UTAS UTAS Medicine: Entry Information and Discussion

I called Utas today regarding med offers and they said they call unsuccessful applicants to let them know that they have not received a offer. I have never heard of this, is this true?

They do make phone calls to say your not successful but I don’t know if they do this for everyone, at least to discuss applying for med res.

Yes, that's because BMedRes guaranteed entry is by "invitation only" and will be offered to a minority of people who are unsuccessful (making it feasible to contact them by phone). Also, there will be a substantial amount of people who end up with BMedRes guaranteed entry offers who didn't even know it was a thing, hence the need to contact these people personally.

I highly doubt it but have Tasmanian local applicants received their offers yet?
Hi

I’m pretty sure due to the mess up with the ATAR, the uni is still trying to compile results. So offers aren’t expected to be sent out until Friday. Only those who received the rural offers earlier were accepted if they reached the conditions.

I hope this helps, so if you haven’t heard from UTAS yet there is still hope.

Perfect, this is exactly the info we were after, thank you!

Yep that would be true but it wasn’t for a gaureenteed place due to non year 12 leaver I had already applied and offered a place
During phone call after stating I wasn’t competitive last year he started to discuss options to apply this year - med res - before realising I had already enrolled.

What do you mean by "I had already applied and offered a place"?

I wonder if they call a few people to try and drum up some business for a largely useless degree? Are you a Tassie local?

On the site it says "2019 Year 12 offers have commenced releasing to applicants. These offers will be released progressively until the close of business Friday 21st December 2018." Given that its like 8pm does that mean business is closed and I shouldn't expect an offer if I haven't gotten one?

Hi,

One of my friends hasn’t received an offer as of yet. However she rang UTAS and they told her that an offer was pending and she’d receive it in a few days. So it’s entirely possible the same thing may have occurred for you

The 19th-21st of December offers were for local applicants, yummo11. As an interstate applicant, your offer round isn't until early January. Lauren2000 is a local applicant, so I suspect her friend is too.

Unfortunately, you just have to wait a smidge longer, but your score combo is certainly competitive. What was your confirmed ATAR? I think your predicted was mid-99.xx wasn't it?

Lauren2000 can you keep us posted on your friend? The reason I ask that is I have personal experience of being told I have an "offer pending" and that I'd have it by "the end of the week" and it was an absolute lie and I didn't even come close to getting one (for 2017 entry), so I sincerely hope they've not left your friend hanging like they did me.

I got an ATAR of 99.35, and I'm only curious because my friends who are also interstate have already gotten offers for bonded entry in 2019

Were they rural applicants by any chance? If not, that's quite a big change in the UTAS process. Any chance they'd be happy to share their ATAR/UMAT combos? Even if anonymously through you?

ETA: this is from the UTAS key dates page:

"19 December. First round offers available to Year 12 Tasmanian applicants.
January. First round offers made progressively to Year 12 interstate applicants."

Nah, they weren't rural. As for ATAR/UMAT, I'm not sure if they're comfortable with me sharing it.

How do they compare to yours then? No specifics.

ETA: also you're clearly talking about multiple people, which is interesting because we've had zero offers reported here.

My mistake, it was only one person. Their ATAR was much higher than mine, 99.7+ territory, but their UMAT was also much lower ~90ish. Honestly I'm not quite sure how he got the offer though, perhaps they treated him as local for some reason?

Yeah, I don't know if you saw my edit above, but it definitely says interstate offers haven't gone out yet, so it's very weird this person has an offer already. Even in previous years, we've had no interstate, non-rural offers reported until Jan. Did your friend get their offer on the 19th? If so, then yeah, I wonder if they've somehow applied as a local. You don't know if they have family here do you? Though I doubt that would be enough... Hmm, a puzzle. A 90ish UMAT is also unheard of in the time I've been here for a non-rural interstater. So many things not really adding up!

He has a brother going there, so perhaps something happened in the process that I don't know about?

Either that or I was lied to :')

Haha, you know what, I just deleted the following from my previous reply because I didn't want to get you second guessing your mate but...

"A couple of years ago we had someone report an offer for their friend. Some of the details didn't really add up and when we pointed that out to the OP they went back to their buddy to clarify. Turns out the whole thing was a fabrication, likely driven by (misguided) shame about not getting an offer."

It's probably not the case, and there's no doubt some weird explanation, but yeah, it definitely happens, particularly in this highly competitive world.
