i stuffed up in section 1 which i know limits my options. Has it completely ruined any chance for any uni to offer an interview?

I don't think you make it for WSU, even with being GWS, unfortunately. Your options will be limited to JCU and Bond (non- UMAT unis).

Questions: Disappointed I did not achieve minimum 50's for JMP. Would appreciate advice towards what my best options are regarding universities and why so. Also, in general, are my scores competitive or at least usable as a hopeful rural applicant? Thanks.

Question/s: This is for my son, is there any hope? He'd be flexi regarding location.

Without rural status, he'll struggle with UMAT heavy universities. He'd need more like 99.0 ATAR for UWA provisional entry. Curtin might be an option. Maybe also Monash. JCU and Bond would be other options (no UMAT).

Lynne to clarify, Monash won't offer an interview with that. He is probably not going to be happy about that result but there are always other pathways available, they'll just take a little longer.

92-96 makes a huge difference, to be honest. Your rural status will definitely help. WSU and JMP are out. As is UNSW. UAdel is also probably out. Monash is probably out due to likely 50/50/50 rule (though this MAY NOT be the case for rurals so might be worth an application). Your best bet might be to use your rural status to apply for JCU (no UMAT), but you'll want to get your ATAR up more towards the 96 end of that 92-96 range. The more rural you are, the better :)

UTAS might be an option on second thoughts. But the ATAR cut off is definitely 95.0.

Edit by Mana - Have definitely seen rural entry to UNSW with lower scores than this but as above depends on how rural. Adelaide may also consider you again depending on how rural - again have seen lower rural scores get in.

Assuming that you are in second year of uni, you must be finished pretty soon. Are you looking at grad entry Dent as well (USyd/UWA/UMelb)? A GPA of 6.75 will be competitive at least at USyd and at UWA provided you have a good GAMSAT!

Pharmacy is four years, so still a couple of years before grad entry becomes an option for this person. Still a totally viable option though, and probably the more likely one.

I was in pharmacy which is 4 years but withdrew this semester as I decided I really don't want to be a pharmacist. Seeing this now makes me think I should have pushed through but I guess I can retry the UMAT next year.. are there any other undergrad unis that might accept that score considering my ATAR and GPA?

Bond and JCU (no UMAT for either) would be the only ones... ETA: scrap that! I forgot you're after dent!

sorry for all the questions, but even so Flinders University will see my atar as a 99.95, what are your thoughts on my chances for flinders with 99.95 and 72 umat?

As I'm pretty sure I already said, I think your chances for Flinders are good as the cut off last year was 99.85 and UMAT is only 10% of the criteria.

JCU and LaTrobe Dentistry come to mind here. JCU dent, like JCU med, doesn't use UMAT; neither does LaTrobe (at least for standards from memory - this you'll have to check as a nonstandard).

CSU dent will also consider your application.

Question/s: Few questions that I couldn't quite find the answers to:
Does the JMP only take into account Section 1 results, if so would mine be enough to secure an interview?
What are my chances of getting into UNSW?
I haven't chosen Chemistry as a subject for the HSC, will this limit me in my application to certain uni's Australia wide?
Many thanks for the help

1. JMP has a 50/50/50 cut off then ranks all applicants on S1. For non-rural students, this tends to mean those with S1 60+ will get an interview.
2. Good (for interview)
3. Yes. JCU, UTAS, Monash, UAdel, and Curtin require Chem. If you're keen on any of these, you might be able to do a bridging course over summer. Check with the unis in question to see what they would accept.

Okay, so, there have been no requests for information here for the last half an hour, so I think I'm going to risk going to bed. What a surprising day, hey??! Congratulations to everyone who achieved the results they were hoping for, and best of luck to everyone else with whatever happens for you in 2018. I have tomorrow off, so will be able to reply to questions again. Please keep that data coming in :D

Academics and a mediocre UMAT let me down last year and I'll be darned if I can't say i tried this year.

IIRC, 129 for a S1 + S2 combo was the non-rural cut-off for UWS last year, so if nothing changes, you might just be on the money there!

Perhaps similar at UNSW, tbh. Your ATAR/GPA is on the low side but probably just scrapes an interview.

Congrats, best of luck, and sorry you had to wait hours for this :)
