[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Hi everyone, just a quick question.

I'm a bit uncertain at the moment since my overall score of 153 (55th percentile) with two sections under 50 doesn't seem to be too competitive.

However, I do have the fortune of being a rural applicant, so I'm wondering if it's even worth applying with this status?

Can you please re-post using the template provided on page one. Thank you.

Overall UMAT Score: 176
Section One: 66
Section Two: 53
Section Three: 57
Overall Percentile Rank: 88
Estimated ATAR/GPA: around 99.1
Preferred University: UoN, UWS, UNSW
Course Type: JMP, any undergrad medicine
Application type: School leaver
State: NSW
Rural: No
ATSI: No
GWS: No
Other Bonuses: Not that I know of??

So I was really not ready to receive UMAT results yesterday, but what are my chances for (mainly) JMP? I am half looking at other unis but the JMP is what I am really set on.
Thank you and congratulations to everyone else who sat UMAT!

I was also not ready!! Such a weird surprise! Though, if ACER were determined to throw things outta whack by 11 days, I'm glad they did it in this direction and didn't make us wait them out instead! That would have been awful!

Okay, right. Yes, a JMP interview invite is headed your way. You'll miss out on UWS. To scrape a UNWS interview, you'll need to bump your ATAR a little higher. If you can do that, you'd also open provisional Med doorways (UQ, UWA).

Overall UMAT Score: 185
Section One: 59 (grr)
Section Two: 65
Section Three: 61
Overall Percentile Rank: 94
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 98+
Preferred University: anywhere
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: school leaver
State: Victoria
Rural: no
ATSI: no
GWS: no
Other Bonuses: LOTE (for UQ)

Question/s: do I have a chance anywhere for med considering my S1 score being just under the 60+ cut off? TIA

Thank you so much for that! I'm also glad it was earlier rather than later, the waiting game is always horrible...Now for another month of waiting for interviews!!!

The 60+ S1 cut off is only for JMP, so you're ruled out of there. You probably also miss out on UWS. Depending on how much above 98.0 you end up with, you might get UNSW and Monash. Probably UAdel and Curtin. And depending on what your LOTE bonus does to your ATAR, you might also get UQ provisional. Best of luck!

ETA: To be honest, the 60+ for S1 at JMP isn't a hard and fast rule. It fluctuates (very, very slightly) from year to year, so a 59 might still be worth an application if you have a UAC line available for it.

Overall UMAT Score: 153
Section One: 38
Section Two: 49
Section Three: 66
Overall Percentile Rank: 55
Estimated ATAR/GPA: Around low 5-ish, can't find it at the moment.
Preferred University: Any that can take me
Course Type: any undergrad medicine
Application type: Non-Standard
State: NSW
Rural: Yes
ATSI: No
GWS: No
Other Bonuses: Unsure

Given my current status (though I'm not optimistic) should i even bother applying given that crummy score (I've applied for re-marking as well, as I may have incompletely erased around 5-8 questions)

Nah I think this one has a chance at Curtin. We had a few in the high 70s for UMAT and 96s for ATAR.

High 70s and 96s must have been via some assisted pathways. I know first hand of a student with 99.0 & 88%ile who got UWA but no Curtin interview.

Unfortunately, even with your rural status, you won't get an undergrad, non-standard interview or offer anywhere, including JCU (which is a no-UMAT university). Your best bet (assuming your re-mark doesn't change things) might be to complete your degree and go for grad entry med, where your rural status will definitely help. As mentioned above, grad entry med is definitely a great option to keep up your sleeve. Best of luck!

Unlikely (but maybe worth an application) for JMP. No for UWS. Maybe for Curtin and Adelaide, and you'll need to make sure your ATAR is 99.0+ for UWA and UQ. JCU is a bit more of an unknown as it depends on your written application, but definitely worth a shot.

Hi,

Overall Percentile Rank: 61
Estimated ATAR/GPA: achieved 97.00

with an atar of 95.65 and a umat of 98, is it realistically possible to be competitive for a spot (im in my first year of uni and am looking at a GPA of 6.7-6.8)

Hi!
Yes, probably an interview at Monash, and maybe Adelaide, too, given your rural status.

What's the lowest UMAT score required for entry into UQ?
Is 87 sufficient with 99.45 ATAR?

In 2016, a UMAT raw score of 186 was needed for an unbonded position, or 181 for bonded. I can't remember what the 2017 cut-offs were, but UQ publish them, so you could look them up yourself. ETA: those were the scores for 2017, too, with S1 used as a tie break if necessary.

Overall UMAT Score: 182

Section Two: 53
Section Three: 61
Overall Percentile Rank: 91

You will most likely get interviews at UNSW, JMP, UAdel, and Monash.

No, probably not, unfortunately. Unless you're rural, UNSW clearly state that it's extremely difficult to raise your score to the level of a 96.0 ATAR equivalent if you're coming from a point below that. You would have needed a UMAT above 200 (and possibly above 210) to be competitive.

ETA: to clarify for others reading this, the OP created a new thread and the title was to do with UNSW specifically. I moved the comment here to the more appropriate thread, but I realise the UNSW part is now missing :)
