UMelb UMelb Dentistry: Entry Questions and Discussion

if i apply mid-year entry into bachelor of science will this affect my chances to get into med or dent at the university of melbourne? since i will be starting in july instead of the beginning of the year like others. is there any bias on mid year entry when i later finish my degree and apply for dent/med.
i have already completed first semester at another university.

No it doesn't make any difference. If you finish mid year, then your GPA will be finalised a bit earlier than other applicants, but it has no effect on whether you get an offer or not.

Hello, I have heard that the University of Melbourne is very hard to get into as an international student from Canada. Would anyone who has been accepted to Melbourne dentistry be willing to post their GPA and DAT score?

My weighted GPA is 3.54 and my DAT score is 25AA. Do you guys think these results are competitive enough to apply with?

Thanks!

They have pre-entry, so you can get a spot in dentistry, providing you maintain the WAM they want from you :)
if you get a 99.85 you need to keep a WAM of 80%+ if you get a 99.90 you dont have a minimum wam :) (because of chancellors scholars program)
nani what is this preentry thing now? Could you provide a link to some info about it? I've only heard of the 99.0+ FFP spots, as well as the 99.90 chancellors but nothing in between.

Not that many people get 99.85, usually only around 15 applicants are eligible for offers.
Not counting 99.95s & .90s, Australiawide around 150 students get 99.85 (Vic alone is 35ish). However those with 99.85 interested in Med/Dent most would choose 6-year Griffith Med before 7-year & WAM 80+ UMelb Dent.

I'm considering UMelb Dent as there are an unlimited number of spots as long as you get 99.9. The problem I have is I'd rather do Griffith Med but I may miss out due to delayed results.

I'm optimistic that by the time QTAC/Griffith receives your ATAR, if 99.90 they should have a spot for you. If you know when they will receive your ATAR, keep calling them to say you should qualify for an offer.

Also since you mentioned 99.90, wouldn't you be interested in UMelb Med instead of Dent?

I did consider UMelb Med as a last resort due to the interview at the end of the third year. I've read that most people pass with the exception of 1-2 people per year but the risk is still present. Hence why I'd prefer UMelb Dent or Griffith Med.
On that note do you know how difficult it would be to maintain the 80% WAM required?

It depends. For some people and some subjects such as physiology, it's not that hard to achieve 80 if you put in the effort. Just be strategic and ask for advice for senior year students before you choose your subjects.

What I meant when I said "usually only around 15 applicants are eligible for an offer" was that about 15 of applicants who apply for the course get an offer. In other words, UMelb sends out around 15 offers every year. But yeah, most of those with 99.85 ATAR and interested in Med would choose Griffith Med (no interview/UCAT) and those interested in Dent would choose Latrobe (also no interview/UCAT). Probably only people who really want to stay in Melbourne or those who only interested dent but don't meeting the biology prerequisite would choose Umelb.

Hey there, I am in a similar situation with delayed results. This page explains it :) I am from New Zealand and my exam results won't be available in time for the mid-January offer round.
Although they don't hold spots for later offer rounds, you are well above the cutoff and are in the best position to receive a top-up offer. Typically lots of people decline for a home state offer so I think you can be quite confident in receiving a late round offer from Griffith. Hopefully they don't give you the offer too late (pretty sure they have given such offers even after the semester has started) since you'd have to move from NZ. But given you're well above the cutoff, your offer will be given higher priority to those people who are just below the cutoff and waiting for a top-up.

Good luck!

I think WAM 80 is tough, especially UMelb is a 80+ HD uni. Which means either their marking or setting exams is tougher than the 85+ HD unis (otherwise they'd have a disproportionate number of students achieving HDs).

I was a 99.80 student, my undergrad GPA at UWA (also a 80+ HD uni) was around 6.50 so roughly half the units above 80 and half in the 70-79 Distinction range. My WAM would have been below 80.

Ah I see, I guess I'll have to just wait it out and see what happens with the other unis.

Apparently Melbourne had first round offers on the 14th when they didn't have my results. What are the chances they would still have spots left on the second round offer on the 1st of Feb?

When you refer to only 15 people a year get an offer, is this a strict limit?
Lets say I have a 99.95 ATAR but they only have my results in time for second rounds, and they've already sent out 15 offers would I still be eligible for an offer on the 1st of February?
