Quick Questions Thread #2: 2018-2019

Plopper Pig, I believe WSU makes earlier offers to rural applicants (only) in December (IIRC LMG! received an early offer last year), but the main offer round for non-rural students will still be UAC’s January round - so if you are non-rural there wouldn’t be anything to gain from changing your preferences unless you’re aiming for a non-med course that participates in an early offer round.

Can absolutely confirm this to be the case. Rural applicants only for the early WSU offers.

Sorry to be the most clueless person in this thread but if an offer comes from WSU is it via email to me directly or do I need to log in and check UAC?

Okay, so, at 12.50am I received an email from UAC saying "you have correspondence regarding your application" and prompting me to log into UAC. I then received a second email from UAC at 2.50am congratulating me on my undergraduate offer. Neither of these emails told me what the offer was for, rather both prompted me to log into UAC for more information. I then received an email from WSU directly at 7.32am with all the offer details and what to do next.

This process was exactly the same for my JMP offer in January.

Just a question regarding the WSU offers that will be realised on Thursday, do these offers need to be accepted within a certain time frame? If not does this mean that no further rural offers will be made until the second January offers? Presumably people may be waiting to hear from other uni's in the Jan round one offers so may not accept or decline a WSU offer until after this. Just trying to get an idea of how long the wait will be to hear about an offer if I don't get one on Thursday.

Is WSU your number 1 preference?

If you receive an offer you can accept it, and then once you have accepted you can rearrange your preferences. If you get another offer in another round you would then have 2 offers. I don't know what the deadline to accept is but I would imagine it would be the last date that preferences can be changed for the next UAC round.

So I think if we don't get an early WSU offer this week we wouldn't be likely to hear anything from UAC until the main offer round in Jan. The presenter in Newcastle (JMP) said what you can do is accept the WSU offer in the early round, then re-order your preferences so that JMP (or UNSW) is top, and then if you get a main round offer from JMP you can choose to accept that instead and cancel your acceptance of the WSU offer

I just checked the UAC Offer Dates and didn't find one for the day CSU offers came out. Would this be the reason why UAC acted differently then i.e. sent the emails stating a CSU offer rather than prompting us to log into UAC, and didn't update the CSU status to "Offer made"?

EtA: This would also explain why CSU advised to keep CSU at pref #1 until end of December, for the status to be updated appropriately with the Dec offer round coming up.

Hey guys,
I got an atar of 97.45 and 95% in the UMAT. I was wondering how good my chances are of getting into medicine, especially at Adelaide. Also, if I have med as a second preference, would it hurt my chances of getting in? So if someone got the exact same results as me, but they had med first and I had it second, would he get in over me?
Thanks for the help

The only reason having UAdel Med as your second preference could work against you is if you qualify for an offer for your first preference. If someone has the exact same result as you and it’s down to the two of you for the last spot (very unlikely!) then they’ll find a different way to split you, it won’t be to do with your preferencing.

Thanks a lot. But how about my chances of getting into medicine?

We can't help much with just those two numbers, what about which state are you from, your UMAT section scores, any bonuses etc?

Most I can say is your best chances are, if you got an interview there, 1 in 3 at WSU and 1 in 4 at JMP. With Adelaide, if you get the UES bonus to help boost your 97.45 ATAR you'd have a reasonable chance, otherwise it could be as low as 10% (since ATAR counts 40% while your strong UMAT only 20% toward the final ranking).

I'm from South Australia. For UMAT, s1 is 67, s2 is 54, s3 is 66. Overall raw score is 187. The only bonus points I can get is from doing math and English which doesn't count towards medicine. And I got an interview offer for JMP, not for WSU though.

A1 replies: Without bonus I don't think you will get an invite from Monash or UNSW. You might get one from Curtin if you applied. If you did well at the JMP interview you stand as good a chance as anyone, Adelaide is less promising but you never know until offers day. Best of luck.

Hi MSO, I know this is really last minute as preferences are due today (don't worry, I've put a lot of thought into it, just wanting clarification/extra info). If someone could just check that my understanding is correct and perhaps offer any info/advice, that would be very helpful.

Firstly, I am interested in med and physio. I live in Vic and if I got into Monash undergrad Med I probably would've put it over physio, but I didn't receive the UMAT I needed so I decided on physio as no. 1. I believe I could've been accepted into med interstate (ATAR of 99.75) but I decided that i didn't want to do med enough to justify moving and then living interstate (personal decision !!) and so for now I will stick with physio.
However, if I start physio and decide I'd still prefer med, are my options;
1. Do UMAT during first 1-2 years of physio degree and apply for undergraduate courses (these are only interstate, right?), then start med before finishing physio degree.
2. Finish physio degree and attempt regular postgrad entry. (More options). Is this feasible for most/all schools, coming from a physio degree? (even if I have to complete some prerequisite subjects?)
Also, am I right in my understanding that there are (few, but some) Monash postgrad med spots for students in other courses such as Physio that don't require the GAMSAT? I know these would be very competitive, but just wondering.

Finally, a few questions about my other preferences; I'm quite confident I will get into physio but just in case, as I've read many times here that pursuing an undergraduate degree which will qualify you for work is much more useful than something like biomed, I've put Medical Imaging and Pharmacy on my preferences too. In terms of these 2 courses, can anyone give me any info on which has better job prospects or even satisfaction? I've done research into both (And probably won't end up doing either), but any extra info or advice on which to place higher can't hurt!

Thanks so much for the help. Hopefully my understanding is correct and you can see sense in my decisions (plz assure me). If there are any significant problems you see in my reasonings please let me know!! Good luck to anyone else submitting preferences (:

lilzab - Your understanding of all your options seems pretty spot on (with the exception that you’ll be sitting UCAT, not UMAT, from now on for undergraduate courses). However, have you bothered to apply interstate for Griffith or Flinders given your ATAR? I’d advise you do that this year through another TAC, then defer an offer if you were to receive one. This way you could start Physio at Monash, but then if you decided you’d prefer to study medicine interstate, you could simply commence the course in 2020.

ETA: You aren't eligible for Griffith or Flinders provisional entry if you have a record of tertiary study - therefore you would need to defer the Monash physio offer as well if you wanted more time to think about whether you are willing to move interstate for medicine (during which time you could also sit the UCAT and re-try for Monash medicine for 2020 entry).

In terms of job prospects, while I’m no expert, I think the pharmacy job market is becoming very saturated - and certainly getting a hospital pharmacy job is very, very competitive. You’d be much more likely to find a community pharmacy job, if you were to find one at all. In that regard, I’d expect you to have less difficulty finding a job in medical imaging (but I’d recommend actually talking to some pharmacists and radiographers to hear their perspective as well).

Good luck :)

is it possible to be able to sit the psychometric test at bond with an atar of 96.9?
This will depend on what the ATAR cutoff is. I believe last year we had an applicant with a 96.95 report an interview invite, so you’ll just have to hope that the cutoff isn’t higher than 96.9. After you get an invite to the psychometric testing, your ATAR is no longer taken into account at Bond.

Excuse my lack of awareness but are you saying it’s still possible to apply to these interstate courses for next year? I thought it was too late?

Fixed closing dates - QTAC Under Griffith for Medical Science (provisional entry) it says
Applications close 28 December 2018, however applications received after 14 December may not be assessed in time.
If you want to do this I’d suggest applying and adding it to your preferences ASAP - remember that there are two rounds of offers so I wouldn’t stress overly about the “applications may not be assessed in time”. Maybe A1 can confirm if anyone’s done this in the past and what the eventual outcome was.
