Hi guys
I just finished my biomed exams today for sem1!!!!
and i was just wondering at if the 4 non core subjects are taken into account at all, assuming i did get over B+ in all of them.
I tried researching it and some say it matters while the others (most of them) say it doesn't as it lacks fairness towards healthscience subjects being easier/harder.

Does anyone have any idea?

thanks:lol:

Your overall gpa is only looked at once to ensure it is higher than a 6. Then it is never looked at again and EVERYTHING is based off your core

Yes they count for the first step of enterance...You need a B+ average in ALL your courses. From then on its just the core papers. Looking on the NZ thread for undergraduate medicine in the undergrad section of this site will give you a lot more information and will answer most of your questions.

I'm doing health science this year and I have to say, its not any easier or harder compared to your courses. Atleast you have the advantage of having subjects where you can just memorize things and spew it onto paper. For us its that plus we have to understand and correlate ideas in an essay type format, where it is terribly easy to waffle on. They're both very different degrees with very different assement styles to adapt to but honestly I think regardless of which pathway you took you'd probably end up in the same area.
The only down side to doing biomed though is having to do a lot more labs and spend a lot more time at uni :S

Hope your biosci 101 exam went well and enjoy your holidays and sleep ins

Ahh right fair enough. Yeah 90 should be sweet =) 89 just scraped me interviews with uws & unsw last year. I have some stuff that I haven't even looked at but mayyy be useful (?). I can flick it through to you if you wana pm me sometime

Lol 89 scraped you an interview but 90 is fine?
Strange that 1 percentile really makes the difference.

You're right, that probably is a big call. But if cut-offs stay as they were last year, then 90 would be fine. But who knows what will happen I suppose

were you all set to go off to aus if you didnt make it into med in auckland?
I was hoping to apply as a non-standard but I'm a bit worried about the difficulties of moving to another country etc...

1% of even 2000 people is roughly 20 people. Considering there are only a few hundred interview spots and way more than 2000 people sit the exam (I'd hazard a guess at atleast 10-15 thousand people) each year I fail to see how its so inconceivable

Perhaps I was being a little niave in my comments :P
Its probably because AUS uni's weight UMAT more than the Uni of Auckland?

Not really. If I didn't get in, then I would definitely have gone to the aus interviews, then weighed it all up if I got offers etc. My plan b/c was actually to transfer to sport and exercise science, and reapply post-grad.

What were you planing on doing with regards to fee's etc?
Its a lot upfront and with no student loan :S

Yeah I hadn't really thought about that as like I said, I would've weighed all that sort of stuff up if the situation ever arose. Possibly parents, or sell myself on the streets in aussie...who knows =)

But you're right, it's a lot of money considering we don't get a student loan. Possibly a barrier that is not possible to overcome

Probably the only reason i'm sticking it out in NZ, doing UMAT and GAMSAT and applying via grad pathway everywhere!

Is possible to work part-time as a medical student? I'm pretty sure mummy and daddy can't pay for my fees as well as my accomodation etc.

We are, but we can't get student loans from your government or ours...so we'd have to pay everything up front...fees accommodation etc. Considering the exchange rate at the moment...it's a lot. Sure it's comparable to studying in a different city in the same country, but not getting a loan makes the world of difference.

So you have to pay 50K upfront for the whole CSP med degree? Geez. That sucks.

Your profile says you're OLY1...are you sure your exams went that badly? At this stage I'd still be focused purely on doing as best I could semester 2...but I suppose if you're sure all hope is lost...

Possible to work part time? Yes. But it's not something I could ever manage. I do the odd bit of tutoring but other than that I struggle to keep up with the workload as it is!!

short answer...yes!
Well actually it was my mid term 111 and 107 that were shockers.... reminder to any newbie reading this site: DO NOT STUDY FOR 111 JUST BY DOING PEERWISE!!!

Oh peerwise, biggest procrastination tool ever. It tricks you into thinking you're studying...evil! Well I hope your exams went a little better than the tests then =)

Definetly.
Chem and Bio were right on par. Bio had a few MCQ shockers but hopefully my process of elimination was okay.

111 was somewhat alright..a few scary 6+ point questions left me reeling but hopefully they get what i'm talking about.
While I have some doubts about my enterance chances...I'm still holding out hope.

What about you? How were your exams...I'm not to familiar with the assesments for medicine (apart from what i've read on the website)

That's good sounds like a nice recovery! Hope is a great thing *insert Shawshank Redemption quote here*. Rumour mill has it 107 muscle guy decided to give you guys a nice question this year?

I still got 2 more...lets just say I can't wait to have them over and done with because this has been a nice and stressful semester! We're pretty much assessed the same way you guys are...4 papers each semester with their own tests and exams. And some practical exams ('rat races'). Some full year papers too though so I think we have less exams next semester.
