JPM WSU/CSU JPM: WSU General Discussion and Questions

from there its dominant on the interview (either 100% or 75% depending on what time of day it is).
This is a formal declaration on behalf of MSO that all members are to desist from taking more pot shots at WSU on the weighting % 🙃

WSU has now kindly indicated this on the website > General Applicants | MD Application

"The UCAT threshold for interview selection is not determined by your overall UCAT score; individual sections may be subject to weighting.
Final offers are made on the basis of: 75% interview performance, 25% UCAT performance and meeting the relevant academic threshold.
"

btw regarding the last part about wsu not using gpa if ur atar is greater than 93.5, i was wondering where you got that information from cause i havent seen this anywhere before
Wanted to check up on this too, so I used the chat box on WSU's page. Didn't manage to get a screenshot before I got abruptly taken to a "how satisfied are you with your enquiry?", but:

Taking all the provided academic results, WSU will use the most competitive one. For me they'll be given my ATAR and first year undergrad GPA, but it'll probably still be my ATAR they take

Is this^ confirmation that, although WSU no longer says so on the website, they ARE still using the highest of the two?

It doesn't really matter which one they use as long as it helps you meet the hurdle. WSU doesn't use it as a competitive measure to worry about which one helps you more.

Hi guys, since the introduction of Charles Sturt and I'm guessing more rural places for JPM, do you guys speculate that rural ucat cut-off could potentially decrease?

I've only seen UNSW release their stats as to how many rural applicants they get (if anyone knows others plz correct me). Over the last couple of years, the number of rural applicants has been increasing for the same amount of seats at UNSW, so if we were to extrapolate this to other universities, I'd say rural ucat cut-offs would potentially increase (basing this off the fact that these increased numbers of rural applicants would apply elsewhere too, not just UNSW).

The farmers are moving to medicine, it's the only reasonable explanation.

The only WSU bonus here is you're GWS. WSU allocates ~half of the interview spots to GWS applicants resulting in a lower UCAT cutoff.

We have also seen stats showing more than half WSU intakes are GWS, so it seems their lower UCAT doesn't affect their chances versus non-GWS applicants.
hi !! i'm sorry in advance if this is the wrong place to ask, I was just wondering whether the GWS bonus points for WSU are only applicable to those who have lived in the area for at least 5 years??

You can check in WSU websites to be sure but iirc yes, GWS requires not only 5yrs but must be the immediate 5yrs (unlike rural where the 5yrs could be 7yrs ago you're still rural).

What do you guys think the scaled UCAT cutoffs for WSU and CSU will raise to this year? Because my scaled score as a GWS apllicant was just above the threshold last year (mine was 706, cutoff last year was 700). But do they even increase the scaled cutoffs each year, and by how much, and is it in accordance to percentiles, cuz yikes, this year percentiles a bit crazy ngl.

No-one can accurately tell you how much exactly the scores will raise by especially since there are rumours that the formula could include SJT this year (I don't think it will but some are saying it will with semi-reputable sources) however if it rose in line with percentiles you would be VERY borderline. VR and AR have both risen in subtest percentiles which are the heaviest weighting.

If I was a gambling man I would say you won't get an interview offer. However, none of us really know what will happen this year Western Sydney applicants could have interviewed weaker as a group which would mean you likely would receive an offer or they could change the formula there is no certain way to tell and you are on the cusp with the current formula even with increases in percentiles so stay positive and hopefully you get an interview.

Edit - Just saw the first part of your question. They don't automatically increase it the cutoffs it is inline with how many interview places they offer for example if they have 400 places for interview and only 1000 people apply the cutoffs would likely be lower than if 4000 people applied. So yes in a way it increases with percentiles but it depends on the applicant cohort and how they individually preformed and it is likely to increase this year.

there are rumours that the formula could include SJT this year (I don't think it will but some are saying it will with semi-reputable sources)
Someone said that the WSU person mentioned using SJT in bands. In UK SJT is not given a score like here but divided into four bands 1 to 4. The UK schools that use SJT tend to disqualify band 4 applicants, which is around bottom 10% (score range typically 300-520)
See page 9 > https://www.ucat.ac.uk/media/1306/ukcat-2018-technical-report-summary.pdf

So *if* WSU will use bands similar to the UK SJT won't be included in the formula, just a threshold for eligibility like ATAR 95.5 (I hope).

Lowest we had reported here last year was 697*, it might have gone slightly lower as obviously not everyone posts their details on MSO. But 697 was a top up, so I’d say it’s pretty close to last years limit.
*using MSO’s unofficial formula.

I reckon some higher ups at WSU have a look at MSO and tweak their formula every year just to see the chaos and heartbreak it causes.

How do you guys know that WSU weighting is 0.58% VR.?
The weightings of each subtest can't be found anywhere on their actual website.

Maths. And A1.

ETA: and as we repeatedly disclaim, we don’t KNOW we have the weightings correct, but the formula A1 developed accounted for all interview invites and all interview rejections posted here last year.
