UCAT Results Discussion 2019

The z-scores are calculated on the applicants in contention, its standard deviation is much tighter than 25.

To illustrate, 95%ile was 190, 99%ile starts from 200, mine was 235. Whatever the SD was I was 3 times better over 99th compared to 99th over 95th.
Similarly with FunTimes' 3540, 3 times better over a 3000 (97th?) compared to 3000 over 2840 (90th).
This could also possibly point to Adelaide not employing z-scores to rank their applicants post-interview - you mentioned you only managed to snag a second-round BMP from Adelaide despite a 99.80 and godly 235, which seems unlikely had z-scores been employed.

Exactly, Mana confirmed Adelaide has been using ranks for ages.

hey guys,
I'm from VIC and have a 2830 UCAT, predicted 99-99.3 atar. Will I have a chance at gaining an interview for Monash? Thanks

Just out of curiousity, how many seats are there for graduate entry in UQ? Is it similar to the provisional entry or would it be greater?

It's 50/50 split. Used to be 160/160, after giving away 35 spots to Griffith SC campus it's now 140/140.

I have a 96% ucat, but I'm going to get a pretty low atar, maybe around 93/94. Is there any chance of getting into any unis beside JMP? I'm not rural.

You should have got an Adelaide interview but it will be tough to compensate for the ATAR in the offer round.

Your UCAT will rule you out of UQ.
The rest will depend on how your A levels result converts to ATAR. For Flinders, Griffith, and probably Utas, you'll need a high 99. For UWA, above 99 and hope that your UCAT is enough. For Curtin, it will be a combination of your UCAT and ATAR conversion. Your UCAT is probably on the lower side, but fingers crossed.
Thank you for your reply LMG! Do you know if there's anyone else on this forum that might happen to know how my grades are converted into an ATAR (perhaps someone who has also done A Levels?) I have found a conversion service by UAC but it's pretty expensive. Thank you in advance for your help!

From what I’ve been able to gather, some universities convert A levels differently to others so it’s not really a matter of knowing a single conversion method and just applying it to all Unis, unfortunately.

You might have to give each of the Unis you have applied to a call to see how much they will divulge but, heads up, other users here haven’t had much luck getting clear responses.

For UWA definitely above 99 (look at the conversion table on their website), griffith you will most likely need 4 A levels.

Universities in Victoria, WA and Tasmania look at your best 3 subjects, all the other states require 4 subjects.

For general info, we have seen in print USyd gives 4A*s 99.95 and 3A*s 99.50 (4th subject not required). These appear to coincide with USyd's requirements for its double-degree Med and Dent interviews i.e. a chosen target rather than through mathematical determination.

I found this Cambridge document (page 7-8) showing consistently 2.x% of the A-level cohorts achieve 3A*s
> https://www.cambridgeassessment.org...es-awarded-the-a-grade-at-a-level-in-2012.pdf

In Australia 2.x% of Y12/ATAR students is around 1% of the Y7 cohort that ATAR ranks are based on, iow 3A*s is more/less equivalent to 99.0+/OP1.

In Qld to convert OP1 to a more fractional ATAR I believe QCAA use something called Field Position to split OP1 into 20 ranked sub-groups 99.0 to 99.95. No such thing in A-levels.

If this were up to Gemsas they would say 3A*s is in the range of 99.0 to 99.95, since it's indeterminate they give it the midpoint 99.50. That's probably a fair value. Asking for 99.80 for Griffith is too much I think.

Australia-wide Y12 cohort is around 160,000 , 8000 fewer Qld is -5%.

UQ offer ~100 non-rural places, last year bonded went to 93rd %ile = 8 %ile brackets so roughly 12 places per %ile. All else being equal this year will fit in 95 applicants at 93%ile, the 5 "extra" places equates to a drop of about 0.4 percentile.

How's that for my maths? :)
where did 8000 QLDers go?

Anyone think UQ Dent cutoff will be raised higher than 93ish? I'm starting to see some worrying trends in terms of cut-off scores for other unis, thankfully I got some offers but UQ is definitely my first choice.
