Hello
Can anyone tell me what the semester 2 papers are like- in terms of difficulty, how manageable it is. whether taking an eighth paper is going to influence the 3 core papers and finally what to be careful with (watch out) for each paper. Thanks heaps

Hi jim

You've asked similar questions to this several times now. How thoroughly have you read the forum? This forum has a huge amount of knowledge if you seek it out, and the archives contain the experiences of the previous 3 HSFY cohorts. Given that you're on mid-year break now I'm guessing you have a bit of time, so why don't you have a decent read through? I've even written a guide to help people get started: https://www.medstudentsonline.com.a...tudents-potential-students-please-read-23929/

The mammoth archive thread is here: https://www.medstudentsonline.com.au/f115/otago-hsfy-chat-archive-8278/

There's also a forum search function at the top right of the page.

If you have any specific questions, I'm happy to help (I remember what it was like in HSFY!). However, I'm also rather busy with class, so rather not inclined to spend heaps of my free time answering questions like "please sum up all your advice for second semester", particularly when the forum is full of such advice and experiences. The same applies to all of our regular med student members.

Thanks.

sorry about the language. I was very emotional at that time :(. But I am currently channelling my frustrations into good UMAT prep

Has anyone heard back from ACER about the time of UMAT test? Because I haven't heard anything back from them, and I'm starting to get worried that maybe my application didn't get through..... Thanks

Neither, last year I got the email 2 weeks before the exam so I think we're good at the moment.

Currently torn between MAOR and BSNS.

I've had a good read of everything that's been said on the forums. Was originally heading towards picking MAOR but the essays are swaying me towards BSNS.

Suppose I'll just turn up to the lectures in the week to test the waters without adding a paper yet.

Did you get a confirmation email from ACER when you registered for UMAT this year? if so, you'll get the email with the venue and time about 1.5 weeks before the test date

Hmm yeah really not sure which 8th paper to choose. By the way, just making sure, without having to go to the course approval we are allowed to enter an 8th paper by the 13th of July, right?

Yep. Here's a conversation that I had with the helpdesk earlier today.

You can come to the University Information Centre in the ISB Building, collect a Change of Course form and get the appropriate signatures. You have until July 13 to add a second semester paper. As you won't have changed your course in time for the timetable run you will need to speak to the department that runs the paper about which lecture/tutorial/lab streams you will be assigned to.

They're open Monday to Friday from 8.30am-5pm

Edit: Also, I believe that the lecture times are as follows for MAOR and BSNS:
BSNS104: 3-4, 4-5 -- EXC MON + WED
MAOR102: 12-1, 4-5 -- EXC MON, WED, FRI

EXC = excluding (so not on those days)

For our immunity status tests, does the health professional have to be our GP or can it just be any health professional?

Oh, and are there any tutorials/extra stuff for MAOR102?

I went to my GP who referred me to southern communities lab. I think you need to see the GP first....not entirely sure but he did sign and stamp the immune form when he received my results, but I'm sure any other health professional is fine. Oh I turned out not to be immune to 2/7 of the diseases so I'm not sure if I have to get a vaccination for it and redo the test or do it later on/next year and if anyone could clear that up it would be much appreciated :)

You do need a referral from your GP/Student Health to get the blood test done. If you are not immune for any of those tested, then I am sorry but you will be lined up against a wall and shot.
loljk they will offer you vaccinations next year

Hey Proshot I did the same as you and MedLab did my tests etc. If you aren't immunized against some of them I don't think you actually need to get them, the form just says show evidence of your immunization status, so what you've done should be sweet!

And Jono mine just got signed by the nurse at my GP, I hope that's ok, I think it says Health Professional on the form? :)

Nearly got me there mate, thanks

I'm pretty sure you could not even hand your immune status in and still get into med unquestioned. (But shhh, you didn't hear it from me!)

On the other hand, it makes things a LOT easier if you can get it sorted now, so do.

Moral of the story really is, as long as you make a reasonable attempt to follow the official instructions (which shouldn't be hard - give the official form to a GP and let them sort it out), small details such as whether a GP or nurse signs your form don't matter.
