yeah the 83 one is the one i am worried about cause the others are above 85- so should i take an 8th page?
2) i want to know what BSNS104 is like? is there a lot of maths involved (i don't mine)
3) what you struggle very badly if you didn't study economics before in high school?
4) is there a lot of stuff to memorise in BSNS104?
5) what marks and percentages do people generally get in BSNS104?
6) do you think BSNS104 would take most of the time away from the 3 core subjects in semester 2?
thanks everyone- its bloody driving me crazy- so damn important (afterall its an extra paper)
btw cheers nimbus for the advice before

Since the topic of 8th papers seems to be on people's minds, I'm going to throw in my subjective opinion:
MAOR102 is an easy (2 lectures a week, practically zero content, no labs) A+, and is relevant to what you'll be doing next year. In my opinion, you're nuts not to take it.
If you want to take BSNS, then by all means, but I maintain that MAOR is probably a lot less work, and just as interesting.

One option that you guys might not have thought of is that you can try out an 8th paper - i.e. enrol in it, go to the first 1-2 weeks of class, then if it isn't working, withdraw. If you withdraw in time you get the fees refunded and it stays off your record.

I didn't really find MAOR easy as such. The assignments take up quite a bit of time. I think the 'easyness' of the 8th paper depends on how efficient your study is because if you're like me and not efficient, then you will fall behind in your other papers. I've heard that BSNS is not a cruisy paper anymore (unless perhaps you are good at economics). You actually have to work for the grades. Sure there are less contact hours, but you have to put in the effort. Like Matt Bevin says, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Anyway like GG said, you can try it out and then withdraw if you find that it's too much. That's what I did. So then you won't regret not having done an 8th paper or half way through the semester think, "Oh I should've done an 8th paper it looks so easy".

The other thing to factor in, is that often people doing just 3 papers in semester 2 slack off really badly. In part this is due to most people getting lazier in semester 2 anyway, but in part it's because having an 8th paper actually motivates you to do a lot more work (I reckon).

no worries :) as for the other questions, one of the mod's will probably be in a better position to answer those questions than me! (I am only a fellow hsfy after all)

BSNS - I think greenglacier or @Voldermort may be able to answer your questions!

Although, by looking at the information on the website on the stuff and everything, it has apparently undergone massive changes :/

Um, don't have time to write a particularly long reply, but I've posted about BSNS a fair bit before, if you want to have a search. I believe there's actually a whole "8th paper" thread somewhere, for starters...

In short, I found BSNS very manageable, and more worthwhile than I would've found Maori. Lots of people do Maori because it's easy, then rationalise it by saying "and it is relevant to med". Tbh, I don't think you gain anything in terms of med from doing MAOR - they teach you plenty of Maori culture throughout the med degree anyway. BSNS on the other hand, you won't have another chance to learn in a structured environment, and it actually is quite helpful/relevant for public health and bioethics (which makes up a decent chunk of med).

However, I did do BSNS 3 years ago, and it's changed a bit since (in particular, the awesome lecturer I had has now left).

thanks gg- do you know what the paper involves- lots of maths or lots of writing and what is the structure of the tests, exams etc
do you need prior knowledge of economics in high schools
so worry because i don't have any information about what the paper is like

hi, anyone have any info about Pacific Societies paper PACI101? I am trying to decide between this one and MAOR102, any idea about requirements and assignments ...etc

Someone take Greek Mythology and tell me how it goes!
My friend has done a minor in Classical studies - did most of the greek myth papers. Says he absolutely LOVED it, but that as the course progresses, the papers begin to focus on specific myths/legends and then it just becomes tedious. He withdrew from Political Criticism which was a 300 level classics paper. So the Greek myth paper would be great for interest, but not sure about whether its a reliable choice for getting a high grade

hey guys- does anyone know how many people got an average of over 90 (i got about 88) in their 4 semester 1 papers? is there a lot?
just wondering :/
