[Undergrad] UMAT 2017 Results Discussion

I have posted here before, but I have another question so here are my scores again:
My overall raw: 173 Percentile: 85
Predicted atar: 99.70 or 99.85

I did not meet the 50/50/50 rule but I do not believe that is relevant for Monash anymore.

Is there any chance for an interview at Monash unviersity with a 99.70/99.85 or is my UMAT just too low to be carried up? Apparently I have a chance at UNSW with a 99.70 and 173 so I was wondering if this could also apply to Monash.

Thanks.

Monash hasn't released cutoffs for a while so all we have to go on is the scores in the forums.I have noticed that UNSW and Monash often have rather similar ballpark cutoffs for interview for the purposes of predicting whether you would get one or not.

Monash Med Offers 2017 for the offers thread from last year from Monash. While you might make it for interview there (might just squeeze in... or miss out) you would have to absolutely smash the interview there to get a place.

As far as I know the 50-50-50 rule is still in play for Monash.

The Monash guide states this rule is in play for "all applicants" twice. From this, do you think it also includes rural applicants? I would assume yes, but just wondering what your opinion is.

Last year there was nothing in print and as shown in the Criteria table on two occasions a Monash Admissions officer said the 50/50 rule no longer applied. This year it's in print again to settle any confusion.

Other than that, any scores with a chance for interview at UNSW will have more than a chance at Monash *if you are a Vic student*. If non-Vic, no chance (unless Monash will heed Adelaide's advice about being unconstitutional and change).

I would think it applies, because it says 'all applicants' and there's nothing anywhere to say that rural students are exempt- mind you, if they can't fill the rural quota with 50+'s (which I'm sure they will anyway), do you think they would consider lower scores?
(I've got above 50 for each section though so it's all good :D )

From what A1 seems to have updated the formula was s1+2 > 120 which you do have (the other formula was s1 + s2 + 10% of s3 over 128).

You'll get an interview for UNSW with that ATAR and probably have a small amount of wiggle room in the interview - obviously you will still need to score well as it's a whole 1/3 of the weighting.

WSU on the other hand won't have any advantages with your ATAR (it's a cutoff only) and the interview is rather heavily weighted, so in terms of that one you won't have too large an advantage so you will need to perform well in that. I would say I'd be surprised if they didn't interview you though.

Re: the questions for the UNSW application - I would take a photocopy of them before you send them. The reason for this is that the questions are actually used to help the interviewers talk to you, so you should at least come prepared ready to explain the things you put down on the application form. However, the interview is not marked on what you put down on the application, only on what you say (though it's weird if your answers are incongruent with what you put on the application form).

Ahh, yep. Thank you so much! How much slack do I get for living in GWS when applying for WSU? Is it just for atar cut off?

Apart from lower ATAR the S1+S2 cutoff for getting interview is apparently around 120 instead of 128 for non-GWS.

I honestly can't imagine Monash would have any issues whatsoever filling their Med spots with people who got 50/50/50 as a minimum, so I doubt they'd need to lower it. I mean, who knows what goes on in practice, but I'd be very surprised...

Curtin divided its quota of 60 places into several subquotas. Other than Standard the Rural/Equity/ATSI subquotas are the assisted pathways I meant.

For the 25 Standard places Curtin interviewed about 75 applicants (they stated 3 to 1 ratio). Do you really think that 75 interview spots were enough to extend invites down to all applicants with high 70s UMAT 96 ATAR no assistance? The only way possible would be the high 70s UMAT must have had like 99.90+ to compensate, or the 96 ATAR had close to top UMAT.

I can say that I myself got 98.7 ATAR and 83 UMAT and I had no assisted pathways.

I should add that Curtin intended to hand out 180 interviews but ended up interviewing 240 applicants. This is information direct from the friendly admin at Curtin :)

I'm fairly certain your friend must have failed to achieve 50 in one section.

Yeah only a one year difference, but one less year of study/paying for accommodation interstate would be nice!

Just realised I remember you from the debacle that was UTAS admissions 2017! Congrats on the UMAT score bump! Here's hoping they don't pull a swifty on us this year :D

Haha thanks LMG! Congrats on your fantastic score too, fingers crossed we've both done enough :)

Overall UMAT Score:
180
Section One: 61
Section Two: 77
Section Three: 42
Overall Percentile Rank: 91
Estimated ATAR/GPA: 97 or above
Preferred University: UQ, Monash, Griffith, UNSW, UWS, JCU (in that order)
Course Type: Medicine
Application type: School Leaver
State: NSW
Rural: Yes
ATSI: No
GWS: No
Other Bonuses: Medical condition

Questions:
I know offers are very unlikely with my scores so I'm kind of banking on the Rural Access Scheme to increase my chances. Does anyone know if the UMAT 50-50-50 rule applies at UQ?

I'm not sure how low your ATAR can be for rural UQ, and as you've just said 97< it's a bit hard to say. Do you mean 97 or less? Or less than 97? Or something else? Your UMAT should be okay for rural UQ, and I don't believe there is the 50/50/50 rule. Monash will be out for you as the 50/50/50 rule is in play there (likely including for rurals). I have no idea re. rural ATAR for Griffiths. You should get UNSW and UWS interviews. JCU will depend on your written application.

Thank you!
I meant a minimum projected ATAR of 97 (>97) so hopefully it shouldn't be too low for Rural acceptance.

Thanks for your time

I have some confirmation regarding WSU's selection process. I have been in contact with the uni through email and via phone, and they have said that receiving an interview is based off UMAT and ATAR. However, for receiving offers, the only criteria is the interview and UMAT is used as a tiebreaker.

Question: Do I have a chance for any of the listed universities with my UMAT score? I know they generally look for 180 however I was hoping I can apply through a rural access scheme?
