UNSW UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

Hello,
Any advice on what I should use the concluding statement space for in the online UNSW application?

A really dank meme that will give the markers a sensible chuckle
Or you could write something brief that conveys your readiness and willingness to study medicine and become a doctor -- try to frame it so that you're bursting with potential, and that the realisation of that potential is now contingent just on the approval of the marker.

As much as I would love to add in a dank meme, I'll follow the latter advice haha. Thanks!

Just realised UNSW changed their SEAS scheme. So there's more criteria to ge the extra academic points what are ur guys' thoughts on how this would impact cut offs? Because ik quite a few guys who got the EAS points on one of the criteria rather than all that is now required

Hey just wondering, UNSW said that for their med course,
"Assumed knowledge: English Standard. English as a Second Language and Fundamentals of English are not considered suitable preparation."

Is it really so? How come I know a few people who did EAL/D (the new ESL course) as their English subject and still managed to get in? I'm kind of worried my English course will drag me down in the race now

It’s assumed knowledge, not a pre-requisite. So my understanding is they won’t exclude you on the basis of your level of English study, but state that EAL/D isn’t necessarily the level of English that will be useful and your English skills should be in advance of this (which your interview would help inform them of).

PhEEWW I was actually scared for a short minute!! Thanks a lot and guess it's time to start prepping for interviews

Hi, I have heard that you can preference being considered for a bonded place, but can't find it in the MAP application. Has this been removed or have I somehow missed it?

there's no option to be considered for a bonded place in the MAP application or on UAC:
"Unbonded places are offered to the top-ranking students at the final stage until the allocation is exhausted. Bonded places are then offered until all places have been filled."

Does anyone know when the interview invites for rural students are coming out this year? I'm guessing early november?

(mod note: offer changed to interview invite)

Does anyone know if UNSW look at your ATAR and GPA before , or just UCAT and will calculate the ATAR/GPA weighting after the interview meaning that potentially your interview was a waste of time if you don't make the ATAR/GPA academic rank (even if you do really well in the interview)?

I know it makes sense from the uni's perspective to do the interviews first, just wanting clarification as I couldn't find it in the thread, thank you!

For general applicants, I believe that they do take into account ATAR for interview invites. Even if this wasn't the case, they give offers based on all three components equally (UCAT, interview, ATAR/GPA), so yes, if your ATAR/GPA is not sufficiently high you won't get an offer.

Ahh ok, because I received an interview invite today (I’m rural though) and my GPA is 6.4 and I can’t quite recall my atar as I graduated many years ago and was wondering if I have made the ATAR/GPA rank considering I have received the interview invite, or whether I could potentially be told after the interview sorry you actually didn't make the rank regardless of how your interview went

Ah, I didn't realise you were rural - that's probably a bit different. Looking on their website, it says the lowest ATAR for rural entry was 91.05. I imagine 6.4 converts to a score higher than that, but maybe not (also I believe they calculate your ranking using both ATAR and GPA). Since rural applicants who are school leavers also got offers, they might not have even checked ATAR/GPA at this stage, so I would say contact UNSW if you want to be certain.

Yeah that makes sense, they were pretty straight up with this on the rural entry scheme website but I assumed that they would check that for non-school leavers to prevent wasting their own time (admissions team) interviewing students with an ATAR that will never suffice.

"Please note: If an applicant has an ATAR or equivalent of less than 82.00, their tertiary results can never be sufficient to raise their academic results to the equivalent of the minimum ATAR of 91.00 required for consideration for entry."

That's for your reply, I shall contact them in the next few days.

Hi,
Does anyone know (or wants to predict) what would be the lowest UCAT / ATAR to get UNSW interview invite for high school leaver from NSW (no EAS, etc)
Would last yrs cut offs around 91 UCAT and 99.25 ATAR be the same this year?
