UTAS UTAS Medicine: Entry Information and Discussion

For rural interstate school leavers, if they don't receive a conditional offer does that mean they won't be considered for first round interstate offers?
Would they then be considered the same as a non-rural interstate (i.e. the admisisons standard a lot higher?)
I haven't received a conditional offer (yet... I'll keep praying) and I'm just wondering whether that means the end of road for me in terms of Tas... :(

In the past, yes, that is what this has meant. January offers for interstate students have routinely gone to very, very high achieving non-rural students (ie: UMAT 98+, ATAR 99.80+ ish), while early round offers in the Dec or Nov prior were for rural applicants. There is a slightly revamped admissions process at UTAS for 2019 though, so I don’t want to dishearten you completely, plus there could be more rural offers to come in the coming days/Monday.

Do we know how many offers were released yesterday? And I thought UTAS usually release rural offers progressively or maybe its changed to one single round? I hope they continue to release some next week.

No, we don’t. We had four reported here, but MSO is typically a very small snapshot of the bigger picture so I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that many times that number of offers were made in total. As mentioned, they were over a couple of days last year, so there could be a few more first round offers to come.

ETA: in the past, it’s not so much that subsequent offers were made in multiple ‘rounds’ but more a reflection of additional top up offers made at various points. This will no doubt be the case again. These candidates have been told they need to confirm their offers by mid-Dec (which, incidentally, is much longer than we were given last year). This suggests there’s unlikely to be many more offers until at least after then, and, tbh, given no other universities will have started releasing offers by mid-Dec, I expect (almost) all offers to be accepted to start with. This would mean declined offers won’t really start to come through until after the UAC/VTAC/SATAC/QTAC/TISC main rounds in January.

ETA2: it’s also entirely possible (though, tbh, probably unlikely) that rural offers DID start this early last year, and continued for close to a month, but that none were reported here at MSO. I think the first offers were reported here on Dec 5th and I got mine on Dec 6th.

Would top up offers stay RAP places or would they go to the whole pool of candidates not necessarily eligible for RAP?

This is a hard one to answer because RAP offers get switched around a bit. For example, I initially got a RAP offer but was switched to a regular offer (likely due to my UMAT/GPA combo being competitive for both pathways). This would make me think my RAP spot was offered to someone else, but I don’t know for sure. The make-up of the cohort would make me think RAP offers were topped up as the class is vastly made up of rural students.

Concerned that, due to the excitement surrounding my offer last year, I might have been misremembering how offers actually rolled out, I've just gone back through the archive. About four rural offers were reported here on the 4th of December. A similar number were reported on the 6th (including mine). There were no more reported until the 21st, which was the advertised offer release date for local school leavers.

Obviously, the big difference is that we had none reported here this early last year, so it's hard to say how much we can draw from it, but yeah, that's what happened.

ETA: re. the most recent offer reported in the offers thread. It is a BMP. The fact that bonded offers have also gone out makes me more convinced that the bulk of initial rural offers are made in one go (possibly over a couple of days).

Would anyone know as to how many rural offers will be made by UTAS? I know that the UMAT cut off is 150.Yet do the offers depend on the written submission there on.? Though UNSW has a cut off mark of 150 and a written submission for rural applicants too, they apparently interview the first 150 who had scored above the 150 cut off mark

No, but it will be substantially more than the amount of places on offer as there will be many interstate rural applicants who decline UTAS when they get home-state or preferred state offers in Jan.

In the past it’s been 150/300 hurdle. ATAR 95+ hurdle. Deciding factor from there, 100% written application. Unsure whether that remains the case given other changes that come into play for 2019 entry.

We’ve already received confirmation that the 95+ ATAR remains a hurdle, so if there’s any change to rural school leaver entry (there may not be) it will be between UMAT and written application.

Hey guys, I talked to UTAS regarding their release of offers. They said "The early offers are going out slowly, so if you receive an early offer you will get it this week probably, if not, it doesn't mean you won't get an offer, you may still get one in January". I asked them how many offers they have released and they said they aren't aware of the exact number as each offer takes a while to process. And also, about the top up offers they told me "The offers in January are from the entire pool of candidates. So anyone that hasn't had a conditional offer already, and that have met the required entry requirements".

Still a bit unsure about it all, but hopefully some will come out soon!

Yes, this is very consistent with previous years.
1. Early, conditional offers to rural applicants in Nov/Dec (obviously a little earlier this year than last year, but still the same profile of people receiving offers).
2. Late Dec, after ATAR release, local offers sent out.
3. Early Jan, whole applicant pool offers released (which in reality means super high ATAR/UMAT combo applicants*) and BMedRes guaranteed entry invites released.
4. ATARs confirmed for conditional offers in Jan also usually.
5. Top up offers will then come through (particularly after QTAC, VTAC, UAC etc offers are released and people start to decline previously accepted UTAS offers) up until O week (and very, very occasionally beyond for one lucky person).

* that's what would be meant by "meets the criteria". Last year, the criteria was 99.80+ ATAR and 99th%ile UMAT at a minimum, reported here, I believe.

What do you mean by local offers? Are those offers only for Tas Applicants or interstate also?

Yes, for Tasmanian local applicants. Their offers are released in late December. I believe it was around the 20th or 21st last year.

ETA: just confirmed it will be the 19th this year: Application Dates

Wow, so essentially rural offers can come out anytime from now until the course commences (or even after).

Yes, but I feel like it's important to emphasise, if things are consistent with last year, there are very, very few offers (comparatively) made in January and beyond. For example, there were basically NONE reported here last year (which would mean very few offers were made in total). I think it's important to keep a realistic (but definitely hopeful) perspective.

These were the offers reported here last year:
98th %ile (61/73/64, 198), 7.00, non-standard, rural, CSP
97th %ile (53/73/66), 6.83, non-standard, CSP, offer received one week into first semester! (BMedRes student)
193, 95.00+, school leaver, rural
93rd %ile (56/62/66, 184), 7.00, non-standard, rural, CSP
93rd %ile (66/55/62, 183), 95.00+, school leaver, rural
90th %ile (55/58/66), 99.05, school leaver, rural, CSP
88th %ile (S2: 65), GPA unreported, non-standard, rural
78th %ile (59/55/53, 167), 96.25, school leaver, rural, CSP
99.95, school leaver, CSP (local Tassie school leaver - offer received late Dec)
70th %ile (47/55/61, 163), 98.00+, school leaver, rural
69th %ile (49/62/50), 6.00+, non-standard, rural
67th %ile, 6.5, non-standard, rural
155 (61/48/47), 98.05, school leaver, rural
50th %ile, 97.00+, school leaver, rural
52/58/41, 150, 98.80, school leaver, rural, BMP

ALL of these offers with the exception of the two where it's highlighted, were rural offers received early in Dec, 2017.

These were the people who received invites to study via the MBBS guaranteed entry pathway (ie. they did NOT receive direct MBBS offers, despite their very high scores):
99th %ile, 99.45, interstate, non rural
99th %ile, 99.35, interstate, non rural
99th %ile, 98.95, interstate, non rural
98th %ile, 99.05, interstate, non rural
97th %ile, 99.20, interstate, non rural
91st %ile, 98.65, interstate, non rural
88th %ile, 97.00+, interstate, non rural
86th %ile, 97.00, interstate, non rural
85th %ile, 99.10, interstate, non rural
95th %ile, 99.35, interstate, rural
88th %ile, 99.75, interstate, rural
83rd %ile, 99.80, interstate, non rural
79th %ile, 99.95, interstate, rural
70th %ile, 98.50, interstate, rural

Thanks LMG! I am definitely remaining realistic especially after seeing how some incredible scores are still not high enough for UTAS MBBS!

Hi LMG
Will the written application for UTAS weighed more than UMAT like if the Umat is more than 150 but application not very good, chances of getting conditional offers will be low?
Thanks in advance

Are you still hoping for an offer as well? I’m keeping my fingers crossed but losing hope by the day :(
