UCAT Results Discussion 2019

ATAR: 97.55, UCAT: 2990 (96%). How competitive are may chances for UQ in the rural stream? I qualify for two bonus points for maths and two for being rural. If whatever reason I do not qualify for RAS I will only have two bonus points, how competitive will my chances be in the general stream? Thanks in advance
Based on previous years you should most likely be getting an unbonded UQ offer regardless of whether or not you qualify as rural :)

Course Type: Med
Offer Received: ..
University: Flinders
UCAT:
73%
ATAR or GPA: 99.95 with UES
Special Considerations: UES

Other Information: non-rural
Does anyone think i have a shot at flinders medicine with 99.95 ATAR and 73% UCAT - non-rural applicant. I think my UCAT is way too low to get an offer.

These were scores that landed users place offers last year:
209 (99th%ile) 75/56/78, 99.70+EAS, CSP
(92nd%ile), 99.90, EAS, CSP
179 (89th%ile) 67/58/54, 99.95, rural, CSP
163 (71st%ile) 58/58/47, 99.95 with UES, rural, CSP

159 (68th%ile) 53/53/53, 99.95 with UES, CSP
I'd be surprised if your scores weren't enough for a place offer this year! Good luck :)

Yeah i'm just a bit worried that the ucat scores of everyone applying is higher this year. So 73% might not cut it, but fingers crossed!!

Still putting my money on January, having witnessed medicine offer rounds in previous years...

Myself I just got caught off guard saying all interstate offers are early Feb when in fact Unsw has changed it to Jan 23rd this year. So things do change.

Hello all, 2019 HSC graduate here.

I got an ATAR of 97.60 and would like to know (generally) what percentile/UCAT scores are required for interviews. Mainly looking at:

- UNSW
- UOA (Adelaide)
- WSU
- UON/UNE (JMP)
- Monash
- UOWA (Western Australia)
- Curtin

I have been unable to find information regarding UCAT cut-off scores from these Universities and I'm assuming they keep those confidential. Would highly appreciate some insight from you all.

Thanks!

Hi welcome to MSO. Best to take a look in the top post of this thread > 2020 Entry Interview Invites - Collated (DATA ONLY)

then ask if you have more questions.

Thanks for linking me that thread. I've noticed quite a lot of sections do not have ATARs specified for their successful applications. Is this because of the UCAT score being the sole determinant for interviews or is it because of another issue?
Yes, whatever information there is what was used to determine if the individuals received an interview. E.g. in the JMP section, only UMAT scores are shown as those were what determined who got interviews.

Also, based off the replies I have seen on that thread; is it safe to say I still have a decent chance at Med provided I get a UCAT score that sits within the 95-100th percentile?
Yes, 95-100th percentile would give one quite a few interviews at the unis you specified though that is easier said than done. Note that different universities use different criteria for offers so interview can play quite a significant part (in some cases as essentially the only deciding factor).

I don't think your ATAR would be high enough for UNSW, Monash and potentially UWA (though nothing wrong with an application).

Your second post mentions you starting first year of university. That would disqualify you from some of the universities you mentioned above. Could you elaborate on your plan for next year?

I am a little confused by the way you put your question. You are a 2019 HSC grad but asking about any med chances at this stage, is that for next year?

First take a detailed look in this table > [Undergrad] - (2019 Updated) Med schools Selection Criteria Y12s & Non-standards

you will see which schools you would be eligible for and how they use ATAR/UCAT to select interviewees.

With 97.6 & 95ish %ile you would get an interview with JMP and Adelaide. Possibly WSU if you have good section scores in the right sections. Your ATAR if without EAS adjustments (bonuses) would more/less rule you out of the other schools.

If you start uni in 2020 then apply as a non-standard you are limited to three schools JCU, JMP, WSU. (UNSW is out of question due to ATAR). Again look in the Non-standard section in the Criteria table for how they consider ATAR or GPA.

A 97.6 ATAR unfortunately won't make quite a few of the unis that heavily weigh ATAR into the selection process.
However, with a 95-100th%ile UCAT score, you should get interview offers from schools where ATAR is a hurdle such as WSU and JMP (but be wary of WSU's emphasis on VR).

Sorry, I realise I didn't clarify myself too much. I'm interested in sitting the UCAT in 2020 as I did not sit it this year. So I am just looking at my options for the time being and considering sitting the UCAT in 2020 whilst I start my undergraduate degree. Thus, I am interested in what percentiles I would need to achieve in order to have a chance at Medicine with my 97.6 ATAR.
You only have JCU and JMP you can apply to. JMP requires 90th percentile (2840).

Edit: WSU as well, sorry, 90%ile+ and 700+ VR.

Now that you've made it clearer I summarise the posts above for you:

- 97.6 & 95th %ile would get you an Adelaide interview as school leaver. Once you start uni this option is out unless you study at Adelaide.
- JCU you should have GPA 6.2+ to have a chance, the higher the better. UCAT not needed.
- JMP you need GPA 4.7+ to be eligible, higher does *not* give better chance. UCAT 90%ile for interview based on this year.

- WSU you are eligible with ATAR 97.6, GPA not needed, higher does not help. UCAT around 95%ile with a good VR section score, poor VR will require 98-99%ile. This is based on the section weightings used this year, no guarantee to be the same next year.

- UNSW is out of reach since they combine 50/50 GPA+ATAR and 97.6 makes it uncompetitive even with max GPA.

Specific Question:
So my actual ATAR was way better than expected when converted from an OP. Are you able to advise which Universities I now have a shot at? So far I've had an interview at JCU and that's it. Thanks in advance

Sorry I just had a random question, how did you convert your OP to ATAR, is it just s prediction or is it an official conversion?

Thanks

Sorry I just had a random question, how did you convert your OP to ATAR, is it just s prediction or is it an official conversion?

The Qld Authority QCAA provides the applicant's ATAR (converted from their specific OP) if they submit a request.

"Do I need to apply for my ATAR?

No. The QCAA provides all Tertiary Entrance data (OP/FPs and ATAR) to the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). If you are applying for tertiary entrance in Australia, the (other) tertiary admissions centre can obtain your ATAR directly from QTAC.

If you want to know what your ATAR is you need to apply for an ATAR statement.
"

Do you think an offer at Monash and UNSW is possible with say a bottom 30% interview given a 99.40 (99.95 with SEAS) and 97th UCAT or is there a minimum threshold we must exceed?
Those are very strong scores, but I don’t see much good in you getting an answer to this. You are going to prepare for the interview as best you can and perform your best on the day regardless, right? There’s no point in focusing on just how poorly you can perform to still land an offer.
I heard a strong result in one section doesn’t compensate for a weak interview at UNSW. Is this true?
Yep, it’s true - they changed the way they rank applicants last year.
