[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

Hey guys this might be random but does anyone possibly know what the atar umat cutoff for WA med under the high achievers pathway? I will be an interstate applicant so i only qualify through this pathway.

Overall UMAT Score: 179
Section One: 59
Section Two: 70
Section Three: 50
Overall Percentile Rank: 90%
Estimated ATAR/GPA: ~98.5
Preferred University: Monash, UNSW, JMP
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: School leaver
State: Victoria
Rural: No
ATSI: No
GWS: No
Other Bonuses: No

Hey guys, do you reckon these scores would be enough to land a place at Monash, provided an alright interview? I know the section 3 score is a bit low, so I'm mainly wondering whether a 98.5 is competitive enough or if I really need to be striving for 99. Thanks!

Questions: What are my chances?

Also, note that for UQ your score counts as 181, because they only take the sum of the section scores, not the overall score given by acer

An alright interview is a vague measurement. Your interview score is ranked against the others so if most also do alright or better you'd be near bottom percentile, and vice versa.

For UNSW 98.5/90%ile would struggle to get an interview and if getting one need a near-top interview score to get an offer. Monash is easier on Vic students and success rate is higher than UNSW, I think you will get a Monash interview but need 70-80%ile interview to be successful.

We have another person here reporting to this thread that received a UNSW interview last year, despite not having completed the HSC, so it's definitely possible. However, this person has a Master degree and a GPA of 7.0, so I would be concerned that your UMAT/GPA combo is too low, despite your rurality. It may be worth a call to UNSW to clarify, or even go back a few pages in this thread to find the person I've referred to above and see what advice they've received, if they're happy to share.

In all honesty, and coming from someone who has had a lower GPA - you may want to reevaluate whether you are suited to the high academic requirements for studying medicine. It probably isn't what you want to hear, but at the very least your aspirations should be in line with your achievement in a realistic sense.

Question/s: Hi there guys. I am just asking to see if there is any chance I will get an interview at any University. Even though I said Monash I am still realistically looking at Tasmania and James Cook. Thanks for any help in advance.

Hello! Unfortunately, your UMAT is likely too low for a Monash interview offer. Given you don't have a rural background, and you're predicting your ATAR to be less than 99.0, you will probably struggle to get an interview at all Med universities. JCU (James Cook) may be your saving grace. They will consider you if your written application is excellent, so make sure you get this proof read etc, before you send it off.

Unfortunately, your UMAT is nowhere near the UTAS requirements on a couple of fronts (you'd need closer to 200 for a raw score, and a S2 score of 60+).

ETA: Depending on finances, you could also consider Bond.

As a school leaver not from Tasmania, UTas won't consider your application with that UMAT.

JCU will be highly dependent on what you write on the application.

I don't think you will get any other med interviews this year with that UMAT score, unfortunately.

Question/s: Chances of getting interview for WSU and UNSW? A bit worried about wsu because I didn't get s1 + s2 > 128. Also how well do I need to do in their interviews? And how important are the questions for the UNSW application?

I'm a rural student. Is there any use of trying to get a EAS for family illness in year 11? Or is it pointless as I'm already getting bonus marks/special entry pathways for being rural. Thanks.

I'm interstate for Tasmania, what are my chances for an offer at UTAS with S2 of 70 and overall of 200? My atar will be over 95 for sure.

From what A1 seems to have updated the formula was s1+2 > 120 which you do have (the other formula was s1 + s2 + 10% of s3 over 128).

You'll get an interview for UNSW with that ATAR and probably have a small amount of wiggle room in the interview - obviously you will still need to score well as it's a whole 1/3 of the weighting.

WSU on the other hand won't have any advantages with your ATAR (it's a cutoff only) and the interview is rather heavily weighted, so in terms of that one you won't have too large an advantage so you will need to perform well in that. I would say I'd be surprised if they didn't interview you though.

Re: the questions for the UNSW application - I would take a photocopy of them before you send them. The reason for this is that the questions are actually used to help the interviewers talk to you, so you should at least come prepared ready to explain the things you put down on the application form. However, the interview is not marked on what you put down on the application, only on what you say (though it's weird if your answers are incongruent with what you put on the application form).

Bonus marks to your ATAR will make you more competitive in general while being rural means that you have to be less competitive marks and/or UMAT wise than an urban applicant. Essentially both of these things can work in your favour so certainly pursue them.

To be honest, your score is good enough that you would actually have a reasonable chance of a place there. However, I'd also say that you'll likely have multiple offers all around the country and as a result Tasmania may not necessarily be your first preference.

On that note, how do you prove through EAS that you have suffered academic disadvantage? I had serious family illness and death around this time last year and am wondering if I would be applicable for EAS. However my grades didn't really change throughout this period so I'm not sure if I could quite prove it hahah... I think my ATAR will be above 99 but I could get it above 99.9 with EAS.
