JPM WSU/CSU JPM: WSU General Discussion and Questions

Have most of the WSU equity scholarships closed for the year or have they not opened yet? I have applied via uac to the equity scholarships but the ones where I need a direct application to the uni I'm not so sure. Something like this scholarship: H & R Society Trust Scholarship | Western Sydney University
or others of the sort. Are applications closed for those considering entry in 2022 or are they not open yet?
I'm not sure medicine is included in any equity scholarships as far as I'm aware.

Hi Everyone,

Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong place.

I’ve been considering taking the path to study Medicine for some time now, I was considering WSU and would like some advice.

As a mature age student, what would be the best pathway for entry into Medicine at WSU?

I have been to university previously however never completed a degree.

I was looking at the general admissions requirements and can see that 1 semester or more but less than 1 year with a GPA of 6.1 for a GWS applicant can be enough.

I am currently enrolled in Bachelor of Science which I was planning on studying this semester but due to current lockdowns has been hard, if I defer this and study in semester 2 next year would this be the right move?

I understand I also need to also sit the UCAT which I plan on booking for once bookings open early next year.

This is a question you should ask yourself! Anyways with that being said, how many FTE worth of studies have you completed so far?

That is correct. You will need to sit UCAT ANZ.

I agree with this. I’m still trying to weigh up my options.

What I should've asked was provided I sit the UCAT and get a favourable result is 1 semester with a GPA above 6.1 enough to gain entry into WSU and would it matter how long ago this semester was?

Also does age play a factor in who gets offered a spot?

The last time I was at university was 2010 and I completed 3 units in first semester and 1 in second semester.

All pathways are the same at WSU... theres no highschool specific pathway, no mature aged student specific pathway, no non standard applicant specific pathway. The only reason applicants are treated differently is that if they are GWS or Rural. Age does not play a factor, youre as good as any in applying, in fact older applicants are typically more successful because they usually have a breadth of experience to talk about in the interview

What was your GPA in 2010? Undergrad schools dont usually have year limits on prior study, and 4 units = 1 semester EFSTL. GPA at WSU is a only hurdle and doest factor in final ranking, as long as you reach the minimum requirements you've done everything you can on the 'academic' side of the process

If you're able to and confident that you will be able to get a good GPA I would continue your studies, its way easier imo to be in a position where you can drop load later on. Especially because you may find difficulty jumping back into studies after 10 years, so having a lower GPA target (5.8 for 1 year of study vs 6.1 for 1 sem) will be helpful. Also, getting a good year of study in before you start the program might be best to get into the rhythm before you start medicine

Best of luck

If i put WSU as my preference on UAC does that mean that if i dont get accepted into WSU id still be considered for CSU?[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] WSU/CSU JPM: WSU General Discussion and Questions

Being 38 this year, this does give me a bit more confidence.

GPA was 5.5

From reading some of the information on these forums, what I understood regarding entry into WSU is UCAT is most important, followed by the interview then GPA, correct?

Yup. If you look in my signature you can see the collated admissions criteria and thats a really digestible way of processing entry requirements, its not updated for this year but WSU hasnt changed so its still fine. You will need a very good UCAT score to get an interview, with an especially good verbal reasoning score, from there its dominant on the interview (either 100% or 75% depending on what time of day it is). If you look at the interview subforum you can see the user submitted scores for those who got interviews (as well as our best guess on what the WSU weights the individual sections)

Thanks for this :)

No worries. just wanted to also say that either 100% or 75% depending on what time of day it is is a joke about how inconsistent communication from WSU is... it doesnt actually change depending on the time of day

For the combo schools these three components are equally (or roughly) important at each stage. For WSU one of them is most important at each stage - UCAT for interview selection, after the interview GPA is checked whether eligible for an offer, then interview score largely determines your offers ranking.

Regarding GPA, WSU counts your most recent study program provided it's one semester (4 units) or more. That means if you do 4 units this/next year it will displace the ones you did 10yrs ago. Btw if your ATAR was >93.5 for GWS you can use it to qualify regardless of GPA, I believe it doesn't matter how old your ATAR is.

Got ya :)

This makes sense.

I'm currently enrolled in 4 units, if I completed 2 units this semester and 2 units semester 1 next year would this be ok? Or do all units need to be in the same semester?

I got a UAI of 92.40 in 2002 which I believe converts to 93.00 ATAR so I missed the mark?

Thanks for all the replies so far :)

Yes you can spread it out. It's counted as one semester's worth = 4 units rather than one timeframe semester.

I would give WSU or UAC a call to confirm what UAI 92.4 converts to for 2002 (it can change from year to year). Maybe ask them for a little "leniency" to make it 93.5 ATAR ;)
(Btw if you call make sure you speak to WSU Med, not WSU General Admissions)

When applying to WSU, their website has nothing like "APPLY NOW" on the rural entry page (Unlike UNSW for example).
Is it just done through UAC, with the scanned upload of the form that they link to?
Thanks!

You just have to upload your rural form to UAC, there’s no external website 🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️

btw regarding the last part about wsu not using gpa if ur atar is greater than 93.5, i was wondering where you got that information from cause i havent seen this anywhere before. all i thought is that if u r a non school leaver and applying for wsu they look only at ur gpa which is a minimum of 6.4

GPA minimum depends on how many units you’ve completed and what type of degree (ie. bachelor vs honours vs masters vs grad dip etc). It’s not a flat 6.4. The ATAR/GPA clause used to be clear on their website. If it’s no longer stipulated, they may not still operate in this manner as these are the sorts of details that are definitely subject to change. Though it could also be that they just haven’t made it clear on the website, but it’s still in place.

If this affects anyone, I’d recommend contacting WSU Med admissions directly to clarify their current position.
