A1 asks: Can one apply for both UNSW non-standard and lateral entry?
A1: Not that I am aware of. You can only apply one type of application as either a non-standard or lateral entry applicant. You cannot do both. Lateral Entry when I last did it did not require applicants to submit a UAC Application.

Latest info sheet on UNSW Lateral Entry attached.

Hi guys, I’m a non rural year 12 student from Victoria, Aus. I got a really bad UCAT score and I don’t know what to do. I want to do medicine (direct entry if possible), and my UCAT score is 1790 (VR: 660, DM: 600, QR: 530 and SJ: 595). Can someone please let me know what my options are? I want to consider all of them, even if it means applying in a different state. Please let me know!

___________
A1 replies: Unfortunately your UCAT doesn't look enough for the UCAT schools.
The non-UCAT schools depend on your ATAR - JCU 99+ (combined with school-location history), 99.90 for USC, Griffith, UMelb Chancellors.
If I get into Monash’s Bachelor of Science course with my ATAR, will I be able to retake the UCAT next year and then switch into the Monash medical course? I don’t know if it’s possible to do that.

Also, are those schools good for medicine?

Not sure if I missed anything in the attached doc. It doesn't say we can't apply for both UNSW non-standard and lateral entry.

I noted Lateral entry does not require a UAC application. Does that mean we can't submit one to UAC or include UNSW non-standard in the UAC app for WSU/JMP though?

No, Monash only takes students who have not started a university course and are within two years of graduating.

All schools in Australia are great for medicine, we are incredibly fortunate!

Other options include taking a gap year or starting another degree you are interested in and applying to other schools that do take non-standard applicants.

You can resit UCAT to apply to UNSW WSU JMP next year. Also JCU & Bond without UCAT.

I don't think there is Lateral entry to Monash undergrad Med. But on completing Monash BSc, apart from entry to other graduate-entry med schools, will allow you to apply to Monash graduate med school (non-Monash students not accepted). So it's 3-year BSc + 4-year Monash med.

All Aus med schools are good for the purpose. They are all accredited by the AMC Aus Medical Council for AHPRA registration to practise in Australia.

Some schools may be slightly better than others in some aspects, but med is med after all.

When I attempted lateral, I was told you are not meant to include UNSW med on preferences in the submitted UAC application. Also in the UNSW's MAP, they have Lateral Entry as a separate option in applicant type from the non-standard/standard people.

Hey All!
I got the UCAT Scores:
VR: 750
DM: 830
QR: 880
SJT: 688
ATAR was 97.3 (but I also have eas, so I am not sure if this will be the actual mark)
I am non-GWS so any advice can be good.

___________
A1 replies: Your WSU-weighted 792 is borderline for non-GWS interview. Total 2460 should be good for JMP, Adelaide, possibly UQ.
For UNSW UCAT is good but you'll need 2.5 EAS bonus points to boost 97.3 to 99.5+

Hi A1 I got 2480 on my ucat

VR:770
DM:890
QR:820

I'm non-rural, interstate for everywhere, school leaver and no other adjustment factors.
What university's do I have a good chance of? I should be able to get 99.85+ hopefully 99.95 if everything goes well.

literally every uni (probably)

Hi, I'm in my first year of uni with a 6.8 GPA. I received a 2480 UCAT(700VR, 900DM, 880 QR), and reside in GWS.

I was wondering whether I had ANY chances at ANY universities besides JMP and WSU(given I'm non standard).
Also, curious about my standing for JMP, given a 96 ATAR last year--> Do I apply as a Tertiary Student despite less than 1 year Full Time studied rn? Or do they mean 1 year of FT studied by the end of the year? tysm

___________
A1 replies: Adding to the other replies, you should get WSU & JMP interviews too. Go get 'em :)

maybe unsw considering your gpa is pretty high

Since you are a non-standard applicant as you will have 1 FT study by the end of the year, they will look at your GPA over the ATAR as they will choose the qualification with the higher score and you already meet both secondary and teritary qualification requirements. You are likely to have a shot at an interview at UNSW since you already crossed the 6.5+ GPA cutoff which is equivalent to the 99.5-99.6 ATAR median.

Just finished my ucat.
VR: 730
DM: 690
QR: 900
Total: 2320.

im applying as an nsw gws hsc student (atar estimated: 98 - 99). im applying to literally every medical and dental school in australia. what interviews would i get with tthese scores? (non rural, no eas)

___________
A1 replies: Your WSU-weighted 756 is borderline for GWS interview.
UQ Dent may be possible if you get 600+ SJT and ATAR 99+ (or 97+ with Maths C equiv). Not sure about other Dent schools.
Unfortunately I don't see a Med chance elsewhere.
woudl griffith or adl be in teh mix?

___________
A1 replies: Unlikely 2320 is enough for Adelaide interstate.
Griffith and USC are non-UCAT but you will need ATAR 99.85-99.90.

Guys how are my prospects for UQ dent given low SJT (598) but other subtests went fine (2580). Cutoffs went crazy high last year, apparently 3793 combined?

Hi everyone,
I've come here for a bit of advice after spiralling and going through this entire thread (among others) looking for answers
applying as a non-standard, bombed UCAT 1800 sjt660:( from NSW rural mm3 mm5 current first year med lab science (pathology) student at CSU with 6.3 GPA with possibility to get it to 6.5 maybe even 6.6. im applying to JCU, CSU, and JMP and throwing one at UNSW pretty much for fun

I noticed A1 talking about preferences currently I have JMP at top but wondering if I should swap CSU to top for better chance of an interview, or if anyone has any other suggestions of where I should apply, or even to defer applying and resit UCAT for a more competitive score to apply 2027 intake

Much appreciate the help.

___________
A1 replies: It's difficult to predict for rural since their cutoffs vary so much. We've seen one got CSU with 31%ile UCAT so apply to them all including JCU.
Don't worry about the order of preferences, it doesn't affect interview selection. If you make one cutoff you get one interview, two cutoffs you get two interviews etc... whether they are 1st pref or 5th pref.

Hi A1, do you know if JCU looks at the most recent university GPA, or do they consider the GPA from all degrees you have attempted? My recent studies, which I started last year in a health-related field, have a competitive GPA because I’m now motivated and more interested than I was when I was younger. However, my previous studies in engineering, with my last attempt in 2015, were very poor, with many fails. At the time, I was going through a very difficult personal period and ended up with a 1.0/7 GPA before leaving university to focus on getting my life back on track. Do you think my past poor performance will affect my chances of being considered for a JCU interview?

___________
A1 replies: JCU is tricky on this^.
On paper JCU Admissions Procedure says they use your latest 1+year GPA.
Another JCU webpage says they also look at previous studies/achievements, presumably for mitigating factors in case the latest GPA is less than ideal.
I hope your previous studies being 10 years ago JCU won't take into consideration.
Thanks for the reply A1. I just checked my QTAC application and it shows Chemistry , English, Mathematics as satisfied (yes) , under ATAR/Selection rank requirements shows yes for minimum rank to be considered for an offer. However under Institution admission rules section it shows
English Language Proficiency Type 4Not yet determined.

I completed my primary and secondary schooling overseas in a non-English-speaking country. I arrived in Australia in 2009 and am now a domestic student and Australian citizen. I have completed more than one year of study at the university level and also hold a completed Advanced Diploma of Engineering (two-year program) from an Australian university. Do you know if this will be sufficient to satisfy English language proficiency Type 4, or will I be required to sit an English test such as IELTS or PTE?

___________
A1 replies: I suggest you call QTAC to sort out. Make sure you emphasize to the person you've done/completed several years of uni in Australia.
If QTAC can't resolve then next stop JCU.

Dude all of these replies are scaring me
I got 2380
VR = 750
DM = 750
QR = 880
and I'm gws but I'm scared this won't be enough for this year given last year jumped from what like 740 to 760.

___________
A1 replies: Your WSU-weighted 776 should get GWS interview. Best of luck.

did ucat a few days ago.
VR: 790
DM: 690
QR: 880
Total: 2360.
sjt: 537

im applying as an non standard gws w/ atar 99 (2023) and gpa 6.5 (2025). what are my chances for unsw, wsu and jmp med this year?

___________
A1 replies: Your WSU-weighted 788 should get GWS interview.
GPA 6.5 & 2360 look to be borderline for UNSW, and likely not enough for JMP. But try them anyway.

You have a shot for UNSW due to your GPA + UCAT combo. Since prior years, interview cutoffs have had GPA as 6.5+. Also your ATAR is above the threshold requirement but they will look at your GPA instead due to translating to a higher score.

A1 knows more about WSU and JMP so best ask them.
