Admissions Centres Preferencing: General Discussion

Hello!
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but was seeking some guidance with QTAC preferences. I believe there is a total of 12 options for preferences (9 med and 3 dent)? I would like to study dentistry over medicine, however, do not want to pay FFP dent. Considering I got a 2940 UCAT and my ATAR will hopefully be mid-high 99, what would you recommend my 6 preferences be? Which courses am I most/least likely to get in (are there any I can automatically rule out?)

Also, in regards to Griffith dent, are there two options for FFP vs. CSP, and if so, how is it decided what offer you receive? And, what is meant by 'provisional' for Bachelor of Dental Health Science (to get into Master of Dentistry) in Griffith? Finally (sorry, last question), for JCU written application, considering I want dentistry, should I write with a focus slightly more on dentistry (or just 'healthcare') or focus just on medicine?

Really appreciate anyone's help and thanks!

Oh, I forgot to add, I am from South Australia, year 12 standard school leaver (non-rural)

Griffith Dent is 3yr CSP BDHSc + 2yr FFP Master, just one course structure like that no option to separate it out. With the 2 FF years the whole course is about $110k more than a 5yr CSP, which I think can be deferred to a FEE-HELP loan.

Pref order for you could be: UQ Dent > JCU Dent > GU Dent > UQ Med > JCU Med > GU Med GC/Nathan/USC (pick one)
Swap the three Meds around according to your actual preference, whether 7yr UQ or 6yr JCU/GU or location etc. Hope someone will help regarding the JCU written application.

LMG adds: the JCU written application question has been asked and answered a gazillion times in the JCU specific threads. I suggest you have a look there first and then, if you have further questions, ask them there where they’re on-topic.

Just confirming, there's no selection for unbonded vs bonded preference for UNSW through UAC or direct? I believe they're allocated randomly?

Definitely not allocated randomly. Say UNSW have 100 places on offer. At the end of interviews, candidates are ranked from 1 - 100 on the basis of their UCAT/ATAR/interview performance. The top ~72% get a CSP, the bottom ~28% get a BMP. If you aren’t interested in a BMP, then you rule yourself out of ~28.5% of places on offer. UNSW don’t give you the option to indicate this preference in UAC but they definitely don’t allocate randomly.

Sorry, I phrased it very badly (should have not mentioned randomly). But yes, I also saw on their website they base it on the ranking. Thank you for the clarification!

Just wondering, does USyd allocate BMP and CSP after you start your degree like Griffiths, because BMP and CSP are not mentioned in the offers forum?

Iirc USyd provisional students are "cream of the crop" so they all get CSP. USyd will allocate BMPs to the graduate-entry students (i.e. more than 28% of them get BMP).

Id be extremely interested about making the happen
defs would want to be involved in A1's idea in asking uac to call us before offers are released.
Yes, I think that would be a good idea if you guys could advertise it on MSO
Have a read of this post > Quick Questions 2021/2022

Our better tack now is to petition UNSW to hold all interviews in the late-January round, such that their offers will only come out in Feb. By then we'll know our WSU/JMP outcome and in a position to choose. Can you guys organise that?

Thank you for your reply. Is this the same with UWA, as it only mentions CSP in the offers forum?

No it's not the same with UWA. I guess there was no BMP offer reported.

Difference between these two schools is USyd offer ~30 provisional places out of ~220, they can make all 30 CSP. UWA offers 140 provi places out of 200, if UWA did the same the remaining 60 places for graduate entry would all be BMP.

I've heard from UNSW medfac that their current plans are actually to release offers in the early Feb round

Someone knows: NSW School leaver if can choose CQU Bundy and Rocky medicine program in QTAC? is it just for Rural applicant?

Preference lists are highly personal, Mana's list isn't comprehensive and is just his opinion (good advice for the most part, not diminishing it at all)... what made you interested in it in the first place to bring it up in your preference list?
CQU take UCAT (mine 98%, ATAR 99.4), not rural, initial thought UQ CSP/UQ Dental / CQU/USC/JCU/UQ Bonded, does this make sense? any suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Depends if you want to do Medicine or Dentistry more? Your preferences make me think Medicine (given 5 out of 6 are that), but you have UQ Dent second. If you'd rather do Dentistry than Medicine at any campus other than UQ (and even than bonded Med at UQ), then your preferences are fine. But if Medicine is your preference, then I'd move UQ Dent down the list.

There doesn't really seem to be any consistent priority here. It doesn't really make sense why you chose USC over JCU unless you wanted to stay in SEQ, but then you have put CQU as a higher priority so that invalidates that idea. Same with UQ Dent over any other med choice, but UQ bonded at the back? If your preferences are dominated by med, choosing UQ dent is a sign of prioritising Brisbane to me, which is then confusing because you have put UQ bonded at the back

Think about what matters most to you here, Mana's guide does a good job of telling what priority some factors take but ultimately its a personal decision

I suggest you hit the drawing board and brain storm what matters to you most, and come back to us with a list of priorities and we will help you out from there.

ETA: Also recall that CQU CSP means you will be spending 7 years at Uni in a regional area, not going back to Brisbane... compare this to a metro BMP which means you have a 3 year RoS in a regional area. Obviously as a student you have alot less responsibilities so making that move to that regional area is alot easier, but its just food for thought.

Hi! So I am really wanting to do med, however if I am not able to get in, dentistry will be my second option.
For QTAC, as all my preferences currently are med, if I get no first round offers for med, am I able to add UQ dentistry and then look to getting a second round offer? Or is there some sort of deadline for UQ dent that stops me from doing this?
I tried to look online but couldn't find any info :( Thanks for your help!

Hi.
I'm a non-standard applicant and so i have 3 med unis to input into uac: wsu, unsw and jmp. In terms of preferencing them, is the only thing that matters which one I prefer to go to i.e i put my 1st pref as the one I want to go to the most? Is there anything else I need to think about such as when interview offers are released for the schools?
Sorry if this has been asked before. I'm just a bit confused.

Preferences have no effect on interview invites. If you are eligible for any or all 3 interviews you'll get them no matter how you pref.

Normally yes it's like that. However in this case UAC is abnormal, in that they don't allow you to preference unbonded over bonded. Putting say UNSW 1st pref can mean you get UNSW Wagga bonded while potentially forfeiting WSU unbonded.

But now it looks like UNSW won't release place offers until February (aka round2). A good strategy is to put WSU or JMP 1st pref for round1, then move UNSW to 1st pref for round2. This way you can get two offers and choose unbonded over bonded if they are as such.
