[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

To be honest, your score is good enough that you would actually have a reasonable chance of a place there. However, I'd also say that you'll likely have multiple offers all around the country and as a result Tasmania may not necessarily be your first preference.
Right, im looking at UTAS as like a sort of backup considering there is no interview and my atar will certainly be above 95. Just curious about the level of certainty of the offer. What was the data like from last year for interstate candidates?

On that note, how do you prove through EAS that you have suffered academic disadvantage? I had serious family illness and death around this time last year and am wondering if I would be applicable for EAS. However my grades didn't really change throughout this period so I'm not sure if I could quite prove it hahah... I think my ATAR will be above 99 but I could get it above 99.9 with EAS.

To be honest I've never had to apply to EAS myself. Furthermore it's actually pretty difficult to prove the degree of disadvantage you would get from a serious event; feasibly I think they would just look at the family illness/death, see what bonus marks are given for that kind of disadvantage, and add those marks to your university aggreggate.

Overall UMAT Score: 200
Section One: 61
Section Two: 60
Section Three: 79
Overall Percentile Rank: 99
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 99.80
Preferred University: Monash
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: School Leaver
State: Victoria
Rural:
No
ATSI: No
GWS: No
Other Bonuses: No

Question/s:
Was pretty keen to remain in vic but after reading around I've been reconsidering. Haven't done too much research on the systems outside vic yet so would appreciate any sort of advice there (criteria, pros/cons, etc.) particularly for UNSW/UWS/JMS against Monash.

Okay, thank you regardless :) do you think it would be worth applying to EAS even if it only makes a very minor difference?

Feel free to peruse the offers thread yourself, however, from the collated information in the first post at UTAS MBBS: 2018 Entry Information you would have received an offer with a 98-99th percentile UMAT (which you have).

The problem of course is that assuming you only have 5-10 spots for interstate year 12 leavers that this could be a huge variation - it could be that 5 people interstate with their 100%ile immediately accept, or that they go through 5 people, or 10, or 20, etc. (Knowing how UTas has gone in years past the number is more like maybe hundred or so re: declining, not 5, ha).

Yes - every possible advantage counts, and the worst case scenario you're in the same position as if you didn't apply for it.

Why have you been reconsidering, for the record?

pi can probably convince you to come back to Monash. He loved it so much he decided to spend an extra year in medical school there.

I think there is a great deal of information on the forum as to what people's experiences of various universities have been so far. I would encourage you to have a read of some of them.

I'm a rural applicant (RRA2)
Umat:
Overall 197
1: 66
2: 67
3: 64
Percentile: 98th

No predicted ATAR as I'm non standard, GPA is 6.0

Universities: UoN/UNE OR WSU

Congratulations! That is a very good achievement. What is your first preference for uni?

Thanks for the reply :) I was planning to do biomed at melb/monash if monash didn't take me, but then I thought that i wouldn't particularly enjoy the GAMSAT route too much.

Well it certainly says something good if someone spent an extra year in Monash! I'll definitely have a read around the forum.

pi has written a crazy comprehensive guide to Monash medicine at pi's review of Monash Med units if you want an idea.

You'll definitely get a JMP interview. WSU may depend on how far through your degree you are. If you're only in first year, you'll need to bump your GPA ever so slightly to 6.1+. If you're further through than that, you'll be fine. Congrats :D

Sorry LMG, no idea why this appeared here I thought I commented on a thread for rural students but my alerts says it no longer exists?? Whoops, anyway you already answered my questions before so thank you! (WSU website says that as a rural student I only need a 5.7 GPA, but I'm working to bump it up this semester anyway. Can't hurt!)

I always forget about the rural-based GPA reduction for UWS (as well as UMAT). Thanks for the timely reminder. Sorry for answering you twice, usernames have started to blur together a bit! Good luck with the GPA, I'm a non-standard applicant too; fun times, hey?!

Yup I decided to take on the BMedSc(Hons) honours year last year too :)

Question/s: what is my chance of getting any interviews from any med schools in Australia?

Your possible bets for interview are probably Monash, UNSW, UAdel, Bond, and Curtin. You may also scrape in for provisional Med at UWA (concentrate on getting the highest ATAR you can).

You're unlikely to get interviews/offers at JMP, UWS, Griffiths, Flinders, USyd, UTAS, UQ, or UMelb. Though a couple of these could open up if you can get your ATAR into the high 99+ range.

JCU is always dependent on your written application.

Question/s: Do I have a chance for JMP? (or anywhere else?)

I have posted here before, but I have another question so here are my scores again:
My overall raw: 173 Percentile: 85
Predicted atar: 99.70 or 99.85

I did not meet the 50/50/50 rule but I do not believe that is relevant for Monash anymore.

Is there any chance for an interview at Monash unviersity with a 99.70/99.85 or is my UMAT just too low to be carried up? Apparently I have a chance at UNSW with a 99.70 and 173 so I was wondering if this could also apply to Monash.

Thanks.

There is some debate as to whether the 50/50/50 applies to Monash. Do you have a source for your understanding that it is not relevant?

The current web-site says "yes". Additional requirements

I think you'll most likely just miss out on a JMP spot however if the section 1 cutoff drops by 1 point (cutoff was 60-61 last year) then you might get an interview (and then the weighting is 100% on the interview).

Without knowing your ATAR I wouldn't be able to tell if you would be good for UNSW (but my suspicion is likely not with that GPA).

There is always the possibility of JCU medicine as a non-standard applicant but outside of cutoffs dropping for JMP or a strong application for JCU I would say your chances this year are going to be pretty slim, sorry.
