[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Overall UMAT Score: 195
Section One: 64
Section Two: 62
Section Three: 68
Overall Percentile Rank: 98
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 99.15/6.5 (but my WAM is ~86 so far if it'll make a difference, hoping to maintain or increase it this sem)
Preferred University: UNSW, WSU
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: non-standard
State: NSW
Rural: no
ATSI: no
GWS: no
Other Bonuses: no

Question/s: unfortunately, I'm not good at interviews... will I get a UNSW interview and realistically speaking, are my scores competitive enough in the non-standard applicant pool to make up for an average interview?

Thanks for the peace of mind >_> got to focus on midsems now!

Yes, you'll get a UNSW interview. You'll probably miss out on UWS, though. You'd get a JMP one if you're intending to apply there. And might also make the UTAS cut-off for non-standard if you'd be interested in moving to Tas (no interview might be in your favour).

For UNSW, your combo is pretty decent, so you might still be a chance with a less than stellar interview, but it's a very competitive course, as you know, so no promises.

Hey again,

On the UQ website (below), the tie-breaker for S1 has been 61 and 69 for the past few years for unbonded. If I've reached the cut-off score for UMAT (186 in 2017), does the tie-breaker affect me? If so, probably no chance for me...

Or is it only to choose between candidates who have the same UMAT score but different section 1 score?

Pathways and entry requirements

I was reading about this this morning, let's see if I've understood it properly (apologies for my lack of clarity on this, I'm not a school leaver (and haven't been for many, MANY years) so haven't had much exposure to this route).

Once people meet the 99.0 ATAR/OP1 cutoff, they're ranked on their UMAT raw score. If there are multiple applicants on the same score at the cut-off (say, 186) and not all can be offered a CSP place, then their S1 score will be used to differentiate them. If this affected you, and you ended up on the 'wrong side' of the S1 tie breaker, then it wouldn't mean "no chance", it'd just mean you got a BMP offer (assuming you nominate that you'd be happy with one).

Thanks so much! I thought UTAS stopped admitting non-standards but it turns out that was for the 2019 intake - thanks for clearing that up whew. Tasmania's a fantastic place, I'd be stoked to be studying there tbh. Fingers crossed x

Yes! Your rural status helps. I believe UAdel Dent was slightly more competitive than UAdel Med last year (and historically), and I don't know all that much about Dent admissions, but I do think you'll get interviews. I don't think your UMAT bonuses carry through past interviews, so you'll need to make sure you nail it, but being rural is always a bonus. Good luck :D

Feeling a mixture of disappointment and relief. Is there anyway I could *possibly* be accepted for UQ or Monash? :(

Yep, you'll get interviews at both, congratulations! Might be worth a UTAS application, too, if you're keen on a move, as it's not interview dependent and your score last year would have guaranteed you a spot so hopefully it'll do the same this year :)

ETA: Actually, for UWS, your GPA might be touch and go. How much Uni have you completed? How many years?
My GPA should be fine for WSU, I've done one year and as a rural I only need 5.7 :)

Thanks for the advice, I'll look into UTAS

Your UMAT is probably too low for UQ, unfortunately. You'll be more of a chance for interviews at Monash and UNSW. If you can squeeze a 99.8 (or perhaps even 99.75) then Griffiths provisional might be an option for you, too.

Thanks so much LMG!, you have such a wealth of knowledge
I'd be stoked with bonded. I was just scared that I wouldn't be cobsidered since my S1 is only 63, but the cut ofd was 69 for a few years back. Overall score is only 189 too

You are very welcome :)

Your S1 will only come into it if the CSP cut off for this year is 189. I kinda doubt there'll be that big of a jump, but who knows? Regardless, BMP is always there for you, too.

What is the minimum ATAR/OP for JCU MED?

Given you're not rural (also, for anyone reading, if you can please include this information in questions so they can be answered accurately, I had to go back through the threads to find this information for Sara321123), it's around about 99.0/OP1.

No for: UNSW, UWS, JMP.
Ineligible for: Monash, UAdel, and Curtin.
As a non-standard, and with your UMAT, your only options are: Bond and JCU.

ETA: Wait, hang on. You have a WAM? So you've started university? WAM is for university marks, right? Not year 12? But you also say you're a school leaver...

(ETA2: Reply above edited to correct non-standard/school leaver confusion...)

thank you :) If you don't mind me asking another question, do you think that I might be considered for UQ bonded if I get an ATAR of 99.95?

Also, just out of interest, I noticed that medentry said an 85th percentile ranking is around 180+. Since I got 88 with a score of 177, do you think UQ's scaled score cut offs will fall as well this year?

I don't think getting 99.95 will make much difference for UQ. The cut off last year for a bonded provisional spot was 181. It might move a bit, but will it move 4 points? I have no idea. 99.95 would definitely get you Griffiths, though. And USyd.

ETA: Also, I disagree that 85th percentile is around 180+ (despite what ME say). 180 is closer to 90th percentile, and has been for a few years.
