I think it has more to do with controlling your nerves and your actual attitude on the day as opposed to going to **** courses or practising your butt off. Simply be calm and think of it as just a small exercise and then you will probably do well, or atleast better than what you think.

yeh- i think it would be better second time round, even that room was like owo, so big, so many people haha i didn't do any **** courses, i just had logic books and puzzles and stuff. i think i'll give it a go next yr and if i do worse than this yrs i will have to be pretty unlucky...as in i think i would be better off picking all b's or something.

i agree with the controlling of nerves. i know for sure that i couldv done heaps better if it wasnt for me being so nervous. but also i think the preparation made a huge difference

non standard med is "generally" harder to get into at most unis because there's less spots to applicant ratio. as such the interview cutoffs are usually higher and its more competitve for spots. not sure if this applies to UNSW though...

Well for the other NSW unis, UNCLE and UWS, it isn't harder for a non-standard. I'd claim it's easier actually since you only need close to a 'credit average' for UNCLE, and a credit average (or UAI of 95) for UWS. THere is no non-standard quota.

For other Unis yes it could be harder of course..but still.

at some places. adelaide only lets you apply non-standard if you're studying within the university.

btw, i sent you a pm.

Maybe I should join the UMAT2010-for-fun gang. (yy) I'm still at a loss as to where my S1 and S3 marks went this year. =/

I don't understand why rural applicants have it easier. Is the quality of teaching less than it is in Sydney or other urban areas? Do you have access to less resources?

And if it can be agreed upon that there are disadvantages to a higher school education when it comes to living in a rural area, why is the required UMAT score also less? If UMAT is an indicator of an individual's ability to be a well-rounded doctor, then why should rural applicants not be up to the same standard as all other applicants?

Or is it simply a political move based on the premise that "rural students will return to rural areas" and thus, admission scores are lowered for the 'greater good'?

You hit the nail right on the head

I will be sitting the UMAT in 2010 aswell...im a newie on this site so im still trying to find my way around

Hi, just wondering if anyone is going to do m******* next year as I need one more person for the group discount. I want to start ASAP so if anyone is interested, it would be great if you could reply quickly or send me a message.

hey, i think this fits in this thread... =/
around what scores/percentiles do you think would be be required to get a pretty good shot at med at monash?(assuming enter and interview are good)

^Monash considers your UMAT score first and then offer you an interview. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think Monash have late round interview or interview after you have receive your score. Anyway, you would roughly need at least 160 for your overall UMAT, which is equivalent to 92-93ish or above percentile.

ohhh okay, thanks. I know that in 2010 there's going to be 44 questions for section 1, 40 for section 2 and 38 for section 3, but what approx. score out of those figures would i need to be looking at around a 160? just so i have a rough figure to work towards.

I also need to add something in relating to ENTER score at Monash. The news below will contradict my statement above where I said Monash will not offer late round interview. Well, they do if you have achieved 99.95 and provided that your UMAT overall score is at lease 50, which is the minimum. Also, to get the desired 180 (sorry arithmetic error when I said 160) or more score, you would aim 60+ in each section. I think your next question would be what to do to prepare for the UMAT. My advice is take a pr3p course (ie. ******** - go on BOS if you want more details) and this will cost around $500. Alternatively, take the cheaper way and self study
S1 - Newspaper, graphs, riddles, (similar to general ability or logical reasoning stuff)
S2 - Read lots of novels and learn new vocab to describe a specific feeling, etc.
Read Emotional Intelligence by David Goleman
S3 - IQ books (this is the easiest section to improve on)

Important Notice - Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
Current Year 12 high achieving students, who have applied for Monash’s Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery, are advised to consider leaving this course as one of their preferences.

so when does registration open for this damned exam?

Check the ACER website.

and what umat (overall) score is considered to be just good enough to pass?

Any score that got you interviews = pass. It obviously depends on how many people sat the test, of which how many intended to use their score for your course, how many spots are available, and the policies of each uni.

Aim for >85th %ile, preferably >90th %ile. Also try get at least a score of 50 in each section, as UQ and Griffith demand this.

EDIT: You're aiming for a UMAT overall of 90? I assume you mean 90th percentile, cos overall 90 = aggregate 270. Out of UTas's 1081 interstate applicants, the top applicant had a UMAT aggregate of 237.

I got into Otago med with an overall UMAT of 34th percentile and a grade average of 94%. But I was rural, and Im sure aussie med schools will require much higher scores
