Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

Will there be any major implications for this year’s Med applicants as a result of the UCAT introduction?

I was wondering that myself. I wondered if JMP would lift thresholds, or if universities would change UMAT weighting. I doubt it would be much different though, because if they changed their criteria there could potentially be fewer candidates interviewing in total, thus leading to a higher rejection rate at the less preferred uni's and potentially causing universities to have to do further interview rounds. It seems safer to stick with what they know.

Hi, There

Is the JCU application letter to be posted before the 30th of september or to be recieved by the 30th of september?

I dont really want to submit tomorrow however I can if neccessary. Would really like the extra time to edit.

Nope! Crow answered the question above, but all you need to do is have it stamped by the Post Office by the 30th!
Probably get it done the 28th (because most post offices aren’t open on a Sunday/Saturday and Friday is a public Holiday for some states)

Hey guys,

if im applying for another university within the QTAC pool of uni's
how do I go about supplying my current GPA- do I need to a copy of my transcript?
or will the university im applying to simply contact my current uni on my behalf?
or is it something I need to do through QTAC itself

thanks in advance

I doubt it. The whole reason universities use the UMAT is just to decrease the pool of applicants they need to interview. And they are quite likely still looking for the same criteria as they always do. For example WSU focusses more on sections one and two, I don't imagine this will change (this year) just because a new test is being introduced next year.

Also this change has only just been announced, and a lot of interview invites are expected to be released in a bout a month or so. I personally can't imagine the faculties of the medical schools would be able to re-assess and change their admission criteria for this year's applicants quickly enough to still get invites out on time.

The only impact I can see for applicants this year is that a lot of people will feel even MORE pressure to be accepted so that they don't have to sit the UCAT in the first year it is introduced to medical schools, because like any transition this is bound to be a bit rocky.

Assuming it is a course you apply through QTAC you should only need to indicate your current uni & student number. QTAC will obtain your academic records directly.

Beautiful thanks- was just concerned given how close it is to closing dates

From what I know based on friends who applied in previous years, UWA used to have the choice of selecting Bonded Med as a preference on TISC. However, when I was selecting my preferences on TISC a couple of days ago, there wasn’t an option for BMP. Is this a case whereby UWA just allocates the BMP spots rather than students making their own preferences?

This has previously been the case at UTAS also (not through an admissions centre, but their direct application), but is now not, so it's certainly possible this has changed. Previously at UTAS it was necessary to apply to MBBS and MBBS BMP (as in, use up two lines in your preferences), but when I applied last year, it had changed and it was just the one MBBS preference.

I suspect this is what UWA have done. Now that the return of service is one year (rather than the initial 5 or 6), I suspect pretty much all applicants have begun preferencing both and are willing to accept both, so it has become a bit redundant to have them separated.

Since universities automatically allocated you to a BMP, this would mean that if you ranked high enough to receive a CSP at JMP, and were ranked high enough to receive BMP at UNSW, if UNSW is your first preference you will get the BMP offer. Doesn't this give candidates less flexibility in choosing preferences? What is the point of not letting people choose whether they want to be considered for a BMP?

And let's assume that in this scenario that a CSP is always preferred over a BMP. After that, considerations such as university location come next. So a candidate in Sydney would prefer CSP UNSW > CSP JMP > BMP UNSW > BMP JMP

Edit: as LMG noted, since the return of service is less now I suppose the uni's have figured it isn't worth the paperwork and sifting through data to consider BMP as a separate entry given that most people will preference both.

You highlight a valid concern, we have discussed this before. In the past with separate pref entries for BMP we could put UNSW CSP 1st, JMP CSP 2nd, UNSW BMP 3rd etc. But now only one pref entry for UNSW thus cannot pref separate between CSP & BMP. I don't think there is a good way around it.

What is the point of not letting people choose whether they want to be considered for a BMP?

I think in the UNSW direct application you can indicate whether or not you want to be considered for BMP (practically everyone should choose yes). But it doesn't help transfer the effect to the UAC pref list.

When you say 'doesn't help transfer the effect to the UAC list', what do you mean? Does it mean that UAC ignores the info they receive from UNSW?

Yea sorry I didn't put that phrase very well. What I meant is if you choose no to UNSW BMP then in effect you have told UAC UNSW CSP 1st, JMP CSP/BMP 2nd. But if you choose yes neither UNSW nor you can tell UAC that UNSW BMP is 3rd.

Hey guys! I hope you're all going well :)

I was wondering if any of you had made an application through QTAC for med or dentistry at Queensland University? If you have, would you mind checking to see if you can see your UMAT number on your QTAC account? I just checked my QTAC account, and I can't find my UMAT number at all, so I'm now really worried that I didn't submit my UMAT number at all and I have no idea how to add it in either! If you are able to see your UMAT number, could you please tell me how and where to see it? Thank you SO MUCH!

Any help would be enormously appreciated!

I remember 2 yrs ago someone said QTAC didn't ask for UMAT number. It seems QTAC get your scores by matching your name + DoB on ACER's listing.

Hi, Victorian student finalising QTAC preferences here, just making sure I'm doing it right :/

I'm interested in the Griffith provisional pathway from Biomedical science to medicine. Am I right in my understanding that this pathway involves 2 years of Biomedical science followed by the 4 year medicine program? Are there any 'catches' involved after selection (maintaining marks of some standard) or are you (more or less) guaranteed a place in med?

In terms of my QTAC application, do I just select Bachelor of Biomedicine (for both GC and Nathan) as per normal, and submit? I'm just making sure there are no specifics or extra requirements when applying for the provisional pathway.

Sorry if these questions are really basic,
Thanks for the help!

There are three different options you have regarding Griffith direct entry.

Two of them (Gold Coast and Nathan) involve a 2 year accelerated degree (Bachelor of Medical Science) which will be completed at either of these two campuses; this will give you direct entry into the 4 year MD which you will undertake on the Gold Coast (6 years total study).

The third option is the Bachelor of Medical Science (direct entry) at USC. This involves a three year degree, with direct entry to the 4 year MD which you will undertake on the Sunshine Coast (i.e. 7 years total study).

The conditions of gaining entry into the MD are that you:

a) Maintain a GPA of 5.0 during the undergraduate component of the degree
b) Pass the "Human Skills for Medicine" subject in the final undergraduate year.

The QTAC course codes for these three are:

233422 Bachelor of Medical Science (MD Provisional Entry for School-Leavers) - full-time
Fee: Commonwealth Supported Place - Gold Coast

228272 Bachelor of Medical Science (MD Provisional Entry for School-Leavers) - full-time
Fee: Commonwealth Supported Place - Nathan

013231 Bachelor of Medical Science (Griffith MD Provisional Entry for School-Leavers) - full-time
Fee: Commonwealth Supported Place - Sunshine Coast
