UNSW UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

Yes, at the moment I'm quite adamant on staying in Sydney actually for personal reasons. I'm planning to start med science next year whilst studying for the UCAT just in case. Is it possible to apply again with my ATAR in this way?
You can apply as a non-standard to WSU and UNSW (as well as a few universities outside of Sydney). UNSW uses 50% ATAR and 50% GPA whereas WSU uses whichever of ATAR or GPA qualifies you (gotta confirm that second one to be sure) however I highly recommend you read the thread Mana has linked you above in regards to med science.

So I just read the part of the thread that applied to me quite well and it helped a great deal. So can
I just confirm that I can apply for UNSW medicine as a standard applicant using my 'New UCAT score' and ATAR?

With UNSW if you will have less than 6 units of uni studies completed by end of next year you can apply with ATAR & new UCAT. Otherwise you need to complete 1 full-time equiv year (8 units) with GPA 6.5+ to get 99.5 equiv for it, which then combines with your ATAR 99.8 to around 99.65 to use with new UCAT.

Do the interviews for UNSW get released in rounds, or just once. I received a 97.6 ATAR, which isn't very high, and I did not receive an interview. Do I have any chances?

Given what you’ve reported elsewhere about your results (no adjustments* and a low UCAT), no, you won’t come close to receiving a UNSW interview invite unfortunately.

ETA: *though anecdotally your story makes me wonder about EAS eligibility?

Hey LMG, I didn't know EAS helps for medical entry. Yes, I have been accepted for the EAS. It's pretty impressive that you determined I had it. Can you please give me guidance.

I do not have any other bonuses. No rural, no indigenous.

EAS may have helped boost your ATAR to 99+, however UCAT 79%ile is not sufficient to get an interview anywhere unfortunately, either by itself or in combination with 99+.

Answering your earlier question, since you are in NSW and all three NSW undergrad med schools accept non-standards there's no benefit in taking a gap year. You should start uni and apply non-standard next year, best of luck.

So I just called UNSW up and they basically told me the same thing. So there are three entry pathways

1. Graduate entry scheme, where they take in 10 people from the medsci cohort in their second year
2. Take a gap year and study again just for UCAT, then apply via UAC and complete with that year's graudates
3. Complete one year of whatever course (medsci recommended) and then use the GPA + ATAR + new UCAT to gain entry again competing with that year's graduates.

Considering this and my ATAR: 99.8, which do you recommend? I sort of want to avoid a gap year just studying for UCAT and personaly think option three might be the safest. What are ya'll thoughts?

Yes but no medsci pls

Option 1 not recommended because of medsci, option 2 is risky and unproductive if you haven't planned anything else for the year (working, life experience, travelling etc.).

(medsci recommended)
Recommended by the UNSW staff? No way! ;)

ETA: In your position there is very little to gain from a gap year: you can apply to all NSW unis as a non-standard applicant anyway AND once you have a completed degree you’ll be able to apply to USYD and UNDS as a graduate entry applicant too. (Ideally this will be done with a degree that provides you with an alternative career path should medicine not work out)

Hey guys,
I was just on the phone with a UNSW staff and they told me that EAS people are not in a separate pool for selection. The adjustment points are added and then judged like everybody else. I heard someone on this site say that EAS people are selected in their own little category- that is definitely not the case... hope this clears that up. Also, they said that the lowest ATAR for interview offers were 97.20 this year.

97.2 before adjustments were made right?

Great so you recommend option 1 with medsci then?

Great so you recommend option 1 with medsci then?
Also, with my current ATAR, would it be plausible that I gain entry given a significant improvement in UCAT + good grades?
