[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Isn't the EAS bonus still beneficial though? Since my UMAT (84%ile) is still within the cutoffs but not the best, I feel that the boost to my ATAR could help offset that to get me through to an interview, even if my raw ATAR is quite high (hopefully).

84%ile (and under 5o S1) is not within the cutoffs for any non-rural medical program without a 99.9-99.95 ATAR. If you have enough bonus points to bump your ATAR to that, then you might have a decent chance at the universities which weight ATAR in the final selection (UNSW/Monash/Adelaide).

Overall UMAT Score: 163
Section One: 58
Section Two: 46

Application type: School leaver
State: NSW
Rural: Yes
ATSI: No
GWS: No
Other Bonuses: No

I understand chances for JMP interview are virtually zero (due to 50/50/50), however, is there any hope for an interview anywhere else due to my rurality? Especially to UNSW or UWS?

Nah, we got plenty of info about this category from MSO users last year. And have been told numerous times by admissions that this year is running the same as last year did. These scores are definitely extremely competitive (lowest we know of was ATAR 95.0+, UMAT 55 for 2017 entry), and an offer will rely on a good written application.

Excellent - I haven't quite kept pace with the UTas thread (nor with the UTas Faculty of Medicine) so I defer to your judgment here.

As far as I know the 50/50/50 rule only applies to non-rural applicants so I wouldn't discount your application just yet. With those scores and a decent degree of rurality you may have a shot at many universities around Australia including the JMP (especially since rural quotas are now sitting at around 1/3 of all medical school admissions).

Yes you do, but you should also at least apply to the JMP and WSU with those scores as you will also receive an interview there.

Do I have a chance at Monash? I've heard that they may have gotten rid of the 50/50/50 rule. Are there any other universities in Australia that I have a chance at getting an interview? I might try applying interstate.

Yes you do (likely a second round interview if you get one though).

I would also apply to UNSW, WSU, Adelaide, the JMP, and Curtin with those scores.

Welcome to UQ provisional medicine.

You also have a very strong application pretty much everywhere else.

Questions: Obviously missed out this year (needed 175+), section 3 was my let down and I knew that before I got the results. This was my first UMAT so I was impressed in some senses, if S3 was only slightly better it probably would've almost been enough but it was totally my fault, on the day they just weren't making sense in my head. Has anyone been in this position and can someone who did well in S3 point me in the right direction for prep work for next year?

84%ile (and under 5o S1) is not within the cutoffs for any non-rural medical program without a 99.9-99.95 ATAR. If you have enough bonus points to bump your ATAR to that, then you might have a decent chance at the universities which weight ATAR in the final selection (UNSW/Monash/Adelaide).

Not sure how that can be so, there are several people currently in Monash medicine (2016 entry) who attained low 99 ATARs and UMATs as low as in the high 70s (maybe with SEAS but definitely non-rural, and possible second round offers). This info is from people in the course itself (including mtse on ATARNotes). Have I misunderstood something?

Feel free to link this; if this is the case, I stand corrected (noting that in years past Monash has had rather high UMAT cutoffs, well above the 84%ile mark). That said, you might want to check that it's not due to the Victorian school leaver bonus that Monash applies (which presumably you also will be eligible for), and I believe the information is still valid for the other universities in question.

Question/s: I've vaguely inferred from this forum that my S2 score means I won't get an interview offer from Newcastle/WSU? What would my chances be for the other unis?

Welcome (and welcome to all others who are here for the first time).

It's difficult to predict interviews without an ATAR, but with that UMAT and an ATAR of 95+ you should get at least a JMP interview.

Eligible for SEAS/EAS etc.

What are my chances for Monash/UNSW/Adelaide/UWA Med or any other unis

Not quite - the JMP ranks people by section *1* not section 2 so I would expect an interview from there with your strong S1 score.
WSU has a convoluted ranking system for the UMAT which heavily favours S1 and S2 however with those scores I think you're probably safe for an interview there as well.

In terms of other interviews I think you'd qualify for all of them around the country and in the worst case scenario provided you get the 99 ATAR you also have a UQ provisional medicine spot so essentially this post says welcome to medical school!

This is mostly dependent on how much bonus you get from SEAS. If your ATAR is bumped up to a 99.95 you should be getting interviews from all of them; if your bonus is much smaller then you'd miss out on those interviews.

Overall UMAT Score: 192
Section One: 61
Section Two: 70
Section Three: 61
Overall Percentile Rank: 97
Estimated ATAR/GPA: Probably around high 98 - low 99 (pre SA scaling) - my school doesn't give predicted ATARs to students so this is based on a calculator
Preferred University: Adelaide, Monash, UNSW, and now considering UQ lmao
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: school leaver
State: SA
Rural: no
ATSI: no
GWS: no
Other Bonuses: Would get bonus points in SA for English and Maths but doubt they're used for med...

Question: How much of a chance do I have for an interview at Adelaide, Monash and UNSW (top preference is Monash) and of getting provisional entry into UQ?
