Admissions Centres Preferencing: General Discussion

I asked my school about my predicted grades as our school does indeed have them. However, the lack of transparency istg, they don't even tell us the predicted. Does anyone have a legitimate idea why a school must keep such information confidential?

I vaguely hear the reason is they want to avoid having eggs on their face, in case they underpredict and your actual turns out much better, or vice versa.

Please call again to ask the same person there - does this mean UNSW will contact the applicants' schools to request predicted ATARs?
(Just want to test the water to see if the person had thought about it or just gave you a go-away answer) ;)

EtA: Oh also ask what if your school don't/can't give a predicted, would you then be invited to the interview round2? If yes that's a loophole you can exploit - ask your school to NOT give your predicted, you go into round2 interview/offer to avoid clashing with WSU/JMP.
Hi A1 I'm so sorry about the late reply, was busy & stressed submitting Medicine Application Portal last minute. Now that I've submitted all 3 (Kensington, Port, Wagga) as my campus preferences, I think I will just wait for the UNSW website to update on what they are going to do haha.

Once UNSW updates their website and announces they will use predicted ATAR, I think there will be a lot of discussion here about how to employ that strategy! Thanks so much always for the quick and timely reply, although I am not able to do the same A1

TBH, I would rather get my predicted than be sad if I got lower on my actual finals.
Schools are more worried about the opposite - they predict you a 95 and then you end up getting 99 - "wtf was that for man?". They'd rather avoid embarrassing themselves like that.

I think another reason might be to avoid conflicts where the student thinks their predicted ATAR is too low and argues for a higher predicted. The school would rather avoid that conversation altogether.

but why would predicted ATAR even matter?

For WA, normally Curtin is 1st preference or WAU? Sames as Flinder and Adelaide, how put their preference
Between Adelaide Flinders I believe most students prefer Adelaide because it's more established and easier to commute to being in the city.

UWA vs Curtin is a different comparison. UWA is more established but 6 years, Curtin is 5 years. When Curtin was opened 5 years ago its stated purpose was "With a strong emphasis on primary care, the mission of Curtin Medicine is to position graduates well for rural and remote practice, as well as outer metropolitan locations, where there is a shortage of doctors". As such there's a possibility Curtin graduates may be prioritised for internships at these locations.

Hello!

I believe this has been discussed before, but in case anything has changed with the UAC preference system and offer rounds due to COVID - what's the safest way of ordering UNSW, WSU and JMP? (with that being the order of my actual preferences)

I read that placing UNSW first and receiving a bonded place in the first round could mean I miss out on a WSU offer altogether.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, not only bonded but UAC can decide on your behalf that you prefer UNSW Wagga bonded over WSU unbonded.

Have a read from this post down > Admissions Centres Preferencing: General Discussion
(the ones that Purplefolly Ucat3300+ and myself discussed).

Basically we're waiting for UNSW to decide whether they will hold interviews after ATAR release 20th Jan thus release offers only in the Feb offer round. Then we can pref WSU/JMP for Jan and UNSW for Feb.

I am applying for wsu and jmp only this year (no unsw). Does it matter how i preference them? I prefer wsu so should i put that as no 1 and jmp as no. 2?

Hi guys,
I had some quick questions about preferencing for UAC.

My first question is about UNSW: so I've heard that UNSW is only doing one offer round this year, and this means that you can only receive an offer if you place UNSW as your first preference. I just wanted to see if that's actually true because that just seems quite unfair to many people who may want to go to UNSW but not necessarily put it as their 1st choice.

My second question is about deciding whether to put UNSW of WSU as 1st preference. So if someone does put UNSW as their first preference and they are successful in getting an offer, but they don't get an offer at their preferred location (e.g. Port Macquarie instead of Kensington), then does it have an impact on their likelihood of making it into WSU. And if it does, then isn't it smarter to just put WSU as your first preference because making UNSW is so difficult anyway?

It's complicated to answer your questions since you mentioned several scenarios together. I'll try to make it succint.

In each offer round you only receive one offer, which is *the highest of your qualified prefs* not necessary to be the 1st pref. So if you qualify for 1st+2nd prefs you get the 1st, qualify for 2nd+3rd prefs you get the 2nd. And you don't hear/know about the other one.

Thus if you get UNSW Port Macq (bonded to boot) you'll be left wondering whether you *would have* got WSU unbonded if you had WSU higher.

However we hear rumours this year UNSW will release offers only in the Feb offer round. So you can pref WSU higher for the January round, then UNSW higher for the Feb round. This way you can receive two offers then "manually" choose.

Bit of a different question here for you A1.

For non-standards who receive their results prior to December do you think they may potentially get an offer BEFORE the first round e.g. they receive an offer on January 13th because JMP/WSU have finalised their list after interviews and person A ranks <150th position at JMP hence receiving a JMP offer on jan 13?

January has multiple offer rounds but UAC coordinates with the med schools to use only one of them for medicine. This year 26th Jan has been chosen to wait for ATAR release.

On surface a non-standard who ranks <150th can be given an offer on 13th, but UAC won't do that due to complications with prefs & campus locations. Example you rank 141st - if none of the 1st to 140th gets their higher-pref WSU you remain 141st and get UNE bonded. But if 90 of the 1st to 140th get their higher-pref WSU (or fail JMP's ATAR hurdle) you are effectively raised to 51st and get UoN unbonded. They need ATAR results to know where you effectively rank.

Do you think potentially start date could be pushed back, I’m just thinking 3 weeks to completely uplift your life from Western Australia and move over east can be pretty rough, however I can do it if it comes to it

In a normal year interstate applicants to UNSW JMP Monash UWA Curtin only get their offers 5ish February, then semester starts 2-3 weeks later. Uplifting your life moving over is the easy part, finding accom at that late stage is the worry.

Btw if you're from WA isn't it the case you'll be JMP interviewed late January and you won't receive offer on 26th let alone 13th Jan?

I’m rural and non standard :) I’m lucky in the sense I own my own place over here so I can move out pretty easy but I’ll have to sell the majority of furniture ect I own and get a place via flatmates all in 2-3 weeks

There's a little trick people used in previous years - 2-3 days before the offer date 26th try log into UoN students system. Current UoN students use their student ID numbers, non-students use their UAC numbers (something like that). If you're destined to receive an offer on 26th you'll see it there.

That would give you couple extra days to sell your furniture 😊
