UQ UQ Dentistry: Admissions General Discussion

Is there any word on what happens when things need to get going back to face to face?? I know the UQ Med Program told people they have to be face to face or dropout/defer/get the exit degree

as someone in the 2021 cohort there are about 35 in person and 35 online. So there are many internationals doing it online from all over the world.
Lmao i was hoping there werent any international students to make it easier. hahaha

I think those in second year who are going in to third year and overseas may need to defer or drop out...
which makes it harder for those in the years below presumably with a bigger cohort and them passing only so many people..

Yeah that was what I was hoping when I applied but tough, to make it worse, internationals have a lower academic requirement and don't need the UCAT...

Hi just a couple questions from an NSW student

1. "If you already have an ATAR or selection rank of 99.00 or above, adjustments won't boost your rank."
Does this mean that a 99 ATAR cant be adjusted to a 99.95?

2. Only 23 students made it just off ATAR and UCAT last year??? is dentistry harder than medicine to make it in???
+ does anyone know whats going with international students for 2022? will they make it too?

1. No. Adjustment factors will still apply.

2. Not exactly. Internationals can apply. Will they make it? Depends.

oh and also will there be an interview for UQ dentistry 2021?
I know for past years there wasnt but was wondering if it were subject to any change at all?

UQ Dent ranks on Selection Rank first (SR = raw or adjusted ATAR), then within the same SR ranks on UCAT.
Because there were more SR 99.95s than places 99.95 became the cutoff, not really a set threshold.

(I sincerely hope UQ will change back to the old intent i.e. all 99s are on same SR 99, then get selected on UCAT).
Does that mean if there are 20 spots and say 30 people having 99.95 SR. Will they rank those 30 people based on UCAT, and only the 20 highest UCAT scores will be invited?

As a non-school leaver applicant, I would like to know whether UQ takes the best of either your GPA or ATAR. Let’s say I apply at the end of this year (2 sems) with a 6.5 GPA and an adjusted ATAR last year of 99.95; would UQ then take the ‘best of’ either my ATAR or GPA and then select accordingly from UCAT?

Unfortunately they will your GPA

If your highest level of study is in higher education (such as at university), you can be assigned a selection rank based on:
  • your level of study (such as bachelor's or master's level)
  • the duration of your study
  • your grade point average (GPA).
Once you've completed 1 year of full-time study (or equivalent) at bachelor level or higher, your selection rank will be based on this study only – even if your rank from another qualification is higher

You could drop a course before census day and you will be <1 EFSTL, and they will use your GPA. What UCAT did you get this year?

If you decide to go this route it would be best to run this through the admissions staff at UQ just to make sure they will use your ATAR

In this old thread i quoted the website as
If applicants have the same OP or rank, QTAC uses their UCAT aggregate score from the first 4 sections as a secondary differentiator.
Now the website is updated to say
  • for entry into the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours), the aggregate score from all 5 sections of the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). Applicants with the same aggregate score are ranked by their UCAT ANZ section 5 score. If this score is also the same, the UCAT ANZ section 1 score is used

So yeah it does seem like a change

I scored 3090 on the UCAT this year with a 561 in SJT ( yikes! ). It seems that my score may be borderline this year when I take into consideration how the raw score marks are increasing every year. 90th percentile in 2019 was 2850 which jumped to 2920 for the same percentile last year. I’m currently on a GPA 7 from last semester but seeing as I’m doing 5 courses this semester (some of those courses I’m finding hard to be interested in), that may change by the end of this year.

This is old data but SJT's are typically alot lower so may not be a screwed as you think... as long as you keep up the 7 GPA then you should be able to clutch it. 5 courses seems like a hard workload, is there any reason why youre doing that.

If one person gets 99.95 unadjusted, compared to another person that gets a 99 atar (with 99.95 after adjustments), do they consider the 99.95 applicant over the 99 atar applicant?
Or do they just look at UCAT instead?

(cause UQ dent website says "applicants without adjustments will be considered before applicants with adjustments.")

Although UQ doesn't spell out clearly, the Raw over Adjusted clause appears last on the list which gives the impression it goes in that order

i.e. First differentiated by Selection rank, since not enough places to go to 99.90 only 99.95s (including adjusted) pass through
- then differentiated by sum of 5 UCAT sections, with section 5 as tiebreaker, then section 1 as secondary tiebreaker
- in the rare event they still tie at this stage, Raw over Adjusted.
