Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

Hi guys,
I remember JCU requires you to put in an extra sealed envelope on which you write the degree you're applying for and your address, can someone just point me to whereabouts on the website this is? I can't seem to find it anywhere? Also as long as I have it post marked as sent before Sep 30th it doesn't really matter if it is express post right?

We did not send an envelope as it wasnt listedcanywhere to do so. You tick on the application what you are applying for and your address is written on the envelope you send the application in.

You used to be able to post a self-addressed pre-paid enveloped with your application. That way they'd stamp it and send it back to you to confirm that they have received your application. I don't think they do this anymore however.

Hi, so this might be a bit of a stupid question but I was wondering if the GPA your uni calculates for you based on their standards is used when applying to a different uni, or if the uni you are applying to readjusts your GPA based on their standards? For example, the HD-equivalent at unimelb is 80%+, while at JCU it is 85%+. I got 82% and 84% in two of my subjects, and 85+ in my other 2 subjects. So for unimelb my gpa is 7.00. Will it also be 7.00 for jcu? Sorry I'm just very confused

Good news for you. We have had confirmation from UAC & QTAC that they don't use your percentage marks, only the grade codes indicated by your uni, so you will get HD 7 for your 82% & 84% units. The unis themselves don't deal with GPA conversion.

(For additional info, Gemsas otoh uses the percentage marks if they are shown in your academic records).

For JCU MBBS 2019 entry

First round interview offers are released on the 9th of November as I take it- this would account for predicted ATAR students, but my question is does this interview round include Non-standard applicants i.e. students who aren't year 12 leavers.
If so, this would only take into account the first semester (in my case) of my degree, does this mean that JCU would contact my university again for the January round interview offers for my updated GPA (i.e. that of my first completed year and not just my first semester)? it does seem quite tedious to do this twice- once in November and again in January? or does JCU only request the GPA of an applicant once?

any help would be appreciated

First thing to note is it's QTAC's job to chase up your GPA. We have seen in previous years non-standard applicants invited to both, either 1st round or 2nd round interviews so QTAC does send updated GPAs to JCU around December.

It is most likely that if you do receive an interview offer it will be for the second round. The most common trend is non-standards in second year or later receive first round interview offers if they get them, whereas those who only have 1 semester of results available before first round offers will generally interview in the second round - presumably because the GPA of those in first year is very susceptible to changing with the second semester of results and there is no point in JCU interviewing them if their results drop enough that they’d no longer be eligible for a place offer (and on the flip side, some applicant’s GPAs will increase enough for them to be eligible for an interview when they initially wouldn’t have been with only their first semester of results available).

Hi guys,

How does monash uni make their interview offers to interstate students (like do they rank students? or does everyone over the threshold UMAT and ATAR get an interview)? Even though your UMAT may be above 50 in all sections, will they not consider you if you aren't as high as other people?

Yes, pretty much. 50/50/50 is the minimum to be eligible, but in reality, the required UMAT score (depending a bit on ATAR) is much, much higher than this, especially for non-rural applicants.

They rank you (and even for in-state students they rank you) - getting just over 50 in each section is never anywhere close enough for this.

Oh right ok, I see
also does anyone know approximately how many non-rural interstate students are interviewed?

If I recall correctly, it got changed so that now you can't sit it before accepting your offer. You have to sit it in third year instead. Hopefully Perplex can confirm.

No it is no longer possible to do the interview before you start the degree. They did allow you to do it when VTAC offer came out but this has, of late, ceased and now all Scholar's students do their interviews in 3rd year along with everyone else.

I think you just need to make sure you do them as 'breadth' subjects if they're not a standard part of your degree. They don't have to be the exact UMelb units, but they do need to be equivalent, is my understanding.

I will get Perplex to confirm :D

Hello apologies for the lateness of this reply. You will have to satisfy the pre-requisites either as breadth subjects or do them as CAP subjects (you have to pay for these out of pocket from the best of my knowledge).

Hi, first time user of MSO (and am I relatively new reader too), sorry if these questions (which are scattered throughout this long winded post... oops) have been asked many times :/ I'm from VIC.

I decided to plan towards doing undergrad medicine next year (yr 12 this year) and did the UMAT but didn't do so great (med was never a lifelong dream of mine so I guess I approached the UMAT too lightly; oh well). JCU and Bond aren't quite realistic for me (money/location etc), is Griffith my only option for a solid undergrad pathway? (Correct me if I'm wrong, which I could well be; do they offer a 2 year undergrad with a provisional spot in MD for the following 4 years?)

Otherwise, I've been looking at plan Bs and personally the last thing I want to do is waste my time. Until recently I was totally caught up in the whole Biomed/Sci undergrad (3 yr) then postgrad medicine pathway because of the way that it's portrayed by universities but am I right in gathering that really, unless you have an ATAR >99.9 which gets you the Melbourne $300k spot or in the top 50 Monash students, your chances aren't any better than coming from any other degree? If that's right, then I think I might look at Physio as this was my interest outside of medicine.
Excuse my lack of knowledge but would this mean I'd do the degree, do the GAMSAT in the last 2 years and then, if successful, apply for med at UniMelb or Deakin (or Monash if I do physio there)? Am I eligible for the UMAT while doing physio?

Hopefully someone can make sense out of these questions and provide any answers :) And please let me know if this plan sounds feasible or if there is anything I'm missing out on... I am quite overwhelmed with the process!
Thanks!!

I have seen that many others have responded to you but I thought I'd take the time to respond (I may have already responded to replies above).
Just to clarify that at UOM >99 guarantees you a FFP spot in the MD (provided you pass the interview). An ATAR of >99.9 guarantees you a CSP spot (provided you pass the interview).
Correction: even for the other 25 spots at Monash you must have a Monash health-oriented/Science degree.

Yes you are correct in your assumption, you will be able to do physio, say at Monash and then study for the GAMSAT and also apply for the 25 spots. I just want to say that getting a good GPA in physio is extremely challenging and it's something you should consider; that is, it won't be easy getting a competitive GPA for medicine/WAM for Monash.

For Monash we've worked out from the number of MMI circuits & sessions, about 500 Vic/rural students, 100 non-rural interstate.

EtA: This is for ~240 places, the 1 in 2.5 success ratio is the best among the undergrad schools.

Is there a table listing out all interview invitation email release and actual interview dates of all Medical School?

For those with provisional medicine entry (UQ, Flinders, Griffith etc) course, are all of them NOT guaranteed for the MD program after the first 2-3 years of the double degree? e.g. Flinders mentioned in their website that 75% of their MD will be reserved for their own students. What will be their selection criteria for the MD then. How about UQ?

Should I then put UAdel as first preference on SATAC and Flinders second, so that I could get the first preference as a guarantee medicine course?

Thanks

hi guys,

I just sent my JCU application but I also got it with signature, but I realised that it is delivered to a PO box, so will someone be able to sign it? will they still get my letter???

The 75% is of Flinders' remaining quota for Gamsat entry. The places offered provisionally to Y12s are a separate quota. All provisional offers (except UoM) are practically guaranteed, only subject to fairly lenient conditions like GPA 5.0.

Thanks. So for Flinders, once you get into the Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine course, I only need to achieve GPA 5.0 to get into the MD? Thanks.

I can't find where Flinders states the conditions. Flinders is somewhat different to UQ/UWA (where you can choose from a range of degrees for the undergrad) in that you will be doing the specific B Clin Sc, and it seems this is combined with MD into a double-degree course. Maybe that means you are only required to pass the B Clin Sc

I don’t understand your question. What needs signing?

I think cook refers to the recepient having to sign upon delivery of a tracked letter/parcel. I think the question is best for Auspost to answer but it should be fine, they know what they're doing :)
