UNSW UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

Considering that people with higher ATARs than me didn't get in, I'm not sure how I managed to get an invite in the first place. If it does happen to be that it is a mistake from UNSW, then even attending the interview will be a waste of my time as it's almost impossible to compensate a 98.70 with a 97th UCAT and a hypothetically stellar interview as said in their statement:

"Scores are not averaged, which means that a high score in one of the three components will not compensate for a low score in another. As previously advised we have now set the cut-off scores required to gain a place in the program provided you rank high in the interview component as well."

I'd still go to the interview. You gotta be in it to win it! And some may have already deferred for this year 🤔

I don't think it's possible to compete when the field isn't level as A1 said:

"the mistake (if it is one) is on Unsw, but when they put the three scores into final calculations the 98.7 could mean NO way to get to the top third for an offer."

Assuming UNSW doesn’t notice (for a second time, when calculating offers) that they interviewed a candidate below the ATAR cutoff of 99.25 (which seems highly unlikely in itself), the fact that Auk’s ATAR will be the very lowest of all non-rural candidates that are interviewed will likely mean even with the top interview score out of all applicants, it will still not be enough to land a place offer. Doesn’t seem like a worthwhile investment to me - but Auk should see what UNSW has to say before making any decisions.

We were told the same. Despite being rural RRMA5 which counts for something all EAS submissions made were not accepted by UNSW. Despite that, an interview and subsequent bonded place was offered with the most deplorable UCAT and ATAR combination🙈. 57%ile & 95.05 so don't dismiss an interview offer...you might just nail it. 😁

I do understand what you’re saying, but the two cases aren’t comparable due to one being part of the rural pool and the other not.

The difference between the two cases is that one interview invite was presumably a mistake (I.e. with Auk’s ATAR he is completely ineligible due to the 99.25 cutoff) whereas in your case the interview invite was not a mistake, and rural candidates (particularly those of RRMA5 and higher status) can and do land place offers with similar score combinations (and lower) every year.

Where are you getting the 99.25 cutoff from?

Just curious if you ever heard anything back from them?

Do you guys know if UNSW send out rejections??
Hey! From what I’ve heard UNSW send out rejection emails to people who don’t meet UCAT thresholds before interviews but in regard to offers I found this...
Last year my friend who got rejected didn't get a rejection email from UNSW. She logged into UAC and saw that no offers were made. Might change this year, but she also rung UNSW to confirm. Good luck!
All the best!

Has anyone who's expecting UNSW round 2 just not received any correspondence from UAC at all?
Non-standard here and UNSW was my only preference on the list.
Was either expecting an offer email or "no offers made this round" email from UAC, but no emails at all from them yet.

If you put a different med school as your first UAC pref (e.g. I put Newcastle first), and you get that first pref offer, but you also would've been offered a UNSW med spot, but you put UNSW med second, does UNSW call you to let you know that you would have received an offer? Because I saw someone on the mso 2020 Offers Data thread saying they put UNSW as a lower preference but UNSW called them to let them know they would've gotten an offer. however they were rural, so just wondering if they do that for everyone?

It's first time we heard of and it was nice of UNSW to do that. But we don't know if they also do for non-rurals.

Imagine WSU/JMP doing the same. Say someone got UNSW bonded, then WSU rang to say hey you would have got unbonded from WSU would you like to take it instead.

Last year, there was one kid who got a special call from WSU med, even though he absolutely trashed his interview (I think it was a special exception due to his insane/inhuman ATAR results)

Isn’t 99.95 the highest ATAR? How was his result “insane/inhuman”?

jessica20 A1 I got a first round offer for UON on the 10/01 as it was my first preference, and UNSW was my second. I missed a phone call on Friday morning (17/01) from 'Courtney' at UNSW on a 'Port Macquarie' phone number. When I called back later, she asked something along the lines of did I already have other medicine offers or if I was likely to accept a place at UNSW. When I told her I had a home state offer she didn't say anything else. I got an offer for UNSW Port Macquarie today in second round UAC offers (I forgot I had shuffled my preferences after the first round when I didn't have all my offers - but quickly rejected it today so the next person in line can have my offer). I am a rural applicant also, so I hope that helps with the phone call question :).
