I've only got 08 & 09 and I'm guessing you have both of those? Pretty sure you'll find some 2nd years with everything back to like 01

OLY1 to MbChB- What did you get?

Hey everyone,

Just wondering what all you Auckland MBChB-ers got for your OLY1 results (in terms of core GPA and UMAT)
Really anxious as I'm doing OLY1 this year

Cheers :)

A core GPA of 8.25 - 8.75 is what most med students got in OLY1 (according to plenty of anecdotes). 3A+'s and an A- gives you an 8.5, and considering that they raised the grade cutoffs, Id say you are in a perfect position GPA wise

Hey g.walker

Just wondering, but was 8.25 very common though? I dont think I can do any better than that for core atm :(

Bad idea if you want Australia and probs NZL. There were shortages/demand for med graduates before but given how much MBBS spots have risen, I doubt that scenario will be present in the future. Transferring back into the Australia/NZL system is gunna be megahard as the med student tsunami hits and the bottleneck moves up the ladder.

I was actually worried about that, thanks for confirming

Wasting 2 years? Why would you be wasting two years? Wont you be learning in that time? All that knowledge you pick up will definately help you when you enter medicine. Heck I'm doing biomed 3rd year and I'm doing half the stuff the med kids are....
Also you can apply to aus in 2nd year as a non-standard so you can technically only waste one year..
Also from what I know getting into Indian med schools as an NRI is all about connections and how much cash you can shove in their faces..so unless you have good contacts and about 60-80,000 thousand then consider NZ and Aus..

Perhaps I wasn't explicit enough :S
My parents think it'll be a waste of time. I actually quite like the idea of finishing my degree and heading into med, I'm just having a lot of trouble convincing them that it's the right path. They should come around eventually.
However, while I enjoy health science I'd prefer to go straight into medicine and finish...

You seem to be counting yourself out early in the game. Self confidence can gave a big impact on how well you do. I would say be aware of your other options as the year goes on, but dont start planning anything until you get a better idea of how this year is going to go.

Reading over my posts, yeah it does sound quite like it but I assure you its not...just a case of a post getting lost in translation over the internet. I'm extremely driven and i'm still working as hard as I possibly can. My parents just suggested studying in India...getting in isn't an issue but I think godoftoast is correct in saying that I'd be better off apply for NZ or AUS schools to avoid issues.

New Zealander's basically qualify for no subsidies in Australia. Being a Kiwi living in Aussie now you'll need to have the funds for food, accommodation, transport etc. it's pretty hefty so yeah staying in NZ has serious advantages financially.

I'd say that 8.5 would be a safe score but don't get down if 8.25 is your best bet.
Honestly, and this is aimed to everyone, I think it's just best that you don't think about interviews right now. Do your best and everything else will work its way out. I've stopped thinking about interviews and I must say its much easier for me to remain sane, driven and hopeful (which helps A LOT).
At the end of the day if you dont end up with the grades for an interview, you'd probably find medicine too challenging.

But its probably true?

I think you'd have to search hard to find a doctor who'd say that a GPA below 7.5 rules you incompetant to study medicine! The cutoff is driven by the intense competition for spaces, not by the expected standard of a medical student.

Nah I don't believe they'll be incompetent, but they definetly would find it throughly challenging... I'm sure even med loses its sparkle when struggling to keep up academically. And once the passion is gone...well whats the point?

I'm pretty sure we all find it thoroughly challenging! I'm yet to talk to someone who doesn't...

ah Srao92, must be nice feeling knowing you're going to get a GPA over 8.5 and being 'safe' lol. Well thanks for everyone's input anyway, looks like its postgrad entry for me at this point. Still, better get back to biosci101 and poplhlth study :s

Good on the whole but I found the MCQ for muscle harder then previous years.

And yeah I'm a bit annoyed about the nernest equation question too...I spent more time on it then I should have because I kept thinking I was doing something wrong before they told us there was an error in the exam script!
