UNSW UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

I have an ATAR of 99.3 and I wanted to apply for medicine next year as I haven’t gotten in this year. I am a NSW candidate. I was wondering if I could do an extra HSC subject to boost my ATAR so I get eligibility for UNSW interview?

You could do that.
Alternatively start uni and get *full-year* GPA 6.5+ you'll also qualify for UNSW.
(Examples 5 HDs + 3 Ds = 6.625 or 6 HDs + 2 Ds = 6.75)

Thanks that’s helpful. I am unsure about whether I should take UNSW med science or take a gap year. I understand pathway course may have been better but this is what I have right now. I’ve enrolled in 7 units in UNSW med science but I’m not sure if I have to do 8 as I’ve selected all the compulsory ones.

A1 replies: You will need to complete 8 units by end of year to have a chance at UNSW.
With 6-7 units even a max GPA 7 won't convert to 99.5+ ATAR Rank.

Does the rural entry scheme take mature age with GPA only? I don't have an ATAR but I have a masters degree with UNSW with a 6.8 GPA.

I was a rural mature aged applicant in 2017 with no ATAR. They converted my TER (the system Tas were using when I finished year 12) to an ATAR equivalent and even told me what it was. They’re pretty desperate to use ATAR 😂.

There might be a different process if you don’t have an ATAR because you didn’t finish year 12. You’d do best to contact them directly you if that’s the case.

I also finished year 12 in NSW when it was TER (unfortunately giving away my mature age here). But almost certain it would be below the cutoff if converted to ATAR. Hence hoping they would take my GPA. My Masters was with the Department of Medicine with UNSW, so maybe that might have some sway (hopefully).

I had a doctorate level degree with what, at the time, was Department of Med and Psych. They still used my TER. They seem pretty set on it. Generally speaking, they don’t have any need for making exceptions because it’s a slippery slope and they have thousands more applicants than they need every year even when people DO meet their cut-offs.

They have changed their processes since 2017 when I applied so would be worth asking, I guess. And your GPA will be good for JPM and JMP so you’ll be doing a UAC application regardless I assume? No harm adding UNSW.

I just found this on the UNSW Medicine Special Entry Scheme web page:

I have completed a degree
If you have completed any tertiary degree before the end of the year in which you apply (e.g. applying for T1/24 and completing a bachelor’s degree in December 2023), only the completed tertiary qualification(s) will be considered for admission.

  • Completed tertiary studies must reach a minimum WAM/GPA equivalent of a 91.00 ATAR without adjustment.
As you have completed a tertiary degree, we will no longer consider your secondary qualification.

No idea how to convert my WAM/GPA to ATAR, despite extensive Googling. My WAM is 89.

Yes I'll be doing a UAC application when they open. Ideally I'd like to get into UNSW at Port Mac as I live on the mid north coast and have two kids, so travelling further afield adds an additional level of logistical complexity.

This is a QUT one- I am sure there must be one for UNSW. Sorry I can’t find it- this one looks like your GPA / WAM would “ convert” to a 99.75, but not sure what UNSW scale is

You first need to calculate the GPA from your individual marks, not from WAM
(because for example a subject's WAM-boosting 95 marks has the same grade points as 85 marks).

Then use this table to convert to ATAR equivalent
[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] UNSW Medicine: General Entry Questions and Discussion

Notes:
1. We have good reasons to believe it's what UAC uses for NSW unis by default (i.e. unless a uni instructs UAC differently).
2. Although it shows GPA 6.5+ is capped at 99.50, we have seen a few cases where it appeared 6.7-6.8 was converted to higher than 99.50 for UNSW Med.

For the application for UNSW , in the application forms for medicine there's an option to put the campus preference.
would it be beneficial to put wagga wagga or port Macquarie 1st 2 options then Kensington as a 3rd option when applying rural or it does not matter and they don't look at it in the selection process

The campus preferences are separate to the actual course offers, so your chances of getting an offer will not change if you put port or Wagga higher. Campus preferences are only considered if you get an offer

Thank you so much.
and do you know if they count the rural as 5 consecutive years from the age of 5 or from starting kindergarten ?

From the age of 5

"To apply via the Rural Entry Scheme, applicants must have lived in a defined Australian rural area, MMM 2 - 7 for at least five consecutive or ten cumulative years between the ages of five (5) and eighteen (18)."

Hi I was wondering my son is on a gap year (graduated dec 2024) so he has his ATAR. Since he has the atar, on the UNSW site is says that they consider the students who have their ATAR score already in the first round. Would he qualify for that round ( given his ATAR and UCAT meet the cut off). Also from what I understand UNSW doesnt discriminate interstate vs local, is that true? We live in WA.

Before 2023 UNSW split the interviews into round-1 for NSW/ACT and round-2 for interstate.

They no longer do that. Now round-1 is for all applicants who have ATAR results by the invitation date.
Downside is invites are issued just 1-2 days before the interviews. Okay for local students but imagine you need to organise flights/accom from WA with just 1-2 days notice.

You're right UNSW doesn't discriminate interstate vs local in terms of marks. But the short notice is a form of discrimination

Hi guys, I've heard that applying via gateway would exclude you from being considered in the general application pool. So with an atar of around 99.7 and a ucat of 2350, would it be more advantageous to apply via gateway or enter the standard pool with EAS? Thanks for the help!
