I just got my deferred JCU offer (on a gap year rn) and they are telling me that I have to accept by today. Does anyone know if accepting this offer still lets me get an offer from UNSW etc. I just dont want it to affect my school leaver status etc. Also JCU is asking me to make an student account to accept the offer, I just wanted to make sure that doing so doesnt make me illegible to receive an offer from the undergrad med schools? Thanks

Yes you need to accept/enrol so JCU knows to take away one spot from the upcoming intake. It won't at all affect your school leaver status.

Accepting the JCU offer and having a JCU student account made for you won’t have any effect on your chances at other Australian undergraduate schools.

Has there ever been cases of an interstate student being able to do their interview together with the local students? (for unis with separate interview dates e.g. unsw) I've got my grades already so they would have an actual atar to work with too.

Same here

Yes, but only where invites are actually sent out at the same time. UNSW does not do this, it sends interstate invites out later so it is not possible to attend an earlier interview. JMP have been known to allow this, but they send all invites out at once.

Regarding Western Sydney, is the only accomodation options for med students The Village? Aside non-uni affiliated options of course

I actually emailed both JMP and UNSW and they both won’t allow me to interview before the December offer round. I was in the same situation as you since I graduated in June and had all my qualifications ready. But I’m an overseas applicant so perhaps it could be different for domestic interstate. I doubt it tho

Ah that's unfortunate. Did they give a reason?

Neither participate in the December offer round so this isn’t surprising.

Nah not really. There reason was it’s just how we do things and we aren’t changing.

I know of two people personally who’ve attended earlier rounds of JMP interviews (eta: one was an NZ applicant, so technically overseas). I’d wait until you’ve actually secured an invite and then contact Med admissions again if you’re desperate to switch.

But regardless, you won’t get a December offer as JMP don’t participate until the January rounds.

I thought most people would want to try switch because jmp interview dates are 20-21st while curtin is 21-22 with unsw being on the 17th and uwa being sometime mid-late jan which seems VERY hectic if someone ends up getting interviews from all of them. Also, is there any info on last years uwa interview dates? I've done some looking around but can't find a thread with the info.

I asked when I saw on MSO a Vic student posting up her UNSW 1st round offer. She replied she didn't do Chem so wasn't eligible for Monash, she wrote to UNSW saying she wasn't waiting for a home state offer (it being the reason UNSW say they interview interstates later) she'd like a 1st round interview. They gave to her.

I know this info is on the forum somewhere but can’t find it!

Just wondering about the interviews to offers ratio at WSU for non-GWS non-rural applicants?

WSU interview roughly 50/50 GSW/non-GWS but stats show the latter get about 40% of the places. So the non-GWS ratio is about 4 to 1.

After trials my estimated ATAR was about 98 and I scored 96% in the UCAT. I have received an invite for WSU interview. There is a possibility for me to push my ATAR past 99 but it is a stretch. My preferences are UNSW unbonded>WSU unbonded>UNSW Bonded>WSU unbonded. Currently I have UNSW 1st pref and WSU 2nd pref. When are the offer rounds for each respective university? Are they after the ATAR release? Would it be reasonable to see what my ATAR is and then move wsu to 1st if my atar is too low so I don't get stuck with a unsw bonded offer (which in itself is unlikely considering my atar)? curious what the best course of action is for instates. thanks

Since you are in NSW you'd be invited if eligible to a Dec interview at UNSW and potentially can qualify for both UNSW & WSU in the Jan offer round. I suggest a week or so before this offer date you call UAC to request that if you get both offers they contact you to let you choose which.

I have made this suggestion a few times, you guys should form a lobby group and send a letter to UAC pointing out this UNSW bonded vs WSU unbonded dilemma. But no-one has taken the lead.

It partly depends whether you get a UNSW interview in the (a) locals round December or the (b) interstates round January.

(a) If you fail to qualify for a UNSW place but get WSU you will be offered WSU in the 1st offer round.

(b) If you qualify for WSU in the 1st offer round, since you have not interviewed at UNSW UAC's past practice was to hold back the WSU offer. Reason being if you later get UNSW UAC have the WSU spot in hand to offer to another applicant. If you don't get UNSW you automatically get the held-back WSU.

That's past practice, I don't know what the current practice is. UAC may give WSU to you 1st round (despite its lower pref) regardless of UNSW outcome later.

Say I’m interstate, UNSW is my first choice and WSU/Usyd is my second, how would I know if an offer is being held back from my second choice uni because no offer in the first round could also mean I’m rejected by my second choice university?

To my understanding your hypothetical WSU offer shouldn’t be held back unless you get a UNSW offer. So yes, no offer in the first round would mean that neither your first or second preference unis are ready to offer you a place at that time

The matter here is interstate students don't do their UNSW interviews until *after* this Jan offer round, so UAC doesn't know whether they will or they won't get a UNSW offer. But read on ...

In the past UAC used to have a pref status code saying like "Qualified for, offer not (yet) made pending result of a higher pref". If you see this code on your UAC application for WSU then you know that's the case. However this code seems to have disappeared from UAC list, thus I wrote above UAC may now give you the WSU offer regardless of UNSW outcome later.

(This would be at the expense of someone waiting in line for WSU, since if you also get a UNSW offer in Feb you could sit on both until March while the other student has nothing). Edited to add from LMG! <--- don't do this, anyone reading along!! (as in, don't sit on both offers until March), be kind to your fellow med-wannabes and decline any unwanted offers ASAP. Please and thank you.
