International students pay ~3times the amount of tuition fees (vis a vis locals) to study here (in case you didn't know) and have virtually no chance of getting into med unless you're sponsored (with a scholarship) by your home country's government (which in my case, I don't, unfortunately).=/

What's with the international thing again?
The med class size has increased quite substantially in recent years, to the point where the med school is pretty much at maximum capacity. As a result, they've had to decrease the number of spaces available for international students.

Some international students are sponsored by their home governments (i.e. their government pays their fees via a direct agreement with Otago). These students are given priority over those applying without government support (who would have to pay the >$50,000/year on their own, and for whom there is no formal agreement with the university).

The end result of the above factors is there are essentially zero spots in med for international students without government sponsorship. Absolutely sucks for those students, but at the end of the day, the med school can't really do much about it.

Ok thanks for that gg. Man don't I feel sorry for those international people :(
When is the application for the Maori/Pacific/Rural category?
And lastly for BSNS 104 textbook- how useful is the textbook? Because I don't want to spend too much money (and time) on the eighth paper.
Thanks heaps

How did you manage to find out?

>Asked too see chem paper
>Showed them the numbers were wrong
>????
>Profit

btw guys, just as an FYI, no scaling occured and only 74% of people passed chem - 1% less than last year (roughly 16 people they said). Now, let's think of the implications of this; there were originally 1228 health scis. Let's say, hypothetically, that you only need 50% to still be in the running for med, and that 50% was in chem alone - that's taken the number down to 908! The competition is waning people. This is a good thing. Chin up and study hard, all that :)

Thought you guys might appreciate this video.
A potential new study tool to help you identify what ideas/concepts you think you understand but don't actually understand.

You can skip to 1:14.

Interesting that CHEM didn't have to scale to get that 25:25:25:25 that they supposedly like (disclaimer: Can't remember my source for that, might be wrong). And while the competition dropping sounds awesome, remember that 1) Not all the people who failed/got under 70% are actually HSFY, and 2) that happens every year. It isn't indicative of where the cut-off is going to be ;)
That said, it's always nice to see the competition dropping off, being in contention for med at the end of semester one probably puts you in ~ the top half to 60% of HSFY, so you're all doing well!

Ok, so I know I've read somewhere about Semester 2 textbooks. But I can't find it/too lazy to continue searching.
Which textbooks are you able to borrow from the library and which ones do we not need to buy?

I had a feeling that all textbooks be available from the library?

HUBS: sure there are some things tested from the textbook, but really the number of marks you gain is miniscule compared to the amount of effort you would need to put in. Why not spend those hours reading the textbook on something more useful like nailing the lecture material for CELS or CHEM 100%?

HEAL: the textbook I found helpful when I did HSFY. Not so sure about how helpful it is anymore. I would be more inclined to borrow this book off someone else.

BIOC: no, everything you need is on the lecture slides.

They completely didn't factor in my lab marks, for which I got 14/15. I've never been so happy about a 79% in my life.

Holy crap! Time to go check if they included my marks then :P! Congrats bro, welcome back to the marathon.

edit: Also, did people notice how many HSFY were changing to BSc today!? It was crazy, I recognized so many people! I heard of one guy who got 2 A+, A and then failed a paper >.<, that would suck.

That epic moment when someone indirectly tells me I study the same way as Richard Feynman. This totally worked in all the modules I used it for, if only I applied it everywhere, might've done a bit better lol!

You should go to bed earlier!!!! :P

And yeah, supposedly lots of people use this technique often -- I've done it a few times.. but nothing long term so might try it out this semester...

I got my timetable for everything and I'm enrolled for HEAL.
Enrolled on blackboard?

Strange. On PIMS I've got times for HEAL, just not enrolled to the course on Blackboard. Eek. Might wait a bit before taking action though, might pop up sometime.

I think the dept for each course enrolls people on blackboard, thus the discrepancy in times when added

Yes, we are now enrolled in all our the papers on blackboard

except Heal
