In general UNSW selects interviewees by the combo of their ATAR+UCAT i.e. a higher ATAR needs a lower UCAT to be equal to the opposite. Example in a previous year the "pivot point" was 99.20 + 92%ile, with 0.1 ATAR = 1%ile *very approximately*. Rule of thumb was 99.2+92% = 99.3+91% = 99.9+85% etc.

Last year the pivot seemed to escalate to 99.5 + 95%ile. A 99.95 would need ~90%ile to make the cutoff. UNSW also added a tragic rule that sub-99.5 got cut out regardless of their UCAT. This meant a 99.5 + 96%ile would get an invite but a 99.4 + 99%ile (mathematically a better combo) would not. Why I call it tragic.

That's for interview invites. Place offers are similarly based on the combo of ATAR+UCAT+Interview. A top ATAR or even a top ATAR+UCAT can still miss out an offer due to a subpar/poor interview.

Hey A1, thanks for your information. It was very comprehensive and easy to follow.

Just wondering, do you know any possible reason to explain why UNSW cut the number of interview invites last year that escalated the required selection rank, and would it possible increase again this year?

My ATAR is 99.95 and UCAT is 92 percentile. Comparing myself to last year's interview data, I should be 'safe' to at least get an interview. However, what are the chances they raise the selection rank by another 0.2?

I am also curious what happens if I am also entering as a University student? I know that they only assign a limited number of spots for this pathway... Does being rural overrides transferring from uni, if that makes sense? Only 218 rural applicants actually surprises me.

UNSW Med doesn't put uni-student applicants into a separate pool/quota so no limited number of spots.
Btw the 218 applicants for 150 interview spots was one particular year. Iirc last year it was more like 350 rural applicants.
 
Hi everyone,

On the UNSW website providing information about the Medicine program for local applicants it states:
"Late exam results
Applications cannot be considered if results or changes to results are made available after applicants have been selected for our last interview round in January (see important dates tab for more details)."

One of my exam results is late as I sat a replacement exam, and it will likely only come by the 9th of January which is after selection for the final UNSW interview round in January.

Does anyone know if my application can still be considered for an interview invite on the basis of my available results and qualifications, even if the final result for one subject remains incomplete?

It would be really unfortunate if my application can't be considered just because of one late exam result :(

Are you a first year student? Excluding the late unit, how much FTE will you have completed? If it’s less than 1 then it may negatively affect your selection rank for UNSW, unfortunately (A1 can likely chime in here to confirm?). If you’re over 1FTE and your GPA without that unit is competitive then it shouldn’t matter but the selection rank conversion for <1FTE isn’t particularly kind from memory.

Thank you for your response.

I've completed 0.5 FTE in one degree, then transferred and completed 0.75 FTE in the degree I am currently in (excluding the late unit). I believe UNSW needs you to complete 0.75 FTE in one program of study, so I would be considered a first year student in this case.

Thus, I've completed 0.75 FTE excluding the late unit. My WAM/GPA for my studies excluding the late unit is sufficient to satisfy the minimum requirement for interview selection: "your tertiary study component must reach WAM 70 or equivalent."

I am actually relying on my ATAR to provide a competitive selection rank for UNSW rather than my GPA/WAM, so I believe I should be okay even if UNSW disregards my tertiary results and assesses me based on my secondary results only. The UNSW website states that
"Once you have met the minimum requirement, a "best of" algorithm will apply and the qualification with a higher selection rank will be used as a final selection rank for Medicine program admissions purposes."
With regards to this, I am definitely expecting that my ATAR's selection rank will be higher than that of my tertiary results.

I'm mainly worried that my application will not be considered at all if UNSW decides they can't assess whether I have met the minimum requirements for interview selection due to my late exam result (particularly, the requirement that my tertiary study WAM must reach 70).

If it helps, I have contacted UNSW about the question of whether my application can still be considered despite the late exam result. I received this response:
"The website information is up to date and correct. We may be able to use another qualification to assess your application however this cannot be guaranteed."

I'm not entirely sure what to make of the response as it seems quite uncertain.

If your ATAR is the more competitive of your results, and you’ve done the minimum 0.75FTE in this second degree then I think your application will be considered, no problem at all.

Hello!

Best wishes to all kids who are anxiously awaiting for their UNSW interview today! 😊 I know how anxious I was feeling around this time last year, got an interview but didn't end up getting the final offer. I also applied again this year, but I am definitely not as desperate for any result or whatever, and am already very comfortable with my Comp Sci degree.

Reminder that there's still plenty of time to get into medicine even if you don't get an invite today. It might seem like the end of the world, but the world's yours if you persist!
 
Apparently UNSW notified me that I wasn't able to be ranked because UNSW couldn't get my academic results...that's weird...any other non-standards under this issue?
