Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

For QTAC, people know they qualified for multiple offers (but I don't think actually received multiple offers) by putting UQ or Griffith first, but getting a congratulatory phone call (but no formal offer in the end) from JCU.

They get a phone call from JCU and if they don't decline over the phone (I imagine very few would!) they receive a formal JCU letter of offer in the mail. This is even when they have UQ/Griffith at a higher pref. Then if qualified for UQ/Griffith they also get this offer from QTAC a few days later.

I would assume the offer (JCU or UQ or Griffith) would have to be accepted in QTAC to be 'formal' though, right? Or is it possible to get the letter from JCU and ignore (or decline?) QTAC's UQ or Griffith offer from that point onwards?

My point being, I'd think the letter from JCU is pretty meaningless in the event of no option to accept in QTAC (because you've higher preferenced and been eligible for UQ or Griffith)? Or is that not how QTAC works?

ETA: Or can you call up QTAC after the fact and say, even though I preferenced and received UQ, I'm actually gonna take this JCU offer?

Thanks for the advice. Do you know much about the physio course - hours/intensity, how bad the drive is from the suburbs to Frankston :)/) ? (Or is there a better place to ask these questions?)

Sorry, i dont know much about the physio course apart from the MMI's during admissions. There may be a physio forum on this website (not sure since i've just recently returned) where you can ask those questions

Nope, it just needs to be date stamped by the post office by 30th September.

Ahh thank goodness! I was so sure that was the case, but I backtracked; thinking maybe I was misinterpreting the instructions!
That puts a bit of relief and less stress on my side.

My understanding is the TAC/QTAC simply directs the offer traffic, so that students with multiple offers only receive their highest pref and free up their other offers to other students. When you see an offer in QTAC it follows quickly with an offer email from the school, I think it's the school's offer that counts since it gives instructions how to accept/enroll in the offered course.

What JCU does is it bypasses this traffic directing, sends JCU offers to students even when they are in a position to receive a higher-pref offer. I have not seen the JCU offer letter to know what it says exactly but it's quite possible the students can accept/enroll in JCU independently of the other offer in QTAC.

Non-standard here, just wondering about UWS asking for my ATAR? It says I won't be disadvantaged if I leave it blank, but what could they want with the information. Would they possibly consider my ATAR if my GPA isn't high enough?

regardless, they would get your atar from uac, not a form they got you to fill for obvious reasons, so leaving it blank would make no difference.

Just wondering, which medical school/s is highest in terms of the "prestige" scale?
Prestige really doesn't matter in Australia. What you do after graduating in the hospital matters instead for the competitive specialties here in Australia. However, if you must insist, Sydney and Melbourne are ranked the highest out of the Australian universities in the worldwide biomedical sciences/medical school rankings I 've seen. One ranking had Sydney higher, the other had Melbourne.

Ultimately, "the best" medical school for you is the one that offers you a CSP place in the state you want to get an internship in.

Hi, I asked a question last night but I have another related one (: I know UniMelb has prerequisites for their postgrad med course that you do through biomed and can do through science; however what would this mean for me if I chose to do an undergrad physio degree? Obviously I won't have fulfilled these med prereq subjects in a different course at a different uni.
Thanks!

I think you just need to make sure you do them as 'breadth' subjects if they're not a standard part of your degree. They don't have to be the exact UMelb units, but they do need to be equivalent, is my understanding.

I will get Perplex to confirm :D

It depends on the university that you end up doing physio at but in general, a physio degree goes quite into depth for anatomy and physiology. So I presume the anatomy and physiology prerequisites should be covered in a physio degree. I would presume biochemistry might be an issue. If that is the case, biochemistry can be done as an elective(assuming free electives are allowed), or non-award study.

Check the UoM prerequisites database and check the approved units at all the various Australian universities and see how it matches up to the structure of a physio degree at the university(ies) you intend to do physio at.

It needs to be posted by the 30th - but you must have it date stamped by the post office if you are planning to send it that late, otherwise JCU won't consider it. Good luck!
