UTAS UTAS Medicine: Entry Information and Discussion

Hey LMG, I am a domestic student who has completed Year 12 overseas. By any chance would you know if I'm elligible(meaning will I be considered) for tomorrow's offer round?

Not usually. The first post-ATAR round is historically just locals.

But who knows.

I logged on to the website and saw this...looks like we’ll be waiting a couple more days

Thank you. I just saw it now. Do you think offers for all applicants would be released on 20th or only the Tasmanian applicants?

Hey LMG I'm a bit confused. So the 1st post atar round is around Dec 18th. Is the 2nd round (for interstaters) also historically been in Dec, or is it in January?
Thank you so much!

I don’t think anyone can tell at this point...we’ll just have to wait and see! Wishing you all the best ❤
Yeah. I called them today and they said offers will be given out TOMORROW for medicine! So it seems we can't really trust what they'll do! Anyways, good luck to you too!

As I’ve already said several times, historically (which is all we can go by), the Dec round of offers is locals only. Interstate non-rural offers tend to be early Jan.

The admissions person is correct in saying that offers start coming out today... historically (again) to locals.

But I'm a bit confused since in the 'Med offers 2019' thread for UTAS it says;
University of Tasmania - Medicine
Initial offers released on the evening of November 9th, 2018. Local school leaver offers released 19-21st December, 2018. Interstate school leaver offers released 21st December, 2018.

Perhaps these were just the RAP offers?

I said “historically”. UTAS are well known for using their own website as more of a suggestion than a rule. You really just have to have some patience.

Hopefully I can shine light in some way to help.

I was on the phone with the admissions yesterday and was asking about offer dates. I mentioned whether they will be following the same sort of timeline as previous years. The lady I spoke to said offers will be released on December 20th, because they were waiting for WA atars to be released.

From what she proposed, all states sound like they will receive offers at the same time on the 20th...

Not sure about non-standards or rural - there were only 1-2 cases I've seen on here that were emailed their conditional offers back in November.

I'm a gap year rural student from NSW for interests sake :)

Good to see you got an answer - and thanks for sharing. For info, WA ATAR's came out yesterday so you may hear soon. All the best for an offer from UTAS. :)

Just a heads up that the info provided by admissions doesn’t always pan out and there’s a chance someone could call now and get a different person and a completely different answer. I say this from extensive experience! I hope it’s accurate but don’t buy too heavily into it as gospel.

Good luck to those who are waiting.

From personal experience, this is true. Even in emails I have received completely different answers from different people. I still don't know the answer to some of my questions. It's just the UTAS way, it's not malicious its just answers seem to come from somewhere out in the cosmos. It's best to understand it as a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey stuff. Best to just enjoy your break and wait and see what happens.

You will know soon. Good luck.

Is UTas WSU's twin by any chance ;)

Let me add my own UTas experience to entertain. This was 4 years ago I read on MSO UTas had a UMAT S2=60 cutoff. I wrote to UTas Med to enquire who then passed it to Admissions. The reply was don't trust what you read on forums, sections are equal we consider the Overall score only.

Came offer day a student with both ATAR & UMAT less than mine got an offer, I didn't (obviously due to my S2=56). I wrote to UTas again saying what kind of advice was that! All they said then was sorry we advised you based on the info sheet from UTas Med, which apparently had not been updated for years.

I rang in 2016 (for 2017 entry) when they updated the website to (incorrectly) say non-standards were not eligible. The person I spoke to opened my application and literally told me I was getting an offer!

Narrator: This was not true. LMG did not get an offer for 2017 entry, in fact, she did not even come close!

For 2018 entry, I asked if non-standards were considered for rural entry via RAP and was told no, they were not. I had already submitted a form, but moved on to thinking I’d be in the general entry pool of non-standards.

Narrator: This was not true. LMG did get a rural offer in early December as a non-standard applicant!

🙄

Do you think they'll release offers for UTAS at midnight, or at close of business tomorrow,i.e. 5pm? I know it's only one day away but the wait is killing me!

These are so funny in hindsight (but sad at the time you didn't get the offers). It's like UTas is messing with the minds of MSO'ers. Wonder if you were mods at the time? But would you, A1, have really moved over to UTas?

Good possibility I would have. UTas had earlier offered me 20k/year scholarship + pre-arranged accommodation to come over do any UTas course. But then only offered the BMedRes with guaranteed entry to Med which would make it 8 years total, so I politely declined.

Was it the Chancellor's Scholarship? I didn't realise they offered medicine scholarships. Clearly you were highly valued by UTas. But it seems something must have gone wrong internally with the administration of your offer. To try and encourage you to study there with their initial offers and dollars and then to offer less than your first preference of medicine doesn't make sense, especially with your high academic scores. Shame you didn't appeal it at the time - but I guess you ended up with UWA's offer and I assume it was closer to home. But you nearly got to the same uni as LMG!
