[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

To all that are discouraged, I thought I'd share my UMAT results over the last 3 years and show you that hard work can take you places but also to acknowledge that when you've tried your best there is only so much that can be done. I know I've done all that I can and thats shown in my marks and I'm proud.

2015
Overall UMAT Score:
158
Section One: 53
Section Two: 50
Section Three: 55
Overall Percentile Rank: 62

2016 (note, I did get an offer into the JMP this year)
Overall UMAT Score: 169
Section One: 61
Section Two: 55
Section Three: 53
Overall Percentile Rank: 79

2017
Overall UMAT Score:
170
Section One: 64
Section Two: 51
Section Three: 54
Overall Percentile Rank: 81

I encourage everyone who wants medicine as much as they need to breathe to give this as shot as many times as possible because it's either going to get you where you want or have you know once and for all that you've exhausted all options.

Overall UMAT Score: 188
Section One: 70
Section Two: 49
Section Three: 68
Overall Percentile Rank: 95
Estimated ATAR/GPA: Atar = 98.15, GPA = 6.25
Preferred University: Any
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: Non-standard
State: NSW
Rural: No
ATSI: No
GWS: No
Other Bonuses: No

Question/s: JMP has been ruled out, do I have a chance for anywhere else?

Probably not, unfortunately. You'll miss the UWS cut-off, your S2 rules you out for UTAS and Curtin. Your GPA (given you're non-rural) is probably too low for JCU. Bond might be your only option.

You might just make the UNSW interview cut-off.

Also, don't forget there is always grad entry. Best of luck.

You are very welcome :)

Your S1 will only come into it if the CSP cut off for this year is 189. I kinda doubt there'll be that big of a jump, but who knows? Regardless, BMP is always there for you, too.

You're a living legend LMG! I better use that stress to get an ATAR of 99+

That depends highly on what your GPA is in dentistry. If your combined GPA plus ATAR brings your ATAR equivalent to 99.95 then you will likely get an interview from UNSW - otherwise, you're out of luck. That said, you probably chose the right career anyway according to quite a few of our dentists and doctors/medical students here (myself included).
Would it be correct to assume that they take my overall GPA from 1st and 2nd year? Or would they just take the most recent year?
My current overall GPA including both years would be ~6.1?
Just from this year, so far would by 7.0?
Thank you!

There is something i dont understand if you dont mind me asking? After we start uni, are we allowed to keep doing the umat to get into MED or do we have to take GAMSAT? This is so confusing >_<

You can keep doing UMAT to apply to undergraduate universities that offer non-standard spots (this year: UTAS, UWS, Curtin, UNSW, JMP). Bond and JCU also take non-standard applicants who have started a uni degree. Once you've completed your degree, the UMAT option for the above unis is still an option, but so is the GAMSAT route to grad entry.

ETA: there are multiple 'non-standard entry' threads here at MSO if you wish to discuss this further as it's off-topic for this thread.

My ATAR is looking to be around 97 or 98. I did LOTE and Maths C equivalent, so does this mean that my 4 points are added to my ATAR for UQ? So it becomes over 99? Seems too good to be true, is that right?

It is not technically but practically true. UQ adds these 2 or 4 points to your Rank which as we know closely resembles ATAR's rounded number. For example 4 points added to 95.8 gives Rank 99 not ATAR 99.80

Mana has also explained SATAC's 5 bonus points don't work this way though. It's added to your uni aggregate which does not correlate linearly with ATAR. Rule of thumb is +3 for 95, +2 for 97, +0.5 for 99.

ETA: Thank you, A1!! I did warn gnaf that my knowledge on this matter was based only on my google-fu abilities :D - LMG!

Solid google-fu skills LMG!

Thanks so much A1! What do you mean by SATAC's 5 bonus points? I thought only UQ had bonus points for certain subjects?

Idk if you are eligible for any from SATAC, they gives 5 bonus points to school or financial-disadvantaged applicants. Search for SATAC UES.

Apparently your 'state' is applicable. I've just inquired with a third party and they said yes, if you're an SA local and no, probably not, if you're not. Presumably, this is due to the UMAT bonus that is applied to locals in the initial stages (as is the case in Med), but that's a guess on my part at this stage! :)

Ah sorry, I meant to say non-applicable because I will be applying as an international student! Do you think any hopes of the dentistry interview in that case then please?

Ahhh, unfortunately I have no idea re. International applicants. I'll have to hand this one over to one of the other Mods. Mana, A1... any help? Even B2?

Probably not, but might be worth an application, just in case, for JMP. Same for UWS based on your GWS status. And you're probably just under the cut off for a UNSW interview invite, unfortunately. UAdel and Curtin might give you interviews. Also, Bond (full fee, no UMAT).

A bit off topic, but what ATAR is needed for rural interstate entry into Griffith, JCU, Adelaide, Flinders and Monash? UMAT 61/46/70. (177 i.e. 88th%tile).
Also I called UTAS and the guy I spoke too said the main UMAT requirement is 150 overall, and they don't focus on any particular section. Not sure if he was being completely honest, you experienced people probably have a better idea than me about it.

If you can get an ATAR of 99.0+, then yes, for UNSW. You'll get a JMP interview, but probably just miss for UWS.
