Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

hey guys, is it possible to get an interview invite to a uni you didn't apply to? XD

I feel like this a trick question.

I've heard of people getting offers to courses they've not applied to (UTAS - BMedRes Guaranteed Entry, for example), but I don't know how you could get an invite to an entire university you've not applied to as how would they even have your contact details?

Hi guys,

Just wondering what kind of clubs and societies CSU has at it's Orange campus? thanks! (I've heard some thing about a creative arts one and social sports?)

Unfortunately we don’t have any regular posters who are current CSU students. Hopefully someone swings by and sees this, but your best bet is probably the uni’s website.

I got PM'ed this question, putting it here for general info
"I'm a bit confused about an email I got from WSU yesterday. I'm rural (VIC) and have an interview with them in november, but they sent an email saying they're offering early offers to rural candidates who have them as preference #1, and that they will only use MMI rankings to determine these early offers. Will WSU be able to see what preference I have them as?"

We think the unis don't but can see your prefs if they wanted to. However it is NOT supposed to affect your getting a place offer from them. How it normally works is:

- By 20th Dec WSU will have finalised the offer list for their rural applicants and send it to UAC.
- If you are on that list and WSU is your 1st pref, your UAC application will have "Offer made" indicated and UAC advises WSU to follow up with the offer email to you.

- Otoh if WSU is not 1st (and offers for the higher prefs are not known until mid-January) your UAC application will show for WSU "You are guaranteed an offer to this course if you have no higher preferences for which you are competitive for an offer". UAC also advises WSU to NOT send you the offer email yet

What WSU means in that email is it must be 1st pref if you want to receive the offer on 20th Dec. If not then mid-January you will receive either a higher pref offer or at least this WSU offer.

Having been in exactly this situation myself last year, and having the process explained to me when I attended the interview, I can basically confirm this. WSU don’t allocate the offers based on preferences, UAC release them based on preferences. It was made very clear to me that, if WSU ended up being the highest uni I qualified for, I’d get the offer in the first official Med round, but if I wanted the offer before Christmas, I had to preference WSU first, effectively to get around the UAC system that would otherwise make me wait until Jan.

Where you preference WSU won’t affect your chances of an offer, but may affect the timing of that offer if you’re a rural applicant.

Having a S1 of only 50 and S1+S2 = 112. Didn't have any interview offer from JMP, UAdelaide, WSU. Will there be second rounds for UAdelaide?

Can I remove JMP and WSU out from my UAC preference list assuming that I will definitely NOT get an interview/offer? Do I wait until I got the email from WSU telling me that I am out for 2019?

There were second rounds for UAdel last year. They took place via phone and were in January (or maybe even early Feb) I believe. I'd wait until you get rejection emails, unless there is pressing urgency.

Hi LMG,

In a situation such as this for UAdel, does this mean they've accepted most of those that were interviewed originally? Do you know what the chances of getting in are after getting an interview? (e.g. 1 in 3 people)

I don't know the reasons for Adelaide's top-up phone interviews but most unlikely due to having accepted most of those interviewed.

Chances of getting a place offer in round number:
1 in 2.5 : Monash
1 in 3 : UNSW, WSU, UWA, Curtin
1 in 4 : JMP, JCU
1 in 6 : Adelaide (if they interview ~800 as published).

Thanks a ton A1!!! Do you happen to know the stats for CSU interviews as well?

Hi,
I'm not sure if this question has been answered (couldn't find it), but I was wondering the process of converting 4pt GPA scale to 7pt GPA scale? On the UWS med site, it states to times your 4pt scale GPA by 1.75, however I was reading around on some threads outside MSO (reliable, I know), and a few people have said that UWS actually calculate your GPA on their scale (HD is 7, D is 6 etc.). What I am trying to ask in this load of ramble is: how do you convert 4scale to 7scale GPA? By multiplying, or by converting your results straight on the 7 scale?
Thanks in advance! :)

No simple conversion to my knowledge. You need to consult the uni website and figure out how many points they allocate for a grade - e.g. HD = 7, etc. You then need to figure out whether the uni weights years differently. You then need to multiple your GPA grade by the credit point number for that unit (e.g. 7x6). Do this for every uni in a GPA year and divide by total credit points - e.g. doing 8x6 credit point units, and getting all HDs (336/48 = 7.0 for that year). Apply weightings by multiplying years - e.g. if second year is double then multiple the above result by 2. Do this for all three years, and if there is weighting, divide by 6, if not divide by 3.

Thanks so much Perplex! I thought the multiplication conversion seemed a bit weird, and it makes a huge difference... Anyway, huge sigh of relief! Thanks again!

Having a S1 of only 50, S1+S2 = 112 UMAT total 174 (84th percentile); not much offers left now. UNSW ATAR requirement too high to achieve. Sad.

Hey Michael, sorry to hear that. I understand your position and it can be really tough to take sometimes. If you haven’t read this thread yet, I’d recommend you do so: Unhappy with your UMAT result? Read this!

NO. Rehearsed responses aren't good responses.

In my opinion the best thing you can do is to really think about why you want to study med, how you imagine that career to be, and form a genuine opinion on some hot topics in medicine (controversial/moral such as abortion and euthanasia, closing the gap and working with indigenous communities, rural health, vaccination refusal etc). If you've thought about it and can answer with an honest and well thought out response when these topics come up that will go a long way.

The two main things you can do: be honest, and in role plays focus on the person, not just the problem. (N.B. This is just from my interview experiences and chatting to interviewers at my uni following acceptance)
