JPM WSU/CSU JPM: Questions and Discussion

Hey guys, hope everyone isn't stressing out too much with interview INVITES around the corner. I was just wondering, based on last year's data we saw that the threshold score for GWS for WSU was 691-693. I was just wondering, based on the shift in the percentile curve this year, does anyone have any thoughts on what the new threshold score might be? I'm assuming it wouldn't be raised a lot higher, but maybe around 10 points or so? Thanks.

In my opinion the best indicator so far will be what the invites to the rural cohort have been (although no one has been forthcoming with their results yet). It is also important however to remember when these stats do show up, that these may be skewed with a larger rural intake compared to last year due to the WSU and CSU joint program (they would not be skewed if there was a comparative increase in GWS intake but I would be doubtful of this as GWS is not a CSU concern). Another key factor to remember is that while the curve has gone up, the likelihood of an international cohort has gone down (the fact that my cohort has students stuck overseas who cannot return would make me believe the Uni won't bank on a large international cohort even though they need the $$).

This is something that is quite hard to estimate due to the weighting theve employed but since im procrastinating right now ill give it a go

In 2019 we were given the means and standard deviations for all subsets so applying this to the WSU formula would give as a nationwide wsu score average of 598.12 with a standard deviation of 81.276

The standard deviations of 2020 werent given to us this year, but you can estimate them using the fact that the ucat is normally distributed.
[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] WSU/CSU JPM: Questions and Discussion

Applying this to the WSU score formula gives us an average of 607.3 with a standard deviation of 80.94

Now we can use z scores to compare the two sets of data. Which gives us an approximate increase of about 8 for each category

[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] WSU/CSU JPM: Questions and Discussion

Now this approximation is very limited because
- From MSO data we see the performance in sections are often related to the others (e.g. iirc if people score high in DM they often score high in QR), so the average/sd wsu score isnt just the formula applied to all the section/sd averages
- The introduction of CSU will increase the amount of places available to rural applicants which will drop the rural score
- The increase in this years ucat is not equal in every section. VR/QR averages are pretty much the same, AR averages are similar, and DM averages has increase alot. Given the high weighting of VR for WSU, this means the increases this year are likely to be alot less.

Overall, I would expect the the scores to change 6-8 points this year if cohort distribution stays the same. I havent been paying attention to the way the JPM with CSU will change the cohort, but iirc its increased rural places and decreases general applicants. If this is the case, the rural score will likely be only a little higher than last years, and the general applicants score will be something like 10+

EDIT: The amount of international students will not increase the places avaliable for domestic students. Universities are limited on the amount of CSPs avaliable, so universities like WSU who dont offer FFP alongside their CSPs can not access the funding to increase student numbers.

^^ just for clarification I'm rural also, and the people I've spoken to who have gotten CSU INTERVIEW INVITES are rural

Does anyone know if interstate applicants are also receiving interview invites now? I’m a rural interstate applicant myself...

Just an FYI that the international cohort is irrelevant in this instance as they do not receive CSPs and BMPs and, as far as I’m aware, JPM is not permitted to offer FFPs to domestic students.

Also, interestingly, if you look at our international applicants thread, there are a number of people eagerly awaiting international student offers for both Med and Dent and another poster elsewhere mentioned hearing informally that unis were still receiving ample international student applications. Given the massive oversupply of applicants to places, there’d have to be a huge drop in applications before offer numbers were affected.

My statement was not so much on the basis that there would be little supply, but more the current international border situation that Australia is imposing, whereupon there are already students enrolled in Australian courses who are unable to cross the border. Which in a course such as WSU where attendance is required to pass, the feasibility of an international cohort living internationally is non existent unless they make serious exceptions and double standards, potentially undermining the course. It would have been my thought that they would fill the excess places with more CSP/bonded places, but from dotwingz's post this is unavailable, in which case I'd say you're right and some form of an international cohort will be undertaken.

Oh right! Yeah, I didn’t address that as I assumed it was a given you’d know (which was silly of me), but that’s absolutely not a possibility.

alright just thought i'd post this so no one freaks out like me... basically I called WSU because a number of people with lower UCATs and VR were getting CSU interview INVITES, and they (WSU) confirmed that because CSU interviews earlier they released their invites earlier if you preferenced CSU. WSU will be releasing interview INVITES sometime next week.

I'm a rural interstate student and I haven't received any emails yet. My UCAT was 3220, and I had a VR score of 820. Was there a way to preference CSU vs WSU, I thought they were listed as the same course?

you make a preference on UAC- when you put WSU/CSU medicine as a preference they ask you which one you prefer.

I think there was a post somewhere that interstate students will receive interview invites in decemeber for a january interview, so I think you should be good :)

Hey guys I received this email from Admissions regarding interview invitations:

“The invite for interviews for the Doctor of Medicine (joint program) are expected to go out later next week (Interviews Scheduled for November). In regards to the interviews scheduled for January for VIC, QLD, SA, WA and NZ Citizens, it is expected that invites will be advised late December - early January”

so it seems that interstate applicants scheduled for January will be sent invitations in late December early January.
can anyone confirm this?
Thanks !

So @LMG the lowest general entry WSU calculated score is a 690.4 - the 93%tile topup interview. Should I assume anything above that was offered a topup interview too last year?

That was last year's data. I believe this year's data is here: 2021 Entry Interview Invite DATA COLLECTION

"General: 725 (2020 entry for comparison: 726)
GWS: 710 (685)
Rural: 618.6 (633)"

I'm a bit curious why the cut-off for the general pathway dropped while the requirements for other two pathways increased?

LMG! I think the example that’s quoted for General is for a rural applicant

The topup offer - (second last one) under general applicants for WSU in 2020 is 690.4.
Or is that wrong?
The lowest general applicant score that received a topup invite was 726.4 for 2020 entry i believe
690.4 would be closer to the lowest GWS applicant that got an invite, but I can't remember the exact numbers

Well, according to the moderators, the cut off was for general applicants was 726. However, people are expecting cut-offs to change by a fair bit this year.

This is under general entry. I just copied and pasted. (Last year 2020)
VR: 640, DM: 720, QR: 740, AR: 800, Total: 2900, SJ: 706, %ile rank: 93 (top up)

(0.58*640)+(0.12*720)+(0.12*740)+(0.18*800) = 690.4.
Even with the increase of a 8.66 its still only a 699.06 for predicted 2021.

Anyways, theres no point speculating this, won't increase my chances of a topup offer. Thanks for entertaining i guess hahaha
