Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

Hi,
What would UTAS UMAT/ATAR requirement for rural interstate applicants be?
Is there a S2 hurdle?
Thanks

ATAR hurdle is 95.00, UMAT (also likely hurdle from what I’ve gathered) is 150/300. Biggest deciding factor is the written application. There’s no S2 hurdle for rural applicants.

Hey guys! Quick question -
I'm a non-school leaver applicant for Med at JCU in my first year of a bachelors degree, I've submitted my application and my GPA is competitive for non-rural applicants, 7.0, however, I did not complete Maths B equivalent in Year 12 (I'm from Vic) which is listed as a prerequisite for entry into the course. Does this disqualify me as an applicant or are there any bridging courses or other ways to complete this prerequisite?

Yes, without a Maths B equivalent you are not eligible for JCU Med. You will need to contact JCU and see what bridging course they recommend to tick this off. I’d do that ASAP if I were you so you can show them a summer school enrolment form.

I just contacted them and am planning on doing one of the bridging courses, but it will not be completed by the time interview offers are released, will this mean I am not eligible for an interview even if the course will be completed by the time course offers are made?

Did you ask them when you contacted them? This would have been the best way to get the info.

Hi it’s me again, I’m sorry for all of my questions but I really do appreciate the help! This q is about WSU medicine eligibility with fail marks in uni.

I just came out of a uni exam and I feel like I’m at risk of failing the subject due to not meeting the minimum final exam mark requirement (just a hunch but won’t know until results are released on November 29th)

I’ve had a look at what my GPA would be if I fail that one subject (counting it as a mark of 0 in the GPA calculation) and go as expected in my other 3 subjects (Ds and HDs), and it will still be above the minimum 5.5 for GWS & more than 1 year of tertiary study.

My understanding is that even if I fail this subject, my GPA > 5.5 will still make me eligible to receive a place if I go well in my interview. Is this correct, or is there some sort of catch regarding fail marks? (I haven’t read anything about it but not certain)

Additionally, is it possible that they will use my GPA from up to last semester? Or will this semester definitely be included in the GPA.

What was your atar and do you expect to complete your degree this semester? try to edit your previous post instead of making a new post.

If you have now completed one or two years of uni, then WSU will use either your ATAR or your GPA to determine your eligibility, whichever is higher.

If you have now completed three years and will be eligible to graduate, they will only use your GPA. If your GPA, including any fail grades, is above the minimum required to be eligible, then that’s all you need. The presence of a fail grade on its own won’t matter, it’s your overall GPA that they look at.

And for your last question, yes, they will use this semester in your GPA calculation.

LMG! If they have fail a subject this semester, doesn't this mean they would not be considered under completed degrees?

There's no option to edit my previous post sorry. My ATAR was below all the cut-offs for WSU so I'm 100% sure it won't be used. I've just finished my 2nd year of a 3-year degree, with current GPA ~6.3

Awesome, thank you! Such a relief because my GPA is well above the 5.5

Hey Billbob,

I had the same issue as you :)
I had a lot of contact with jcu admissions and found out that the best course to do is the maths track bridging program offered through university of Adelaide. It’s much cheaper than doing the senior maths course through unilearn and also it consists of 8 assessments rather than tests etc.

JCU admissions told me that as long as you start doing it now and finish it by early December latest around 15th December I think from memory- you can still get an interview offer (first or second round). JCU accepts results from QTAC till January 7th for the 2019 intake.
Just make sure once u start the course (start ASAP), ring QTAC ASAP and ask them to add this into your qualifications list 2018-2018 (to be completed by December).

Hope this helps! All the best!!

Q: I currently have a 5.43 G.P.A and i have a .88FTE do you think that that is sufficient enough for entry to USYD medical science (90 Atar)? and if not, what G.P.A do you think would be more reasonable?

Please see this USyd link > Undergraduate academic requirements
scroll down to the section Domestic students Applying with studies in a bachelor's degree

Admission requirements for applicants with bachelor's degree studies
  • Applicants with an average credit will be able to apply to courses with an ATAR up to 90.
This corresponds well with the table we found showing with 1+ FTE GPA 5.1 = Selection rank 90. USyd doesn't say clearly whether you need higher than the stated credit average with 0.88 FTE; going by the table GPA 5.43 should be fine since it's given Selection rank 91. But you check directly with USyd to be sure.

Table > GPA to ATAR conversion

(I should add that you should consult a few seniors here whether it's advisable to do a MedSc degree).

Hi all,

In 2018 I started a degree in Chemical Engineering/Maths, and I am transferring to Biomedical Science in 2019, both at Newcastle uni.

When I apply for medical school at the end of next year, what GPA will they look at? I’m given to understand separate GPA’s are given for separate degrees and it is not a cumulative thing.

Any help is appreciated! :)

Your previous 3 years of a complete bachelors. The Eng/Maths will only count if you get credit points in your Biomed degree.

So, if I was to get a GPA of 6 next year (for example) this is the only number that will be taken into consideration for my selection into Newcastle’s undergrad med program?

Non-standard application to JMP doesn't require a completed degree (to be based solely on for the GPA) so potentially they could count all the units you've done so far. But the requirement is rather modest at 4.8+, can you get 4.8+ with just the MedSc or combined with Eng/Maths to cover both bases?

WSU requires 6.1+ though, if this is not possible with Eng/Maths combined you should call WSU to check directly and tell us how they consider a mix.

At both these schools GPA or ATAR is a hurdle requirement, just above is as good as much higher.
