Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

If you definitely don’t want to go to Armidale (which is not something you have any control over), then you’ve probably answered your own question.

What I’d probably do is put JMP first preference. See what happens after first round offers come out. If you get Armidale, rearrange preferences and keep fingers crossed you were also eligible for UNSW and will therefore get offer in next UAC round. We’ve heard from multiple sources that it’s basically impossible to have your campus switched for JMP.

Also, don’t forget there’s a chance you get Port Mac at UNSW.

If they were eligible for UNSW wouldn't they receive definitely receive this offer in the next round?

yeah but I don't really back myself for getting an offer in the second round since there is even less spots up for grabs, making my pretty average chances even lower haha

Your chances have to do with the spots available. If you were eligible for UNSW in the first round but it was lower down your preferences, that doesn't mean you have forfeited the place. It just means you get offered at a higher preference. If you don't change your preference order than UAC won't consider you for the later rounds, but if you do change the order then you will be considered.

The rule is to preference as #1 the uni you want the most.

Yeah, what q2017 said. If you’re eligible for UNSW but have JMP your first preference, if you change your preferences, you’ll get the UNSW offer you would have got in round one. The key is, you need to be eligible for the offer in the first place!

rightio, I guess i'll be putting JMP higher. Thanks q2017 and LMG! . This whole offer thing still kinda confuses me after 3 years of it all haha but I'll take your word(s) for it haha

There is a January Round 2 as well.

UNSW Med won't necessarily participate in the 25th Jan Round 2. Their next offers after Jan Round 1 are usually the Feb round for 2nd round interviewees (plus any extra offers back to 1st round interviewees).

I did this last year myself (swapped preferences and got two Med offers) so it can definitely work, assuming you’re eligible for both.

ETA: actually yes, I was just about to add what A1 has just said. Due to when they hold second round interviews (I think), the next round of offers for UNSW will possibly be the start of Feb, but it won’t change anything re. your eligibility.

Hi all I just got an offer for one of the other courses I applied for from UAC and when I scrolled to the bottom of the email it said this. Any idea whats going on? I recall LMG! said something somewhere about a similar thing she got.

Thanks :)

Let me just check my UAC correspondence (I knew I kept it for a reason!). What I noticed was that my code on my actual online application/preferences page in UAC changed to say I was ineligible for JMP. It was a lie and I got a first round offer.

ETA: information regarding other applications was not included in UAC offer correspondence last year, so I didn’t get similar to you, but I suspect the same issue is still occurring and it’s just a matter of UAC beng notoriously incorrect with their use of the codes. Definitely give them a call if you want to know for sure, though.

Hey will WSU be likely to send out rejection emails for today's early offer round to rural applicants?
Thanks

Hey Team

Ethical question for you. I got an offer to UWS which I will accept as it was my first choice uni (and I’m absolutely thrilled). I’m really curious about my performance in JMP though and would be keen to know if they would offer me a place purely out of curiosity. My question is would you do this if you had no intention of accepting a place? I know first hand how stressful waiting can be and don’t really want to inflict that on a hopefully candidate that could get offered my place earlier.

^^mdoug you can probably make JMP your 1st pref for the main offer round and see if you got an offer (but you wouldn't have to accept it). I think JMP will offer you a place either way (if you get an offer from them), so I don't think it would make a difference by making it your first preference..

Congrats on the WSU offer! :)

Today I went to change my QTAC preference. For JCU, Course description says something like this
Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery full-time Fee:Commonwealth Supported Place Closed.

What do they mean by Closed. Have they already made their decisions in selecting candidates for commonwealth supported places. So the candidates who are selected after this have to pay more fees?

I think that means you can't add the preference onto QTAC now.

Me personally, yes I would be curious but given that a person thinking they don't receive an offer can impact how they might perform in a summer course or GAMSAT prep, I would just let it be. You could always call the university up after the January Round 1 and ask them why you didn't receive a spot and see if they tell you.

Edit: mdoug i think that is a moot point because if you got a JMP spot you won't need GAMSAT prep

JCU have a deadline for written applications to be sent in + course preferences added so they have sufficient time to mark the applications, select applicants for interview and then subsequently select applicants for place offer. They can't have people jumping in at late December when they've already released the first round of interview invites and are very close to releasing the second round.

This is good advice, I don’t have anything to gain by finding out but could totally save someone some stress by waiting an extra few weeks. Hopefully they’ll just tell me over the phone
