29/30 for chem is real good! I got 26 which I want to kick myself for. 2 of the questions I must have coloured in the wrong circles accidently, cos looking at my results I swear I put the right answers. Oh well. HUBS is over! That wasnt too bad, one wrong that I know of, so thats ok.

Lol UMAT is rather pointless but is something that has to be done. I heard ******** provide pretty good resources. Anyone going?
Thank goodness UMAT doesn't count so much here (like 15%?). But then again we have an interview to prepare for...

Is it true that UMAT only counts for 15%? So then what sort of marks are a good indication of doing well- anyone got an idea? It's just that I know it's different for everyone but I heard even if you think you did well you actually didn't.. confusing...

Hi, Im currently a year13 student in Auckland, just joined MSO =]
I would like to ask a few questions:

1) If I attempt HSFY at Otago but fail to get in, can i then apply for Auckland Uni Bsc (Biomed) and still be selected for the interview for MBChB if i meet the addmision requirements?

2) If the above is possible, would the selection/ interview be biased at all?

3)also, would a GPA of avg A- and a 80th percentile avg for the UMAT be sufficient chance for Otago? Or the chance of getting in is quite minimal?

4)Would anyone please have any information on the English Diagnostic Test in Otago Uni? (eg, assessing areas/syllabus/website etc...)

ps: i have emailed the HSFY admission advisors and they say there is no sample paper but there is detailed information of the English Diagnostic Test on the HSFY handbook which i cannot find.. any ideas?

Thanks HEAPS!!
a miserable year 13.....

ps: i heard a kind member of the MSO said last year most candidates got in with an A+ GPA avg, so if i only get A or A- avg, that would reduce the chance of getting in immensly?!

1) Looks like the auck guys have answered that.
Btw you definitely can't do the opposite i.e. trying for med at auckland first then wanting to try at Otago.

2) I would think it wouldn't. What that matters is how well you do in your auckland papers, UMAT and the interview. Your past shouldn't have influence on the outcome.

3) That would be quite minimal chances. The lowest combination of marks I've heard of is something like A+, 3A and 3A- which is a GPA of 7.7 out of a maximum of 9, and with 89 percentile UMAT. You'd be fairly safe if you could get majority A+ and only a few As, and also a 90+ percentile UMAT.

4) The english diagnostic test is a test designed to identify the students for whom english is not their first language, and so are going to really struggle with the english in the course. There's absolutely nothing to worry about it. The sections tested are listening comprehension, dictation and a short essay. So many students freak out but in reality there's nothing to freak out about. It's like a year 9 english test lol, and hardly ANYONE fails. In the extremely unlikely case that you do fail, you can talk to the health sci people about it and negotiate with them so that you don't have to do the ENG paper (by showing them that you've passed NCEA english and that you're not competent with english).

GPA is worth 2/3 of your final mark, so it is a big factor. Having an A or A- average would hurt your chances quite a bit compared to having a perfect 9 GPA. Having a high GPA gives you breathing room in case you don't do as well in UMAT as others (like in my case for instance). It's definitely not the end of the world with an A average, but it just means you'll have less room for error in UMAT, and similary with an A- average you'll need quite a good UMAT if you want to get in.

Theorising about the marks you'd need isn't really helpful. Unless you've done the papers you won't know how capable you are of getting the grades.

I think it also depends on your year group as a whole. Because I think our year hit a smart wave of people. But I don't know about the rest of the people in your year.

Hi, its me again~~

Would anyone know information about the competitive entry for Otago Med?
(eg, candidate numbers vs numbers actually got in,)

From what i know now, as said on the site, so its possible if i complete the Bsc (BioMed) degree in Auckland Uni then apply for competitive entry for Otago?
Again, would an avg of A- across the degree and UMAT of 80th percentile be at minimal chances of getting in again?

Thanks heaps for replying!

There's hardly any info about the sort of grades you need for competitive graduate entry. The impression I get from talking to graduates is that they worked really hard in their degree.

Yes it's possible to do a Bsc in Auckland then apply competitive entry at Otago. If you dig really far back into some of the older NZ threads, you'll see some people who successfuly made it doing just that. And of course you can apply for Auckland graduate entry too, although it seems that quite a few people get into Otago but not into Auckland when they try for graduate entry at both.

Here's the selection process:

To gain entry in the Competitive Graduates category, applicants must have completed, in the minimum academic time and within three years of the date of application, the requirements of a first degree awarded by a university in New Zealand at an academic level to be determined by the Admissions Committees from year to year. All other applicants who have completed a degree and do not meet the above requirements are considered under the Alternative category (Dentistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy) or the Other category (Medicine).
All applicants in the Competitive Graduates category are ranked on the basis of a score derived from the grades achieved in their first degree. Applicants who have completed an honours degree immediately following a first degree will have their honours grades included in the calculation.
The score for candidates from each university in New Zealand is calculated from a numerical value assigned to the grades scored. This numerical value is then multiplied by the point value of the paper and by a university factor that compensates for differences between universities in their degree structures. Scoring is based on the best 126 points (equivalent to Otago) in each year of study.
It is to an applicant's advantage to ensure that each year of study is at least equal to an Otago 126-point course. A weighting factor is applied for each year of university study.
The weighting factors for a three-year degree see the first year score multiplied by 0.5, the second year score by 1.0 and the third year score by 1.5.

As you can see UMAT isn't worth that much because all you need to do is get the minimum 25 percentile in each section. GPA is very important because that is what is going to rank you against others, and third year and second year has higher weighting too. I don't think anyone knows about what sort of GPA you need to get. There's about 50 who got in through this pathway for our class this year.

Lol...so many HSFY students worry about these tests...

Honestly, put these behind you...its the end of year in which true knowledge is tested...so keep your head high!

P.S- I got 26/30 in my first CHEM test back in HSFY...lol, and I still made it!

Do you remember what grades you got in your papers? and umat if that is applicable

I did have a 86.5 average with

90,71,100 in UMAT percentiles...

What you have to remember, is that I did the old HSFY system in which averages were alot lower...

Nice S3. How did you study for the seven papers and what UMAT preparation, if any, did you do?

Hey skyglow did you do that stuff about the knockout gene in (agouti) mice last year?
I dont get how you can assume that all the brown mice will be heterozygous for the knockout gene? Surelly from mendelian principles there would be some other combinations?
aaaaarg cells...
Also has anyone looked through the past paper for cells (2008)? its quite scarey to be honest!

Wha? No way, I can't remember this knock-out stuff! It's a good thing he asked you because I'd tell the wrong thing or something hahaha.

What other combinations would there be?
