UNSW UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

1. Given that the median for ATAR in the past for UNSW med has been 99.7 and I only got a 98.70 I would probably rank in the lower half of the distribution of ATAR. Is it still worth attending my interview...

You must have rural or EAS bonuses, yes? If the former, your ATAR/UCAT combo would be well above the average rural applicant and you’ll be in a good position for an offer. If the latter, your ATAR isn’t really 98.7 for the purposes of admissions.

Uh... nope. Not sure how I even got an invite...
From my understanding UNSW have straight up stated you’re ineligible with an ATAR below 99.25 as a non-rural applicant, so that doesn’t really make any sense.

Well... Now I'm confused.... ;-;
Auk contact UNSW asap and ask before you book flights; because if you are ineligable for an offer and it was an accident then going to the interview would be useless.

I could be wrong but I think some disadvantages are automatically added, e.g. attending a disadvantaged school or living in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area
That's impossible... I don't live anywhere that is considered disadvantaged, and furthermore I could say that I went to a rich private school this year...

SO I'm hella confused rn

Did you have a lower preference selection for a non medicine course? If so, perhaps they applied subject points for that other preference and mistakenly carried it over to your ATAR score for your medicine preference.

No I didn't all my applications to UAC were for medical schools, it's impossible to see how any of my subject points could have carried over. At this point I'm just hoping that UNSW don't pull smoke over my eyes and say that I was "misinformed" and refuse to reimburse me for airfare

Since when was it UNSW's policy to reimburse airfares for anyone? Is this because you reckon your invite might be a mistake and so u wanna email them to ask whether it is a mistake in the case that you weren't supposed to get one in the first place?

If they have misinformed an applicant over their ability to have an interview (when they actually weren't eligible for one, so it will be a useless interview); should unsw be reasonable, they will realise their mistake and reimburse, but that might not happen. So best worth a shot.

Ok, can't be that then. I can't see how they would ever consider blaming you for the invite Auk. They determine the invites. But call them for peace of mind.

Considering that people with higher ATARs than me didn't get in, I'm not sure how I managed to get an invite in the first place. If it does happen to be that it is a mistake from UNSW, then even attending the interview will be a waste of my time as it's almost impossible to compensate a 98.70 with a 97th UCAT and a hypothetically stellar interview as said in their statement:

"Scores are not averaged, which means that a high score in one of the three components will not compensate for a low score in another. As previously advised we have now set the cut-off scores required to gain a place in the program provided you rank high in the interview component as well."

I will be calling, an email has already been sent
