[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

As far as I know the 50/50/50 rule only applies to non-rural applicants so I wouldn't discount your application just yet. With those scores and a decent degree of rurality you may have a shot at many universities around Australia including the JMP (especially since rural quotas are now sitting at around 1/3 of all medical school admissions).

I understand the 50/50/50 rule applies to all applicants, unfortunately, not just non-rural ones. It's the S1 score requirement that differs between the two. What is the minimum UMAT score required to be eligible for an interview with the JMP? / AskUON / The University of Newcastle, Australia

You miss out by about 2 UMAT points on an interview at the JMP.

However, UQ will offer you a provisional place in medicine with those results if you get above 99 (i.e. welcome to medicine!).

Monash, UNSW, Adelaide, and Curtin will interview you with that UMAT/ATAR combo. I'd probably throw an application WSU's way as well but you'd probably miss out on an interview there.

UTas will probably not offer you a place because of the whole Tasmanian School Leaver quota but you could also put an application in just in case.

Wasn't JMP 60 every year Are you anticipating this year to be 61?

LMG! Looking at this, this makes no mention of rural applicants as far as I can see. As generally the published cutoffs are for non-rural applicants, I would still be a bit hopefuly as a rural applicant. It may very well be the case, but it would seriously make the JMP one of the hardest medical schools to gain entry to as a rural student, in my opinion.

Overall UMAT Score: 180
Section One: 68
Section Two: 60
Section Three: 51
Overall Percentile Rank: 91
Estimated ATAR/GPA: ATAR: 98.16, GPA: 7
Preferred University: JMP, JCU, UWS, UNSW
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: non-standard
State: New Zealand
Rural: no
ATSI: no
GWS: no
Other Bonuses: no

Applying as non-standard in case I don't get in NZ, any estimate of my chances would be much appreciated :)

Disappointed at my results :(
Overall UMAT Score: 173
Section One: 63
Section Two:
48
Section Three:
62
Overall Percentile Rank:
85
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 99.40, or 99.70 or 99.85 (most likely 99.70)
Preferred University: literally anything
Course Type:
Medicine
Application type: school leaver
State: SA, Adelaide
Rural: No
ATSI: No
GWS: No
Other Bonuses: no

I know I have a strong chance of getting first round interviews at Adelaide, but is there any uni out of SA that I have strong chances for? (What kind off an ATAR would I need for Monash with this umat?)

The JMP prospectus clearly differentiates the various ATAR/GPA requirements for rural/non-rural, but again goes on to say that UMAT eligibility is 50/50/50. This also fits with information posted here to MSO for 2017 entry. If I had a section score <50, I would not be holding my breath, but people can obviously go ahead and hope for the best with an application.

Question/s: RIP JMP. I know I'll get interview for UNSW but what are my odds of actually getting in from RA2 NSW with ATAR of 93-96. What other uni do I stand a decent chance in?

As high as you can possibly attain. At the point where your score is likely to vary between 99.4 and 99.85 the relative UMAT score to be considered for interview is rather large (as there are hundreds of applicants around Australia with ATARs between 99.4 and 99.85). I'd probably be on the more cautious side though here. If you get high enough for Monash, you also probably score high enough for UNSW, and you should definitely still apply to JCU just in case.

99.85 will open a lot of doors in terms of provisional entry as well, including for Flinders University and Griffith.

Anywhere want me?

You're rural - so absolutely apply wherever there is a rural entry program. You might want to seek some guidance as to which consider your application to be competitive from the faculties themselves as rural cutoffs can change a lot between years but I actually think your UMAT/GPA combination would at least warrant a look from UNSW, WSU, and Curtin.

If you were an urban applicant I would say that you wouldn't get a look anywhere. However, as a rural one, I'd certainly be poking my head into all the admissions offices (by phone or email of course) for some reassurance as to how competitive you actually are.

Question: What's my chance at a UNSW, WSU and JMP interview?

With a perfect 7 that boosts your overall ATAR/GPA combo a lot, so I'd say with those I'd expect an interview from all three.

All the others with a rural entry program without the 50/50/50 rule you should apply to. This includes Monash, Adelaide, WSU, Curtin and I'd even ask UQ for some advice here. (I have no idea how low their rural cutoff for provisional entry is and haven't seen a great deal of data on this in the last few years.)

Hi guys~ Just wondering, what's the possibility of getting an interview/offer with a UMAT result as below? ( ATAR 99+)

Uni of Newcastle, UWS( apparently there is a difference in cut-off depending on GWS vs non-GWS??) or UNSW? or anywhere else?

Section 1: 52
Section 2: 56
Section 3: 48
Overall:157
62 percentile

Thanks heaps!!

ATAR at UWS and JMP is not taken into account after you reach a certain threshold (which you have met).

Interview offers are given out solely based on UMAT score only after this cutoff is attained. With those scores, assuming you don't have a rural or Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander background, you won't be getting an interview from JMP or WSU.

Overall UMAT Score: 180

Question/s:

I heard last year's UMAT cut-off for Adelaide was 93 but the year before that was 87? Is it possible the requirement would go back down?

Also what is my likelihood for UQ/CSU/La Trobe?

Given my section 1 mark I've applied for JMP med as a backup. How likely am I to get in and is it possible to transfer from med to dent?

Thanks :)

Question: What's my chance at a WSU interview?

Unfortunately, similar to above, WSU takes ATAR as a cutoff only and weights S1 and S2 heavily. I would probably not expect an interview from WSU with that UMAT.
