UTAS UTAS Medicine: Entry Information and Discussion

For me (159 UMAT and no offer), I am keeping a cautious hope for top up offers, and I think you all should too :)
Some people may reject their offer if they were offered another place elsewhere in first round (or later rounds, even).
Other people may reject their rural offer in favour of a non-rural offer from Tasmania in first round. I believe this happened in LMG's case (I asked about it on the UTas-specific forum thread) .

Chances are slim but we knew that when we applied for medical courses! Don't lose faith and just hope for the best :)

Oh really?? That’s great to hear! Where did you get this info from?

Well, UTAS said Rural Offers will be released progressively mainly throughout now and into the next month. And as seen in LMG's collated threads, rural offers tend to be released this way in the past.

Thanks for your reply
Any idea will the application hold any weightage?

No problem. I have no idea, but LMG suggested it possibly held some sort of weighing. Maybe ask UTAS directly?

Hi LMG
Will the written application for UTAS weighed more than UMAT like if the Umat is more than 150 but application not very good, chances of getting conditional offers will be low?
Thanks in advance

This is not confirmed, but multiple observations absolutely suggest that yes, the written application is weighted MUCH MORE heavily than UMAT. In fact, given last year’s scores, I go so far as to say, for rural applicants, UMAT is largely (if not completely) a hurdle, meaning 151 is no more beneficial than 181. Once your UMAT is 150+, it all appears to come down to the written application. This was emphasised for me by chatting with classmates and looking at offers here where people with UMATs in the 150s got offers (including CSPs) but people with much higher UMATs did not. The best way to explain this is that those with higher UMATs had much lower scoring written applications and their UMAT couldn’t ‘save’ them.

It will be interesting to see if this pattern continues this year.

I may have previously asked this but don't remember- does UTAS favour local Tasmanian applicants over interstate for rural? I doubt it but if so, could this be the reason why some have lower UMAT scores?

It doesn’t appear so for rural. In fact, I’d go so far as to say this is my theory (based on observations not direct info from admissions):

All rural applicants with UMAT 150+ are ranked on the basis of their written application. This includes locals and interstaters. X amount of rural places are set aside and offers are made on this basis by the RAP office in Burnie (I’ve previously had that last part confirmed, that rural offers are managed by the RAP office in Burnie, separate to other offers).

All remaining local applicants with confirmed ATAR 95.00+ are probably ranked on the basis of UMAT (as there’s no additional application for locals specifically). Offers are made in late December.

All non-rural applicants from interstate with S260+ are ranked on the basis of some combo of ATAR and UMAT and a very small number of offers are made to this group (comparatively) in Jan.

As it is stated applications will be considered on general merit first and rural offer second, but the timing of this is actually reversed, whereby rural offers come out first, you get a situation where people who get rural offers but then go on to be competitive in their respective general pools later on (whether that be local student, interstate student, or non-standard student) have their offers changed, probably (but not definitely) opening up spaces for more rural applicants.

That’s my interpretation! Could be all, partly, or not even a little bit correct, but it does mostly explain what we’ve been seeing the last few years.

Yes, but this year it appears that they came out much earlier.
Yes I am aware. But aren't the offers that were released a small portion of all rural offers to be made. If so, then should we expect more to be released soon- sometime this month - or not?
